BLADE RUNNER

MemberOvomorphJune 25, 20121362 Views23 Repliesi had never heard of Idris Elba before i saw Prometheus but his character was rather memorable and like-able. i just finished watching his television series LUTHER on netflix and i think he would make a great "Deckard like" character in the next installment of Blade Runner. any thoughts ? (if you havent seen Luther i highly recommend it. its a police drama which does have a few of the cliches of that genre but is actually quite good in my opinion and Idris Elba is excellent in it!)

I would like to see the guy from THE WIRE. The drunken detective, I guess... can't recall his name

I had heard the name, but this was my first time seeing him and he dominated in that role...I know he's English and he had that accent DOWN...I want Ridley to use him again in something....really good.

Isn't the protagonist going to be female?
I can easily see Idris Elba as a partner or Gaff-like character or such.
June 25, 2012
@ Forever War not only is his accent switching impressive but he is simply very good and believe-able at what he does. at least from the two roles ive now seen him in.
Janek wasnt a huge part in the film but Idris made him bigger than he could have been. i would say Fassbender stole the spotlight, and Noomi Rapace was great, really the main characters were all good, but Idris made Janek a character to remember in my opinion.
i hope we will see a lot more of him in the future (pun intended).
@David 1
im sure Dominic would also be pretty good now that you mention it.
June 25, 2012
@sukkal i didnt know about the female, i havent heard much about the project yet. that is also interesting.
and yes, i could see him as a Gaff-like as well.

Apparently the next "Deckard" (or whoever / whatever the role is to be) will be written for a female, according to Scott.

What Elba projected, at least in my view, was control and authority without cockiness or arrogance, humor, and a sense of awareness and coolness, not the Miles Davis kind, but the self assurance kind...comfortable in his skin.
I know a few people like his character lol. He made it real, and he didn't crowd anyone out in a scene, he anchored everything he did. A really great joy to watch.
Riddles...are you listening?
June 25, 2012
@Forever War (and everyone) maybe if we start a big enough rumor that Idris Elba will be in Blade Runner, it will get heard and happen? i dont know how likely that is but its always good to think of possibilities and besides rumors are fun! actually i could see Fassbender and Rapace in it as well but that might just be because i liked prometheus so much. but clearly Fassbender can play a replicant since he already has! im sure thats already been discussed somewhere around here though...

@Chris im thinking Blade Runner will be quite a big deal, judging on two facts alone:
1 how iconic the first film was and 2, Ridley Scott. (lol).
i think its possible it will suffer the same kind of harsh division of fans that Prometheus has, however, because i doubt Ridley will want to just repeat the first film, so again a lot of pre conceived hopes may be dashed, but i have no doubt it will be fantastic. and i look forward to the fan site!

I agree, it has huge potential. And great! I look forward to seeing you on there as well when we open up shop!

There's no way Blade Runner 2 is going to satisfy all the crybaby whiner nit-pickers out there. Read this now and believe it now -- NO WAY -- will it satisfy everyone. NO WAY. I'm telling you now, that same whiners complaining about Prometheus will be out EN FORCE when Blade Runner 2 comes out doing the SAME THING!!!!!
Why? Because nothing can be as good as your memory of when ALIEN came out and when BLADE RUNNER came out. It's just not possible. You were younger then, you hadn't seen umpteen jillion sci-fi films with state of the art CGI and 3D and times have just changed. So, any of you expecting BR2 to be as good as the original...you might as well give up that hopeless dream right now! LOL!!! Cos it's NOT going to happen.
It will NOT live up to your insanely lofty expectations...and nothing can!!!
I'm sure it will also have "plot holes" and acting, and a soundtrack that doesn't measure up too! So, just set your expections low NOW and that way you WON'T be disappointed and you'll spare us all the crybaby antics we all had to tolerate and endure here because it doesn't meet your galactic level of expectation.
And hey, if by some miracle it DOES meet your expectations -- well, good on ya!! No one will be happier for you than me!! But I just telling you now...
...it probably WON'T!!!

As much as I agree with you about that - I think it will only add to its size and impact. Negative feedback is still feedback. Look at some of the recent young artists to have appeared. Justin Beiber? As much as I detest his music and think he's over rated, he is one of the top pop stars in the world and only got so popular because of all his "haters".
There will always be a difference of opinion, but for the most point - opinion requires in interest in the first place.
But like with this site and the Prometheus "haters" - opinions need to regulated and respectful towards everyone involved.
I'm looking forward to Blade Runner 2 and Prometheus 2/Paradise.

@PrivateHudson LOL and youre right but im not worried about it, just like i wasnt worried about prometheus. from the moment i heard Ridley Scott was doing prometheus i didnt worry about wether it would be good, i knew it would. same with Blade Runner. i was not at all dissapointed by prometheus except that i would have probably liked it to be a bit longer. but it was great from the first few seconds and all the way until the end in my opinion. i dont believe that Ridley Scott is perfect and everything he touches is perfect, but i believe that hes really good, he knows what hes doing, and he believes in his work. and so far i havent seen a film of his that i didnt like. but you are totally right about expectations and all the complaining and what not. but i have a feeling ill enjoy Blade Runner and im guessing maybe you will too, so i wouldnt worry about the complaints too much :)

just started watching Luther on netflix, and you are so right... Idris Elba is an incredible/dynamic actor. He would be awesome in BladeRunner2! Totally could see him being a hardcore Runner!

I heard that Idris will be present in the film "Pacific Rim" by Guillermo del Toro, ok maybe is a movie Battleship style but with Mechas and Kaijus...but still sounds interesting to hear the name of Idris Elba in the project :)
June 25, 2012
and of course I love the role of Captain Janek in Prometheus, he is a hero and sacrifices himself to save the Earth. Also reminds me of an antihero ala Han Solo (or ala Jim Raynor :p) and I would like to see his talent in Blade Runner.
June 26, 2012
Hi Jens!!
No doubt I'll love BR2!! Like you, I'm a Ridley Scott fan. Is he perfect? No...none of us are. But I'd feel safer laying betting money down on the quality of one of his films than most other directors out there.
Can't wait for BR2 AND Prometheus: Paradise.
I guess pretty much all we'll see released in theaters between now and then will be more superhero movies and kids animation movies (Pixar, etc.)...so I'll be QUITE ready once again for some thought provoking science fiction by the time those come out.
