I have noticed a strong trend with Americans liking and enjoying this film and Europeans/Kiwis/Aussies not enjoying it. My hypothesis is that 90% of those who liked it are American. This is due to cultural reasons that I won't get into on this board.
Brit here. Did not enjoy.

I think Americans realize that if you are on a fan site, and care about sci-fi, then not being satisfied with the best example in years means your personal rating systems are out of whack. If you Don't like this movie, tell me some sci-fi movies you do like in the last 20 years. If you don't like anything then why bother reviewing at all? All i got from most of the UK reviews was negative nancy with no idea of how it could have been better offered up.

I personally loved the film and thought it was a great starting point because we know more is to come. The film had a lot that was condensed and there is like 30 minutes missing, which we might see in the DVD hopefully.
I'm from the United States.
I think the reason people are not liking it, it because it did not fit "their" ideas and "their" story, pretty much what they wanted.
I loved the film and I know there is more to come...this was just the tip of the iceberg to me, we will now get to see what lies under neath.

@sambo lol, i thought i t was pretty obvious from what i said. yes. If you want to get into why Americans liked it, let's talk about it. Mostly because Ridley Scott isn't American.

Mr. J I have to agree, most people didn't like the film because it didn't do what they wanted it to do. To me that dosn't make sense, I'd rather just watch a film instead of wishing it would do this or that.
More people will like it in America because there are more people in America. Say half the UK liked it, well a better comparison would be to compare the UK to a large state or two medium sized ones.

I like Prometheus because I didn't see a xeno , a queen or the typical Alien story line, it was nice to see something fresh and really, the Space Jockey's history now and in passing, we know why they created the Alien, for what purpose, was the Alien their demise? Did they wipe themselves out and all that is left ruin and a dark giger landscape world filled with horror waiting for Shaw and David, now that is what I want to see...

Ha ha, how ironic.
went opening night. 12 friends. 10 Brits. 1 American and 1 Swedish.
All disappointed bar one person.... yep you guessed it.
Even the Swede was disappointed, and she's a big fan of Noomi.
Funny how you've come to this conclusion.
But i think there will be a split. I have spoken to a couple friends across the pond, and they too, found it lacking.
I'd like to think, the Americans have a different cut of the film, one that makes sense.

Are there a bunch of rad movies in Europe that don't make it to the states? What movies are you comparing this to over there?

It's not a terrible movie but if you really thought it was a milestone great movie, in my opinion you're delusional.
Fact: Prometheus is very choppy and follows the modern trend of visuals over substance. All movies, not just Premetheus follow this trend. It is the the down side of CGI - it takes precedent over story in modern movies. As a stand alone movie Prometheus is lazy as are most movies these days.
Fact: The writing and dialogue are nonexistent. I don't think there is a significantly acted scene or developed conversation in the entire movie. The only one that comes close happens between David and Holloway at a pool table, is short, and does nothing other than convince the audience that Holloway is a complete imbecile and poorly written character. The rest of the movie really is nothing but jumbled short 1 liners. Seriously, take a hard look, there is little to no character interaction.
This is a talented cast, that it utilized for no reason other than name dropping to sell tickets. I bet Elba has less than 50 words in the who movie. Rapace, is completely unutilized. How does a director do that with her? She is fantastic. The answer is simple - the writing is crap. It's not really a surprise. I really have never though Lindorph was that talented - he has good ideas and concepts but can't figure out how to resolve anything. This whole "the viewer resolves it how they wish" crap is lazy and bogus. Lost was a great series whose last couple of seasons were complete crap.

I agree with ArchEtech on this one. I think the visuals took precedence over a rough and choppy storyline line that needed more time to develop. I didn't want the movie to fit in the guidelines that I expected, I wanted it to make sense.

I'm American, and I actually prefer many foreign films, particularly those with joint American and foreign producers and production cast.
Prometheus's writing and story development is as bad as the Twighlight series. yes I said it.
Better Sci-Fi movies than Pormetheus as a whole:
District 9 was considerably better. Here is a good example of story, character, and visuals. It wasnt groundbreaking conceptually, but it was a complete movie. This is a great movie.
Avatar by James Cameron. Dances with wolves in space. Not a ground breaking movie in terms of concept, but a complete movie. It has groundbreaking visuals the best 3d utilization to date, and allows time for the audience to get to know the character and actually care about them. Weaver is fantastic. It has clearly thought out acts. Not its not perfect, but I didnt, leave the theater with 25 underdeveloped ideas, and 50 things I would have done differently while walking out of the building.
James Cameron is like Apple. He doesn't create a new idea, but he takes an existng idea and makes it work better than anyone has.
Star Trek reboot: good story, great visuals, god acting, good fan base tribute. Doesn't try to be anything more than it is.
Pandorum: A bit jumbled, but it's more interesting than Prometheus, and considerably more suspenseful. It did have a bit more holes which is why it's at the bottom of my list - it could have been great. Good ending.
Its not that Prometheus is that bad, it's that it could have been so much better, and that's irritating. Im sure that my expectations ruined it to a degree, Imcan admit that. I have no interst in even buying the DVD. I'm already looking at what other movies are coming out this summer.

UK...
Very disappointed at first.
Now I like it.
I noticed most of our American friends must have different tastes or something too.
They just dont seem to see the same problems most of us from other parts of the world see with the movie. I have no idea why I think that though, so dont ask me :)

Excerpt from the book Band of Brothers
"The problem with you Americans is that you are over paid, over sexed, and over here!
To which the Americans reply to the brits was
The problem with you limeys is that you are underpaid, under sexed, and under Eisenhower"!
I loved the movie, I think you are making a general statement and trolling for a cultural superiority of people that picked up on things that Americans just accept? Or am I wrong.
I personally take a little offense to the "due to cultural reasons that I won't get into".... what the heck does that mean? This is JMO and perhaps I'm wrong but perhaps others might feel the same.
the main point is if you loved, liked, ok'd , or hated the movie...I thought is was backing fantastic.
I feel that there was this same problem with the Star Wars prequels because grown men were wanting the same feeling they got when they first saw the films when they were much younger...not saying the star wars prequels were as good but they had their moments and I accepted them for what they were. maybe my standards are a little lower LOL.

I just think Americans prefer style over substance. I also noticed more positive reviews after it was released in the USA compared to mostly negative reviews on here from their UK counterparts. Other people here have come to the same conclusion it seems but were too afraid to say it. Seems like our tastes differ.

I think most people hated it for the small plot holes or inconsistencies like taking off their helmets or shaw in the operating table thing. I think Americans see this in every Hollywood film and just think of it as a part of cinema. Europeans may see it as a scientific inconsistency that doesn't make any sense and thus stops the movie and its potential realism/believability dead (maybe because they don't see all the American hollywood films?). I, as an American, just looked past all this stuff and watched for the main story which I thought was well done. Yeah, it left questions unanswered, but my hopes for a sequel make me content with the film.
