Has anybody even watched ALIENS or ALIEN 3? LOL You can honestly tell me that you where perfectly fine with a little girl surviving being alone on that planet until the marines and Ripley came and saved her? Did you honestly believe that Bill Paxton (the rambling marine, the guy form the movie Twister) actually made it to the space marines? Oh by the way you guys all want to believe that there are actual Space Marines? And you accept the fact that Peter Weyland cured cancer, and became a knight? And you accept the fact that he was born in 1990? Ohhhhhhhhh and you guys totally believe that we can travel faster than light in the movie? Guess what it's been theorized that if anything where to travel faster than light all the particles would be smashed together......but NOOOO you guys all are okay with that. But the things that you AREN'T okay with are that humans, wearing bullet proof space suits, not knowing what they're getting themselves in to, even though smart and scientific ACTUALLY do make mistakes? That they get high? That they where supposed to all talk like they graduated from Princeton or Harvard with majors in the English language? You just can't possibly believe that running from a falling alien space craft shaped like a fucking doughnut would make you automatically shut off your adrenaline glands, think for a second....hey maybe I should run to the side? Let me put you inside a dangerous or life threatening situation and then if you die, I'll make fun of you because I was able to stand back and watch you run like an idiot, when I clearly saw what you SHOULD have been doing from a safe distance. This movie is ALL about what REAL people, with REAL hormones, with REAL human flaws, and no prior knowledge of an alien race that is capable of raping you with an alien that will burst from your chest would do. Watch from scene to scene and you will notice 100% that just because YOU the viewer know what happened in the previouse scene, DOEST NOT MEAN that each and every character has the knowledge of what happened with other characters. Not every character was around each other character at all times, kinda like real life, so how do you expect one character to know what the others just went through or experienced. (Fifeild and Millburn) for example. They ran away, and came back to the ampule room AFTER the other characters opened the door, and noticed the room changing and the black goo. Yeah that last paragraph was pretty important for you to think about, so you might want to check it again. Go back and watch the movie, it's made as realistic as possible because if there where character running around solving every puzzle, making every single smart decision possible, they wouldn't be very HUMAN like now would they? Given that the MAIN ideas are supposed to be believed (space travel, Weyland actually existing, androids, etc........) Remember, Ridley Scott said clear as day, that Prometheus was NOT going to be a prequel, but was going to be a movie with links to ALIEN? You could have just checked IMDB.com and look up to see maybe who wrote the movie, and then all you crybabies would have seen it was Lindelof, noticed he wrote LOST, noticed that he was known for writing sketchy material, and you could have made an adult decision not to go see the movie? Or would you have went and seen it anyway? You're supposed to go to see a Sci-Fi movie with your adult body, but with a kids IMAGINATION, not go there with an adult body, and an adults thinking pattern because if you did that, then wouldn't the simple idea that 100% of this story is NOT REAL. Would that stop you from going to see Toy Story, or Jurassic Park? NO because you're supposed to be sucked into the story and believe what every character is doing. Forget about the fact that they're actors, being told what to do.

we didn't get a chance to learn anything about any of the characters, not even the secondary ones integral to the plot - Holloway, Janek, Vickers, heck even Filifield and Millburn. I'm not sure if I would have cared. Why would I need to know anything more about Millburn? Or even Janek? I've seen Alien and I'm not understanding the so-called superior character development there. I barely knew anyone other than Ripley, (and OH! Ash is an android!) and even then - it wasn't until the sequels that you really got to know Ripley beyond her shooting and screaming at everything. It's a two hour movie. Ridley kept it tight, meaning there's not a lot of character development as you would have say, in a mini series or a four hour movie. I believe Holloway had more scenes, and they'll probably be restored in the Extended Edition, but again, the main characters hogged all the time - as they should. There would have been people complaining about pacing if everyone on the crew had their fifteen minutes of: "This is why I react like this","these are my interests and quirks", "here is my tragic backstory". Janek: likes women, is casual with his affections, skilled in playing an instrument. Probably knew Vickers beforehand (as she stated she knew some of them), and isn't afraid of doing what needs to be done. Military background. Easy going, amiable. Millburn: Friendly, awkward, likes snakes, isn't afraid to be unconventional in approaching snakes. Thinks it's funny that Fifield is smoking in his helmet. Tries to calm Fifield when he freaks out. More of a follower and desires to be buddies with Fifield - even caving to peer pressure to leave. Ford: more of a quiet sort, does what she's told to a fault. Wallflower, but smart. Not great common sense though. More of a background character and intentionally so. Vickers: Daddy issues, hides behind a cold exterior, but is vulnerable. Doesn't like robots very much. Likes Janek quite a bit. A strong survival instinct as well, but prone to panicking like any normal human. She is intentionally ambiguous. Chance and Ravel: are familiar with each other. Typical males. Think Vickers is hot. They have a easy camaraderie between them. Betting men. And they have courage. They don't abandon their captain, or ship when they should. They even find humor in it. And do I have to list the bodyguard? I mean, should he get some ME time too?

@ Maiafay I can't even begin to say how much I love what you just said, it's exactly what I've been trying to say but it's short, sweet, and to the exact point....unlike my ramblings. to half-quote Wayne's World "I'm not worthy!!!"

"You're supposed to go to see a Sci-Fi movie with your adult body, but with a kids IMAGINATION. . ." Great line deftones1986! No disrespect to Prometheus (I love the film) but you do have to suspend disbelief while watching Sci Fi. You just cannot move faster than the speed of light. That's unfortunately an absolute. So just enjoy the film.

If everything you say is true,,,then why go to movies? Real life with real people is full of contradictions .. Even parents will say... do as I ay not as I do.. Your comment that the charactors have not seen 'Alien' and we have so that gives a hint of the storyline.. In my case I had been reading about Prometheus,,so I had an idea of what to look for.. Even with that background I just let the movie unfold not so much thinking,,but absorbing the scenes,,,not questioning,..or anticipating the action.. At the end we just sat in the seats,,not saying anything to my son...and walked out of the theater hardly sayiong anything,, I couldn't decide if this was the worse movie,,or something so complicated that my little mind couldn't understand the events,,almost a numb experience.. Later in the parking lot we did start a movie talk...and we couldn't stop! ...and I guess that;s sort of the reason for your post,,and this site..Movie fans want to talk about it(themes, charactors,,storyline,,even flaws..) ..after al they are human!

Blink and take a look at the movie afresh as it makes sense from the Engineers’ perspective. Are all these puzzling points people have called “plot holes” really errors, goofs and gaffs? Would Fox release a movie which would have had their execs and the preview audience scratching their heads and calling for clarity? In what sort of film would the cast’s on-screen actions and inactions be perfectly acceptable? In what genre would the audience raise not one quizzical eyebrow? Why, a comedy of course! It’s a comedy of errors with every character putting in a performance worthy of those slapstick comedians of old. But who would laugh at the bizarre behavior of and fatal mishaps by the poor crew and supposed scientists? Professionals just doing their job and getting whacked for it in the most unpleasant of ways? Why, the Engineers of course. Just imagine them seeing Milburn and Fifield’s wacky antics mirroring the hilarious upsets of Laurel and Hardy and wailing, “Don’t touch that! Don’t fall over!” Then there’s Charlie (Chase) Holloway taking off his helmet. “No,no,” the Engineers guffaw, “You’ll exhale just the very stuff to set off the Goo! You’ll be xenoed!” All said in vain, of course, so one of them would open the fridge and grab another pack, only to hear a pal say, “You missed that?” “What?” “That android’s only doped his drink with Black Goo LV223!” “No way!” “Sure and now he’s gonna make love to his lady.” “But she’ll ...” At this point all the Engineers collapse in a great gale of uncontrollable laughter. In a comedy, no one’s surprised about the way a cast member looks when they’re all goofy guys. That’s why the blood spattered appearance of Lonesome Liz fazes no one, not even the guys she’s just pummelled. And do those injured parties point angry fingers at the lady? Nope, they just get on with the show. Yep, this movie was not really intended for human consumption at all! It was made for and has been marketed to the denizens of Zeta 2 Reticuli, specifically the fourth planet of that system. That wily ol’ Fox. Br’er Fox indeed. LoL!

@ xenodochy I don't know if you where being serious or not but that makes perfect sense!! It's pretty much a movie about the human race, and what will happen when we can travel faster than light? We will forever search for our creators right? And if the Engineers created us, surely they can watch our every move without us knowing, and in their eyes....wait for it............ This is how we look to them! It was all a test, and the movie was shown from the perspective of how the Engineers would view us: Stupid, quick to act instead of taking our time to think, drawn to things that are beautiful to the eye but defy logic, appointing a man as our leader just because he accomplished things and is wealthy, instead of praising him for his good deeds, but keeping God as our number 1, Weyland specifically said "We are the Gods now." That's where he went wrong, so the Engineers wanted to torture him, by making him wait so long, do some good for his race, but ultimately his fate was sealed anyway.

And @ Indy John Parents saying to their children "Do as I say, not as I do." Is not a contradiction. It means as adults, we're pretty much stuck in our ways as in "it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks." So parents take all the mistakes they've made, or continue to make as a force of habit, and TEACH their children through that sentence. Pretty much saying....."if you do the same stuff as I do, you're going to wind up just like me. And I don't recommend you go through the same struggles as I did."

Yeah. I think for the most part, the REAL fans of ALIEN love Prometheus. Notice I said REAL FANS of ALIEN. There are some people who say they like or love ALIEN, but aren't really fans. They just say that so they can say, "ALIEN was better than Prometheus." If you have seen ALIEN a few hundred times like myself, you will notice A LOT of references to ALIEN in Prometheus. I've seen it 6 times. Although, there are a couple of flaws(ALIEN had its flaws), it was overall a work of art. The design, characters, and the music(brings back memories of the 70s). Let's talk about the score for example. If anybody lived throught the late 70s and through the early 80s, you'll remember how every movie actually used an orchestra or symphony. Nowadays, a director will plop in the latest rock song into the movie or end credits and that's it. That's laziness and juvenile. I absolutely am tired of that repetitive garbage. So, it's no wonder why youngsters hated the Prometheus score. Pigs like the same garbage and sh*t over and over again. Prometheus did exactly the opposite of what most people expected and it's being hated by those people. You can't change the POV of pigs. They love sh*t and will always love sh*t. As for me, I have a huge screen TV(70") with 7.1 channels and will be waiting for this baby to come out on Blu-ray. Those who hate this flick, can continue to get the latest outing of pig food by Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, or Tom Cruise.

Viva Vasquez.....it's amazing to me that a self respecting individual can lack the the decency to respect other opinions. Anyone who has been a participant of this site long enough to know me, understands just how much I adore Alien and yet, while I enjoyed Prometheus, I found it horribly dissappointing for a number of reasons. That's beside the point. This site expects people to respect individuals with differing opinions. Here's the rub...this may seem silly to some, but I'll say it anyway for those of us who feel as I do.....it's insulting to me for you to question my respect and fandom for a film I have loved for most of my life. Remember....Immaturity only succeeds in revealing the attacker’s foolishness to the community at large. Any willingness to make things personal loses one the argument before it is even made. And whether or not YOU understand that is beside the point.....it's on display for the rest of us to see rather clearly.

@Maiafay............ Exactly! @Xenothinker...... How much more did you want to know about Janek, Holloway, or Vickers? And how much more do you know about Dallas, Lambert, Kane, Parker, Brett than the characters in Prometheus? Ash is awesome, but is he really better than David. And no one take this as a bash against Ripley or Alien as those in my opinion are one of my favorite characters and a top 5 movie. But it is not debatable that there is MUCH more development in Shaw then there is in Ripley. People forget because they have seen it so much and for some it has been over thirty years sense the first time they saw it. Ripley was developed in the sequels not at all in Alien. Now saying that is not a complaint, because for Alien it worked. We did not need to know about her past or what makes her tick.

@Engineering
Imagine if you had the same expectations for the film and came out feeling that the movie sucked. Wouldn't you be upset and want to vent? That does make sense to me./quote] Very good point. @Engineering [quoteAnd it seems to me that the people who don't like the film respect our opinions better than some of us respect theirs.
Maybe in a few cases, but for the most part I disagree. What about the people that say that people who enjoy the film are delusional or too stupid to notice the bad dialogue or plot holes? I can relate to your first point perfectly. I have been hyped for something and been disappointed many times. Not just in movies but also books (I hated the sequels to 2001 a space odyssey, television (24's later seasons), music (Linkin Park), and even video games (Gears of War 3). However, I never insulted someone who liked those things that I did not. @Engineering
Regardless both sides of the argument need to learn some respect for the opinions of others./quote] That I think is a lesson for everybody

@craigamore: You just proved my point. People to hate it as you do. Sure, Lindelof needs a kick to the b*lls, but Ridley Scott put out a good film. Do I love ALIEN more? Heck yes. Is Prometheus still a great back story to it? Heck yeah, too. I actually thought I was going to TOTALLY hate it, but I like ended up seeing 6 times, as I said before. You said you enjoyed Prometheus. You can't really enjoy it with that much disappointment. I believe it could've been better in some areas, but to say it's a piece of sh*t is asanine. I happen to believe it's a 70s sci-fi flick that came out in 2012. If you think that is a personal attack, then that is not my problem. I didn't mean to alienate(no pun intended) younger people, but I also felt 'attacked' on this board when people said ALIENS was a piece of sh*t. I saw that in the theaters and I can tell you first hand it was universally loved IMMMEDIATELY. Where the hatred toward ALIENS came from is beyond me. Shoot, there was even a website dedicated to Pvt. Wierzbowski. Imagine that. Maybe it's been duplicated so many times. Now all we see now is 'soldiers in space' in sci-fi flicks and people are desensitized to that concept. Back then though, that was an awesome and new concept. Oh well, there's no opinion that is safe now. I didn't mean to 'attack' you as a fan of ALIEN. I thought I was only putting down people who hate Prometheus ENTIRELY. My mistake if I didn't make that clear, because obviously you said you enjoyed it. I guess I enjoyed a little more that you. Oh well. Let's ease up and carry on.

@Maiafay: Very well put. IMHO, we had all the "character development" in place that this movie needed. If I want that kind of stuff above more important factors like spectacular visuals and alien culture, well, you know, maybe I'd go to see a film like "When Harry Met Sally".

I think some people are just disappointment the film doesn't deliver whatever it is they wanted. (A straight prequel?). it should be judged as a standalone movie , would it really have been made if Ridley was in anyway unhappy about the scriptwriting? Would he really have gone ahead and made a movie he thought was full of 'plot holes'?

"...it should be judged as a standalone movie...' Using that criteria,,for me I would say no... The experience was just not satisfying...more like wanting the main course of a many couse meal.and being served some appetizer,,,, Now that we sort of realize that this is multi part story,,perhaps we can wait and anticipate/discuss what next serving in the Prometheus meal..and that is sort of satisfying..

Ridley Scott said it wasn't a prequel to Alien, but would be in the same universe as it. So people said okay I can deal with that, I'll judge it on its own as a Sci Fi movie, and maybe get to see some cool references to Alien. But as soon as you all noticed the first thing that reminded you of Alien, that's exactly when your subconscious drove all of those half buried memories of Ripley, the Space Jockey, and the Xenomorph to the surface. And from that point forward, you gave up on the idea of this movie perhaps trying to throw some other mysteries at you.....like let's say "Where did humans come from?" "Oh Engineers?" and "Well where did THEY come from?" Nope, it was all about how "This isn't better than Alien, because I see stuff that makes me think it's trying to be better than Alien and I don't like it." That's the nature of the subconscious, so I guess we can't all blame ourselves for something we barely understand going on in our own minds having an effect over how we judge a movie. So maybe Ridley Scott shouldn't have tried to honor Giger and Alien in this movie? But then we'd all STILL be asking what the Space Jockey was. So dear Ridley: You're damned if you do. You're damned if you don't. Sorry buddy, better luck with the sequel(s)....
