apologies if this has been covered I did try checking first??? so..... has anyone got a theory about the differing spaceship designs there is the round ship in the opening scene when the Elders seem to be present and then the derelict/juggernaut which seems to have a military purpose I wonder if the round ship is under one of those pyramids? or maybe the round one is a huge mother ship perfect shape for fitting in circular styled Juggernauts? thoughts?

Seeing both ships gave me a sense that the Engineers ship was cruder, almost homemade in a sense compared to the saucer which gave me thoughts about the relationship between the Engineers and the Elders, maybe changing from the time of the Earth-seeding to the time of the Prometheus visit. I am of a mind that the Elders ship has no place or purpose with the Engineers base and I'm not even sure it belongs to the Elders..it may have simply been a conveyance for them to use..I'm not convinced at all that the Elders/Engineers are the highest order of intelligence and purpose...I suspect something else is higher

tend to agree with FreePlanet (except about Yutani on the mothership - it is too old) the mothership is huge and would not fit into the temple valley the mothership is millions of years old if not billions the mothership is ancient and if their owners have survived that long they will have even more advanced craft (if you can imagine such a thing!) the derelict croissants are probably only thousands of years old and were built to carry the biostuff (I would accept that they could be very old as well) the elders may be extinct or have evolved into a much more advanced species (don't say Xeno!) David and Shaw will get a bigger shock if they complete their journey than they or us think. The palette for a sequel is so empty - which really excites me - lets hope we get one.

skua, it's called 'levity' or 'sarcasm' -- I'm not very confident about this YUTANI-spying revelation I'm hearing more and more about re: 10/11/12 :(

"..I'm not convinced at all that the Elders/Engineers are the highest order of intelligence and purpose...I suspect something else is higher.." For me this would be a great storyline for Prometheus 2.. As far as the the spaceship in the openninbg scene the 'round one',,,To me this ship is referenced in the beginning of the Cave explorations,,,. There is a shot from the inside..looking out on the moon..of the entrance. To me it looked low and wide..a perfect door for the 'round' spaceship.

well, that mothership in the prologue was on Earth maybe several hundred-thousand or million years before the events of Prometheus and the infection / massacre on LV 223. So I assume that the design of their vessels surely have evolved through such long time.

See I am still not sure of the timeline,, Sacrificial Engineer 2,000....or 2,000,000 years in the past? Maybe RS selected the Saucer/Round shape knowing that it a universal design that humans link to spaceships...and aliens. The evolved design then would be seen as such .. a newer model..

The reason engineers don't like gods is because they still use ships for traveling and not some worm holes or warp gates. So any design we can think of is purely based on our imagination. I guess in next sequel they might add warp gates?

And the giant Mothership or if you'll forgive me: 'MotherNaught' could have gone through several incarnations during those times until we get to that of Prometheus and Alien. They possibly kept refining it and refining it until the central internal area was done away-with in favor of functionality and manuerverability. The Mothership/MotherNaught could be a 'special ship', a designated cerimonial ship, only for special occasions such as an en-masse sacraficial seeding event of a world such as that at the begining of Prometheus.

For Sure! they should have all kinds of ships with different functions and purposes but similar in design...and of course there should be a ship carrying the mother load

Mothership/MotherNaught THe design is possibbly a ring shape,,meant to fit over a central disc..clamp on..and then lift up for the journey. This would explain the ring and disc shaped models. The ring is transportation system for storage disc. Yes that's my story and I am sticking to it!

The MotherShip/MotherNaught was an oval shape when you watch it bank away and fly off in the sky it seems to turn by what we would consider to be on its 'side' but that could be level for them for all we know. That basic 'saucer shape' design was perfected and perfected until you get a ship that is the Juggernaught design, the same basic oval curvature to its contors, hull, structural integrity and configuration except the 'central core area' has been done away with and what you now end up with is the configurative designs of The Juggernaught and The Derilct ships alike. It could be that both The MotherNaught and the Juggernaught/Derilict ships both co-exist, currently, right now, in the same franchised universe of both Prometheus and Alien/Aliens alike, again until now we have had no cause to see it here, it currently could be residing somewhere as yet undiscovered at present.

I realise it was depicted as 'very smooth' in the slice of it we saw in the film but the Elders' mothership looks VERY MUCH like it's got a Giger outershell, just like the Derelict check out the detail on this pre-production sketch:

Hard to say if the first ship is a Mothership, I assume it's massive in comparison to the Juggernaut's. In fact perhaps the Mothership houses Juggernauts within it. Also a race that can travel throughout the galaxy or universe has a huge selection of ships.
I should reach the frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo....

I had not thought of size comparison to the two Engineer ships in Prometheus... It would make sense in their world many varieties of craft are needed for the various jobs. I would be curious if the ShipCaptains are similar to what we see depicted..or even met in today's world: self assured ,proud..demanding..and a little arrogant

i am sure chronologically the mothership predates the juggernaut by millions of years i just feel the elders and sacrificial engineer no longer exist in their original state the engineers on lv 223 dead or alive (and the one in Alien) are only 2000 years old this suggests to me that many extraordinary things could have happened in the intervening time only the director/script writer(s) will determine what took place over this immense time period - if the story is enlarged perhaps/hopefully this what david and shaw will discover

This ship picture makes me think of Stargate: Universe and the ships course heading throughout the galaxy and further perhaps. They probably don't spend too much time on the ship between worlds as they travel the spacial distances inbetween they probably jump from point to point to point as they go through deep space or perhaps through hyperspace to reach their next designation so the ship, in fact, may not be that old, ironically, say - a few thousand, maybe tens of thousands of years old.
