MemberOvomorphMar-20-2013 5:34 AMI know we all love RIdley Scott's directing genius and he's made some cracking films in his time.
But WHAT IF someone with limitless funds offered to REBOOT the whole pre-alien franchise (it's all the rage, right now, so why not?). And I don't necessarily mean with Scott or Lindelof or Spaight on board. I'm talking about THE ORIGINAL PREMISE for the Alien Prequel, as it was always known to be, and not something that stinks of Stargate or some other 'aliens interfering with the Human Geneline'.
Offered the proverbial 'carte blanche' - what are your thoughts on a total Prometheus Reboot? Where would you have liked a prequel to RIdley's 1979 flim ALIEN to have gone?

But there was an ALTAR to this creation...

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2013 8:45 AMWith regards to the term "All the rage" that is the saying, its an old term and it is worded this way not all the "range" although you can use that in the same context as well. Earlier critticisms about this term not being worded acuratlly with the term rage were unfounded. The term "rage" is used to mean in addition to (current interest/currently fashoinable/current trends) its also so currently "NOW" it's a "RAGE" of interest because evrybody is talking about it. Much like the similar saying "everybodies RAVING about it". It's both the same thing both in meaning and a similar thing too. The guy who originally said this at the beginning of this thread was right in the first place. He was just on the recieving end of narky commentry simply because he raised the issue of the idea of 'Reboot' with regards to Prometheus.

MemberFacehuggerMar-25-2013 9:16 AMDont know if this fits but anyway I was thinking just now it might be good to involve mars. As in mars was the engineers first attempt in our solar system or even was there home planet originally but they feked it up in some way possibly out of control global warming - tieing it into our current situation but somehow they survived and spread out across the galaxy. Or they simply destroyed it in the same way they were going to get us? There could also be a flash back to Weyland working on mars and them finding something from the Engineers. Or/and Earth could be the engineers first terraforming project which was not finished in time for them to migrate to here from mars and so they had to go to another solar system. They then came back to create the perfect beings - humans in there own image but different life forms think different things are perfect etc. etc..... type thing :S !
"It's almost as if they are making it up as they go along" :D

shambs
MemberOvomorphMar-25-2013 3:01 PMI agree to see a flashback of Weyland and his colony in Mars, because I never buy the idea of funding a trip so costly with the only evidence of ambiguous paintings. A company does not waste their money based on nothing and in that sense the script by Jon Spaihts was more realistic.

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2013 7:56 PMExtras on the Bluray indicate The Company had picked up on long-range scans of their own; so they certainly were not relying solely on Holloway and Shaw's 'cave drawings.'
They same extras also point to LV426 as a possible source. (Raising even more questions)

@Custodian; That's because Prometheus was set on a different planet than Alien. Remains to be seen if the explanation will be covered in a future movie or if it will be left to our imagination. Ridley has already stated many times it was a cargo of biological weapons. Everything in Prometheus is not new, btw, it's all old stuff he and O'Bannon (StarBeast) wanted to do for Alien but were unable to for whatever reason at the time.

MemberOvomorphMar-27-2013 2:48 PMShambhala,
it's sounding more and more that way.
Althought, here's a revelation from a Prometheus 2 article launched three hours ago, and I quote:
As the story goes, Damon Lindelof convinced Scott and Fox to ditch the planned ending of ‘Prometheus’ (which would have more neatly tied the film into the opening of ‘Alien’) for something different; something that would launch a brand new trilogy. This was all well and good but when ‘Prometheus’ hit theaters and faced a wave of criticism, Lindelof decided he didn’t want to return for ‘Prometheus 2′ and this left Scott wondering how they hell he was going to make a sequel.

According to Bloody Disgusting, in the months since ‘Prometheus’ hit theaters, Fox executives are “freaking out” because neither anyone in-house nor Scott himself have any solid ideas on how to make a ‘Prometheus 2.’ The report claims that Fox has taken meetings with “basically anyone” with the hopes that someone out there can crack the ‘Prometheus 2′ code. [source SCREENCRUSH]

MemberOvomorphMar-27-2013 3:10 PMIn fact, having found the referenced BLOODY DISGUSTING article, it's a massive HIT JOB and I can't work out if it's kosha; it goes right for the jugular, the GREED JUGULAR.
So my much-criticised Why is The Thing Prequel a worthy prequel thread seems to have been right on the money.
As I suspected, Prometheus WAS always 'supposed to be' a one-shot prequel to Alien and seems to have been mostly set on LV426, as Svanya suggests having dredged up the old Starbeast script as proof. Spaiht's script would have got us there, too, and we'd have been TREATED to this mind-slaughtering Holloway/Shaw love-making scene.

And David would have had SuperVision, too. And Carlos Huante might not have whined so much that his designs were scrubbed in favour of 'some irrelevant marketing imagery'. Funnily enough, Lindelof's 'happy birthday david' was the best thing he contributed.
Films, eh? Easy to fcuk up when greed is your guiding light.

MemberOvomorphMar-27-2013 3:33 PM@Custodian thanks for the info, I see your point and I know that not everything has to end in a trilogy, but I don't think that is so difficult make a sequel. I think that maybe Ridley (or FOX) does not want to do the sequel. Ridley also does not write his films (like Cameron) but they should hire another writer and incidentally listen to fans...Is that so hard? I think not.

Svanya
AdminPraetorianMar-27-2013 3:53 PMWhy would Ridely in any way need more money?? Seriously? If Greed were a factor here they would have made another AVP style movie and pulled in the big bucks. SMH.

AdminPraetorianMar-27-2013 4:14 PM@Custodian ; Ah ok, well what I think happened is 2 young writers were
overexcited at the idea of rebooting their fave film franchise(Spaiths/Lindelof) and it backfired. I don't think it's a greed issue at all. Sometimes the best laid plans don't work, regardless and it's not a conspiracy or anything it's just life, shit happens. :/

Svanya
AdminPraetorianMar-27-2013 4:49 PM@Claudius; A reboot means re-writing/re-imagining the series. The new Star Trek movies are reboots. Prometheus is essentially a reboot based on Ridleys original ideas back in 1978 but it wasn't released as a reboot so it makes no sense when compared to Alien franchise as it is today.
Traditionally Reboot was a computer term; to shut down and restart (a computer system) or (of a computer system) to shut down and restart

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2013 1:49 AMHaving heard all the arguments, for and against such, the thread content still stands - this is why we're here, to cater to the 'left' and to the 'right'. Debate being a forum essential.
Offered the proverbial 'carte blanche' - what are your thoughts on a total Alien Sequel Reboot?
And you know why I'm so adamant? It seems that the DNA-altered Engineer (the Gigerised one in cryo) is the only reason the Giger-Alien looked the way it did. And I don't like that a) because it's a pressuresuit that needs a cryochamber that doesn't need one for a (what should be) pressurised 'flight seat' and b) because GANESHA. Reference: all the human-black-goo interactions gave birth to glossywhite or oozytransparent hybrid offspring like CUDDLES and ARMBREAKER (and all the other delicious ones excavated from the original Spaiht script) and what should have been Beluga Whale i.e. Deacon.
Come on, let's get creative - in case, and just in case, that BD report really is 'on the money' and P2 has 'nowhere to go' narratively. Other than Stargate Universe.

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2013 2:22 AMActually, before I come back to this thread, I'm going to go off and re-read the original Alien Prequel script i.e. the Spaiht one, as there were SEVERE PROBLEMS with it and I'll then cast my remarks in its general direction by way of contrast.
SUMMARY: this is not (uniquely) a pro-Spaiht script thread, at all.
I'm still waiting for YOUR reboot content - and reboot in this context means, "Just make one pre-Alien film (for starters) and have it end with the distress signal being picked up by the Sulako," cue music and crew defrost sequence.

...it's a SEEDER of alien microbic life.
That's why Spaiht's Holloway Found With Helmet Off scene is much more relevant than the "I wanna breath this air," nonsense of the Lindelof version. I don't know though, from page 69 it all starts to FALL APART and ye olde Alien-tropes arrive. The facehugger - yawn etc... and Holloway ADMITS to taking off his stupid helmet. Better that it broke like he said in the first place, when he fell.
Cut to Holloway's helmet glass shattering to frosted opaque as he crashes into an architectural obsidian edge at the foot of the slope. That's it. Nothing more needed. If only Spaiht could have kept it simple i.e. contaminated air from the Seeder.
A (corny and referential) facehugger didn't need to be in an Alien Prequel. Leave that shocker for "Kane" to discover, in the Egg Chamber elsewhere in time.
Having said all that, it still had the Space Jockey as a 'suit' worn by a giant. And maybe that IS the only cinematic response worth pondering. But I dunno... it feels cheap, somehow. You know, like a 'man in a rubber suit' was cheap, somehow, back in the B-movie days.

and if Spaiht's script had have been used, how do you explain the fact that none of the 24 air reprocessor/seeder pyramids that ring the moon weren't detected in a simple mineral scan. They 'should have' spiked like SPIKE CITY.

MemberFacehuggerMar-28-2013 3:17 PMCustodian, it's funny you mentioned a man in a rubber suit, in light of this discussion over at the 'Godzilla (2014)' forum. :-)
I like suitmation in some instances, supported by animatronics and other practical effects, with further support by CGI if needed. Full use of CGI is not my "cup of tea". For example, I think it's one of the biggest problems with 'The Thing (2011)' even though they did a ton of practical work upfront, they later replaced it with mostly CGI. What also hurt the movie was cutting out scenes that aided character development, gave it better pacing (you see The Thing too quickly) and eliminating the original ending of an Alien Pilot instead of Sander Thing. But that's not what this is thread is about... sorry for that tangent.

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2013 3:34 PMno worries Membrane, the one thing I 'really liked' about The Thing 2011 was that they OVERLAYERED the practical with cgi enhancement. Clever that. And it mostly worked. I loved the film, obviously.

MemberFacehuggerMar-28-2013 8:57 PMDon't get me wrong... I really liked it (and so did my wife - she was 1 of 2 women in the theater opening night and yes, I could actually count how many people were in the theater). Even though I really liked it, I was kind of hoping for something a little closer to 'The Thing' in terms of the practical effects and slow-burn aspect. I heard they were thinking of doing another spider-head in honor of Norris-Thing, but passed due to cost. :(

Ref: Cameron's Aliens Space Ant + Queen -- Alien's xenomorph was more ROGUE than drone, i.e. he could turn any Human into an Egg containing a facehugger (basically their hands and spine) that was 'canon' right? So, who's to say Space Trucker, the original Giant in the telescope-seat wasn't transporting Human Traffic and (when the chestburster got him) it grew and turned all the flesh into eggs? That's the REAL BIT I think Alien-prequel team missed.
Space Trucker was hauling Human Traffic i.e. Abductees. :)

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2013 10:10 AMCustodian, how about this:
Those spores were meant for their rogue ( and much smaller) slaves, the Engineers, who are galavanting about the universe in a stolen vehicle making copies of themselves that, unlike the Engineers, can self replicate, eventually swarming the universe with little pink pseudo Engineers.
BUT
The Engineers have twigged to the plan, and their accomplices at the Domes ( where the spores are manufactured) re route the delivery to the SJ planet. Except for one that goes wrong, the Derelict. Because, hey, when all is said and done, this stuff is uncontrollable.
BUT
Neither the SJ nor the Engineers are fully eradicated, and all sleep in wait, to be awakened millennia later by David and Shaw.
The SJ don't bother with the Derelict. It's a trap for the little pink ones.

MemberOvomorphApr-06-2013 3:04 AMMajor Noob,
It's rather cute that there are one or two of us (and growing) who are itching for a total Prometheus Reboot, that obviously wouldn't be called Prometheus (because that's just the name of a spaceship) and I realise this isn't the place for such when so many of the readers and moderators of this site are (understandably) very happy with what they got, edited to death or not, written by like a twelve year old or not, totally ignoring the original Ridley premise of answering "Who is the Space Trucker and scaring the shit out of us," but here we are, with our cross to bear.
From those of us who do care about this issue, I'd like to hear concise original reboot material that gets us to the point in the franchise where Alien Aliens Alien 3, 4, AVP etc remain intact and unsullied (as Prometheus has done to them, if Shaw David 'survive' their meeting with their makers - I don't think they 'come back' as they're not 'canon') so where is this franchise off to?
And why has it abandoned mankind? Does this mean mankind is no longer in danger from Alien Earth Invasion? Hmm, scratch AVP from that lineage then, as the Preds were facehugger hunting the aliens since time immemorial there - despite me having a softspot for those insane ritualistic battles of 'manhood'.
I suggested Peter Weyland (as the Hanna-like covert operative spy or alien abductee) escapes the Space Trucker ship in 2001 and lands on Earth where he uses his superior mind to form Weyland Corp that then (potentially by blackmail) gets incorporated with Yutani. Space Trucker somehow 'lands' on LV-426 during his chestburster's birth and no-one is none the wiser.
Distress beacon screams DO NOT LAND, TOXIC WASTE ON BOARD! Alien soundtrack fires up.
Anyone else among the rebels? :)
