To be honest, now that you mention it, it just hit me that what Sir Ridley meant by going further away from Alien might just be some subliminal message of sorts. I've been thinking that for a while Prometheus would serve as a "reboot" of the Alien franchise....or if not a reboot, perhaps a reimagining? For a while I've thought that "James Cameron set the standard by which an Alien movie is defined," but for all we know it was his Aliens movie that spawned the franchise as we know it to be, because it was his creativity that made Alien the versatile franchise that it has been for decades.....in otherwords, a reboot of the franchise may not be a good idea. Whatever risk is taken related to the canon, it's better off that they make another branch in the universe.....therefore, Sir Ridley's sequel (if there is a sequel) will be the "Ridley Scott branch", whereas from Aliens onward it could be the "James Cameron branch"....which sounds weird since he only directed Aliens and not the others, but I can't think of another name for it.
So I guess what I'm saying, absurd as it sounds, is that just because the sequel will tangalize further away from Alien doesn't mean we won't see the xenomorph, because we definitely saw it here (as did I, just moments ago).

This isn't a popular theory, but I think that it might be the Queen. My reasoning for this is because the Queen in Aliens was introduced by showing a head, then showing a smaller head grow out of it. If it is in fact the Queen, and we're ignoring the size of the chestburster-queen from Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, then I'd say that it ties into the original Alien quite well, although it doesn't explain how the queen would get to LV-426.
The other (more popular) idea is that this is a completely separate organism, which if that's the case, they NEED to explain in another film. You can't say "this is how we're tying this film into Alien" when there's a distinct difference in the anatomy of the alien.
Regardless of the answer, this creature has to be in the next film. Scott saying that a sequel would "move even farther away from Alien" worries me that this won't be the case.

This creature does not look like a Xeno, not the traditional one...
But it has simularities that we can connect with the Xeno, just as the Grown Squid Baby and a Face Hugger....
The reason........
Well purely so that the movie is left open, you see i am not sure Ridley is 100% made up where he wants to go with the Alien link... thats why there are a few clues that conflict and this is done on purpose..
This creature could be the Proto Xeno.... which then rules out the Xeno being created thousands years ago, it would also mean that the Organisms that killed off most of the Engineers 2000 years ago inc the holes in their chests and holes in their sarcophagus....
But then this creature could be a new creature created by a simular process to the Xeno... thus the Xeno is what killed those Engineers off.
This means its open as to if this creature is 1) Something new, 2) Something that eventually leads to the traditional Xeno.
And for that i applaud Ridley Scott.
