Leviticus 22:3

I may be wrong but I believe that the planet in the original Alien was never referred to as LV426 in that film and was first called LV426 in Aliens and coined by James Cameron. There seems to be no authoritive answer as to what LV means however one website states the following; "According to Cameron, the LV in that sense, had no meaning and was used only as to enhance the notation of navigation." LV is an abbreviation for the Book of Leviticus which is the third book of the Bible. Because Scott didn't coin LV426 I don't believe this refers to Leviticus at all however I believe he has deliberately called the planet in Prometheus LV223 referring to Leviticus 22:3. Here is Leviticus 22:1-3 from the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV). 22:1 The LORD God said to Moses, 2 “Tell Aaron and his sons: The gifts that the Israelites bring to me become holy. They belong to me, so you priests must show respect for these things. If you don’t, you will show that you don’t respect my holy name. I am the LORD. 3 If any one of your descendants touches these things, that person will become unclean. That person must be separated from me. The Israelites gave these things to me. I am the LORD. Aaron was Moses' right hand man and he and his son's were God's first priests ministering to the Israelites, God's chosen people. I think that Engineers were Gods priest's to mankind. Mankind was created in God's image not the image of the Engineers........the Engineers were to minister and serve mankind however over time a faction of Engineers became resentful and developed a hatred of mankind and as verse 3 says "they became unclean and were separated" on LV223. The analogy is that they are the fallen angels. Rather than being invitations I think the cave paintings are a record of the rebel Engineers fate and location. All of this probably has nothing to do with the film at all but I thought it was worth some pondering so excuse my indulgence.

@Drakeequation Actually, I didn't forget about atheists... it was just an analogy about the squabbling over dogma, and I can't think of a well known split in atheism, perhaps the agnostics v the 'staunch anti theists?. I don't recall atheists burning each other over the disagreements, unless you count 'flame wars in comments' but it's not much of an analogy if it's exactly the same as whats happening on this forum. so, meh. What can I say, when it comes to dramatic disagreement on what is credible theory, atheism isn't in the same league.

REALLY interesting Zues, it makes sense too. LV223, Leviticus 22:3. It just... goes well with the movie's religious and philosophical theme. Is there a LV 44:6 in the bible too? :) @Drek, I don't see what you mean? :/

@LHeureux, The Book of Leviticus only has 27 chapters. I am assuming you are referring to LV426 in the original Alien. There is a Leviticus 4:26 but I really don't think it relates at all.....I am pretty sure the first time LV426 was uttered was in Aliens.

Direct Bible references... that would be so cheap, so easy. As if everything always eventually came down to someone's interpretation of the Bible. Have you ever considered that it's not as universal as you wish it to be? Perhaps there's more to filmographic creativity than catering to monotheists? The movie openly shows the engineers "seeding" life on a primordial planet, brushing away the christian concept of the genesis but -- oh wait. "God" is probably somewhere higher up the ladder of creation. Maybe he's just delegating the job of life-sowing across the universe. But here's an idea: with or without a unique "god" there will always be life, and living beings creating more life (thanks, science and bio-technology). Maybe what you call "god" comes in the form of black goo. People wrote the Bible with national identity and ethnic preservation in mind. I'm sorry I'm taking that road and generally dismissing your idea, but that's what happens when you bring up religious concepts on an internet forum.

Actually Drekinus there's more going on than you think. Depending on what version of the bible you read... it doesn't say 'separated' but 'cut off'' and rather than 'touches' it says 'approaches'... Say to them: 'For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD. That seems like a perfect parallel to an infected Space Jockey getting decapitated at the door of the temple. He approached, he was unclean, he was cut off. And his head later exploded when 'brought back to life ' after he had already been divinely judged. I think that in choosing the name for the planet, Scott was aware of this passage. And I think he knew people would draw the link. Someone always thinks the bible is relevant to every situation. Or else perhaps the temple door came down to prevent the spread of infection nothing more. And the over stimulation of the Locus Coeruleus of a creature infected with black bio-engineering liquids causes heads to blow. It is after all a part of the brain associated with stress and PTSD, and prepares the frontal lobes and other parts to receive stimuli in times of stress. There could be a perfectly scientific explanation. Which one suits you? DELIBERATELY ambiguous film. I love why he did this.

I think people are starting again to see jesus in the coffee .... you can open EVERY BOOK , from Gulliver to LA Confidential to the Coran and if you want you can find a link in EVERY page to prometheus if you wish . People are today too in love with the "hidden message" ...with " the secret code" ...with "the hidden cospiracy " because are more "cool" than real history . Starting tomorrow i will open a random page in every literature classic and i will find a clear link to Prometheus .

Cuts to scene of Frantz turning numerous pages yelling "Dammit! Every page in every lit classic doesn't have a Prometheus reference!" I agree with you to an extent Frantz but I do feel you're exaggerating a bit. @Zeus...I think what you've brought up is very interesting and I agree with Hadley's Hope. I think Scott was aware of the passage.

And as a recovering Catholic may I also point out... Leviticus 21:20 prohibits anyone approaching the altar who has a defect in their sight. So did Milburn die because he wore spectacles? ;)

@drekinus I don't want to offend you or anyone with religious concepts but this film is about the big questions and it's patently obvious that the Engineers were created by someone or something higher up the chain .........even Scott has said he and Lindelof toyed with the idea that Christ was an emissary of the Engineers........religion and it's concepts are definitely on their minds. Dismissing my idea is your prerogative, but just because it was linked to a book discussing religion seems a bit loose.......you seem to be saying that's what is expected if anyone mentions religious concepts on internet forums....it was just a topic for discussion. The film is full of many subtle religious, biblical references. How about Elizabeth Shaw being barren but becoming pregnant and giving birth to the thing that actually saves her life.....her saviour. Remind you of the virgin Mary?....... and read this; Luke 1:5 [ Zechariah and Elizabeth ] During the time when Herod ruled Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah. He belonged to Abijah’s group. His wife came from the family of Aaron. Her name was Elizabeth. Luke 1:6 Zechariah and Elizabeth were both good people who pleased God. They did everything the Lord commanded, always following his instructions completely. Luke 1:7 But they had no children. Elizabeth could not have a baby, and both of them were very old. Luke 1:26-27 [ The Virgin Mary ] During Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to a virgin girl who lived in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. She was engaged to marry a man named Joseph from the family of David. Her name was Mary. Luke 1:36 And here’s something else: Your relative Elizabeth is pregnant. She is very old, but she is going to have a son. Everyone thought she could not have a baby, but she has been pregnant now for six months. A barren women called Elizabeth made pregnant by her God. I also notice that the Elizabeth in the Bible is a direct desendant of Aaron, the priest mentioned in Leviticus 22:1-3. Shaw's horrible and twisted "virgin birth" happens on Christmas Day.......how subtle Ridley! What about David washing Weyland's feet?.....Christian symbolism. I may be completely off track .........just speculation and discussion. Anyway it's just food for thought and I'm looking forward to my 2nd viewing tomorrow.

LOL Actually the movie's plot is more directly based on Babilonian/Sumerian/Akkadian creation myths and religion. Christianity is kinda derived from those in some aspects, but is less related to the plot of the film. The Engineers are supposed to be something similar to angels (Igigi) who are servants of the higher God (Annunaki). And the evil ones are fallen angels...

I'm not sure who's guessing, who's believing and who is trolling on this thread. It's HILARIOUS, and it's just like a split in a religion... the Sunnis believe one thing, the Shiites another... We also have the Catholics, Baptists, Methodists etc... thrown in for good measure. A bit of reflection would be in order. And if more of us had used some in the cinema, we wouldn't have been confused.

Great find Zeus! @Drek: it's pretty easy to read Christian overtones into a movie that shows as many crosses/crucifix as this one does. Shaw gives birth on Dec. 25th? Has that been confirmed? Was the date on the medpod? I missed that! This movie is an onion and we're only a couple of layers of skin into it.
