MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:03 PMThis is the worst movie I have ever seen. If you need to see some or all of the "Alien" franchise first, they should tell you that. "In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. When one side dispatches a team to a distant planet to terraform it for human colonization, the team discovers an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers." -- say what? That's the synopsis of the movie that I read. If that's what this movie was about, then I saw the wrong movie.
Terrible, terrible movie.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:08 PMIf this is the worst movie you've ever seen, you mustn't have seen very many movies in your lifetime.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:13 PMI'm fifty-eight years old and have seen hundreds of movies. This takes the cake for bad movies? What about the synopsis vs movie? Am I missing something here?

Thanks for your post! Yeap, I'm a "lefty human being" that respect all opinions.
I personally like the movie very much. I've been talking the last two days with friends, and there are "divided opinions". However, the really hardcore fans of Alien and Sir Ridley and involved in the movie business, are the ones that loved the film and have very interesting opinions.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:21 PMThis is hilarious! I'm glad I'm a human and not a replicant at times like these.
Kidding aside, I think you need to talk to the writer of that synopsis. Not sure where it came from but I'd steer clear of where you found it.

Totally agree! That synopsis read that it was written by a bootleg-pirate seller. Hehe

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:27 PMI don't think it's fair to blame the movie for what a synopsis from a showtime website says. It's not as though it was written on the back of its DVD release or something. Besides, I'd argue that you don't need to watch any of the Alien movies to understand it.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:34 PMC'mon, xenodawg. That's a bit out of line.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 9:43 PMI take it xenodawg is not tolerant of other opinions?
kornbean -- okay, so can you explain it to me? If it doesn't (necessarily) tie to the Alien movies, then what was it about? It seems to be a search for God. But, it explains nothing about the various creatures. Why did David "infect" Holloway? Why was David not upset about Shaw's "abortion"? How did that creature survive the abortion? How did the geologist (terrible dialogue and acting, by the way) come back to life? What was the significance of the Ford character.
Were you not disappointed in some of the dialogue and acting?
Was sex between Vickers and Janek (though only implied) somehow necessary to the plot?
Did these creatures really create man? If so, how? Based on the beginning of the movie, they did it by drinking something, exploding, and creating human dna. How did that dna get to Earth?
Towards the end of the movie, if Shaw's oxygen was running out, how were there fires burning (fire requires oxygen of course)?

You have very interesting points. Ater thinking the movie, and in my opinion, I think that tthe film is more focus in David's perspective. First you see "kind of a free android", and when Weyland appeared you see a "different robot". But, never mind...

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 10:26 PMxenodawg is a passionate xenodawg, nothing really out of line with that, true to form.
But that synopsis? I saw that months ago, there were tons of red herrings out there..that was just one.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 10:44 PMYeah...I saw that cockeyed write up and wondered where it came from...and why Fox let it go uncorrected..hmmm..
Lack of due diligence....you got a case dude! Grab all the starprofits you can haha

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 11:21 PMWell, I'll start by saying that I wasn't entirely impressed by the film, but I did enjoy it. The dialogue and acting wasn't mind-blowing, but I could believe it (I had bigger problems with the characters' actions instead).
I'm guessing what you find disappointing about the film is that it generously shows you stuff but doesn't really give you any explanations/answers. I don't really mind this and most of the enjoyment I get from the film is in questioning it and developing my own understanding. The only definite link between this film and Alien is the Engineers which seemingly engineered human life. At its most basic, the film is about the discovery of ancient artifacts that suggest the existence and other-worldly place of origin of these Engineers and the subsequent scientific, and doomed, expedition to explore the possibility of their existence, which is funded by a powerful corporation. As for the non-Engineer life forms/organic substances present in the film, it can certainly be argued that they have a history with these Engineers and as for their origins and how they function, I don't expect a detailed description. After all, it's not as though the alien in Alien was ever fully explained.
Why would David infect Holloway? I would argue that David infected Holloway with the black liquid because he had some intuition that it would cause some interesting effects. Why infect Holloway specifically? Because David likely recognized Holloway's inclination of apprehension towards him and thus a possible hindrance, so why not? And let's not forget Holloway's response ("Anything and everything.") to David's question ("How far would you go to get - your answers?"). Why infect anyone? Because David was there to assist in the discovery of a means to prevent Weyland's death. For all he knew, this black liquid could accomplish that. And even if he reasoned that it wouldn't, it could be a great opportunity to do some scientific observation. I wouldn't be surprised if he was programmed with the protocol of crew expandability to fulfill his role, as was Ash from Alien.
Why was David not upset about Shaw's abortion? David apparently can't become upset.
How did that creature survive the abortion? I don't know. Does that need to be explained?
How did the geologist, Fifield, come back to life? I believe he was infected by the black liquid.
What was the significance of Ford? I'm guessing she was a medical doctor or something.
Why have Vickers and Janek have sex? I believe that this was done so that Fifield 's and Millburn's deaths would go unnoticed by the crew.
How did the sacrificial Engineer's DNA get to Earth? I believe that the Engineer's sacrifice took place on Earth.
And as for Shaw, the oxygen supply within her suit was running out. The moon's surface-atmosphere contained oxygen, 21% or something to be specific, which would allow for fire, but also contained toxic levels of carbon monoxide, which is why Shaw would want to wear the suit.
By the way, I respect your opinion, I just find it hard to believe that it's the worst movie you've ever seen, unless that is you've always been very careful before sitting down to a movie, 'cause God knows I've seen some awful, awful movies.
