The Mothership

in the mist, the Mothership (as we saw it in the pre-Restoration cut) is a smooth slice of blackness, but you'll see in the (certainly in the top half of the) pre-production sketch that there's all sorts of Gigerisations, displacements and extrusions all over dat thaaang. "..this suggests to me that many extraordinary things could have happened in the intervening time.." THe time frame may be critcal for the story development...especially when there is a closer look at the 'Engineers; outpost on the moon..and find Weyland logos on the contents in the cave. Humans have been there before...
