Any thoughts as why the engineers all look the same and that there are no female

Isn't that one of the questions this film explicitly asks? I mean, the Engineers created us, and we created David........Shaw asks: who created the Engineers? Are we all androids?

If the "goo" from the urns is the engineers way to create, control, further and destroy life then there isn't really a need for females or reproduction in general. Not to mention, typically female creatures look really.. pathetic and 'stereotypical' so having a 'male' creature, if they even have a defined gender, makes them a bit scarier I suppose? If that even makes sense, it's far too late to try to be typing intellectual comments...

They are all males because thats a recurring theme throughout every creature in all aliens. There are no female aliens at all: the cobraliens are male, the squid monster is male, and the facehugger is male. You may think the alien queen is female, but really she isn't. She just lays eggs, she is the only one that contributes genetic material to the eggs so thats asexual reproduction.
In the alien universe, WE are the females. Both men and women. So are dogs, as seen in alien 3... whatever it is that the species impregnates, it becomes the creature's female.
Having said that, the engineers are supposed to be very close genetically to humans, and we are obviously not only males. Perhaps the females are hidden. Or maybe they don't need females now that they've mastered genetic engineering and can create life scientifically (which would obviously be one of the the alien series' many comments on gender).
Also, because they're genetic engineers, I'm guessing thats why they all look the same - that is the perfect state of their species and eugenics has been in play, thats my guess.

@db73
I didn't mean it literally....another way to put it, is just how far the chain of creation goes.
But the OP's question was discussed at some length months ago. We talked about how it would make sense for them to be asexual since they're so advanced........but their appearance is decidely masculine. It could simply be a matter of Engineer aesthetics. They don't seem to have much of a soft side, and also appear to have significantly altered their own physical appearance since seeding life on Earth. Big and strong without the handicap of carrying around young would fit with their apparent generally hostile attitude as well.

maybe it's because on LV233 only military engineers are installed, and perhaps only males are military associated in their society?

They seem asexual to me.
Because both the Sacrificial Engineer (waterfall) and the Last Engineer have the same face, I think they may be clones as whatisthematrix mentioned above.
But, they're not all the same. The decapitated head had a very different face. It looked much older than the two individuals played by Daniel.
Clearly they are very muscular/strong. That's not necessarily male vs. female outside of a human/mammal context.

The decapitated head appeared to have a different face because it was sneering and pulling faces in pain... I saw it still as the same face, only showing expression. Still has the weird broken nose look.

I thought the engineers were extremely well executed and convincing.......really difficult concept to pull off practically, without looking totally cheesy, and they nailed it, IMO. They were simultaneously beautiful, human, and disturbingly alien.

They are clones and drones. like worker bees, they don't get to reproduce. Perhaps they serve a higher caste of creature, to be revealed in the sequel. And this caste simply makes more of them as needed, and disposes of them as needed.
A hint at this is the original artwork, showing something different looking, in a long robe HANDING the elixir to the sacrifice engineer in the first scene.

They remind me on the "Jem'Hadar" of Star Treck Deep Space 9.
Created to be soldiers and to do what has been told to them.
The Jem'Hadar were "designed" to follow explicitly the agenda of their makers (dominion shapeshifters in star treck).
All the engineers look same more or less, and they wear some kind of uniform.
They all well trained (sport, muscles) so they mosly seem to have a "job" to do.
But not for themselves, they serve somebody else yet unknown and the get their orders.

I think the simple answer is...maybe they don't allow women to serve in their military. This was some type of scientific or military outpost right. We will probably see some female engineers in the sequel if Shaw makes it to their home world.
June 09, 2012
Well, it's a military base right? Males are traditionally the Soldiers in most societies. Just a thought.
Edit: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I just said exactly what ゆたに (his name appears as numbers because I copy pasted it in O_O) said. And he posted right before me.. can I use the "It's 3 a.m and I am tired and didn't see his post" excuse??
I did say this same thing on a different thread too though. :P

If there are female engineers back on their homeworld-- strange they wouldn't have been like-- "Hmmm, Why hasnt John come home from that expedition for 2000 years now" :)
For that matter--seriously- did the whole experiment/expedition get abandoned by the rest of the Engineer race? Guess we have to wait for Shaw to go find out in a few years.
Ridley is gonna need a cryo bed of his own to be around for the sequel. All hail Sir Scott:)))

well, not so much in an advanced society, like the sj... we humans have integrated women in at least most of our military forces and we haven't even gotten to interstellar genocide yet.

They're like Spartans the women stay home even though they're as strong or stronger than the men.

no fellahs it s in the Bible... very prolyptic God creates men, then makes a female out of them then it all goes tits up...
Thanks Shaw now you made it with your little brand new sibling..
( Btw must say the ending was predictable as I was waiting for a queen like one to spawn the eggs John Hurt woke up.. whether on the same planet rename or the local one )
Question though: the Xenomorph soldiers skin strangely look the engineers suits which might coorborates the theory that engineers are synthetic or that the goo affects any lifeform and embryos are mutation/fusion of their hosts and have all their characteritics plus anger biting management issues ... what do you think?
