Alien Covenant
'The production team carried over the engineer alphabet created for Prometheus. All the hieroglyphics actually say something, but it might be rather difficult to decode since not all the translations are in English.'

MemberFacehuggerApr-30-2017 4:15 PMOh lord, this reminds me of the TV series Lost, when people were trying to translate those damn hieroglyphics lol.
I'd love to know what it says
dk
MemberTrilobiteApr-30-2017 4:18 PMIt also reminds me of Dead Space 2 with similar writings but there was a conversion chart behind a wall that let you figure out the writings if you wanted to.

More info about the possible meaning of the writing in the Covenant image is in the Petra post:

MemberFacehuggerMay-01-2017 2:30 AMCan anyone out there translate this? I for one would love to know what is written on the walls leading into and in the head rooms.

MemberPraetorianMay-01-2017 2:56 AMThis might help. Here is the Engineer font alphabet...

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2017 11:13 AMIf I can get a clearer picture, I can work on it.
Former USAF cypto linguist here.
from what I can see in the grainy picture:
1st row: KLESAMEB(I,U)EVIE
2nd row: IFEANDBEAT
I searched morphology and if the word is kisame, it means demon shark in japanese. Might be a hefty coincidence though.

MemberPraetorianMay-01-2017 11:49 AMLone, thx.
IllegalASU, thank you, I try to make better versions, what about the Prometheus gate image? It looks much clearer:
LadyStardust
MemberOvomorphMay-01-2017 12:21 PMIt's cuneiform, but I only managed to translate English into Brazilian Portuguese so far...
But David, our David, might have had a clue, since he had been studying Sumarian, Akkadian, Eblaite, Elamite, Hattic... and so on so forth, while everyone else was sleeping.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2017 12:41 PMPicture from prometheus has different radicals on the pictographs.

MemberPraetorianMay-01-2017 3:24 PM@LadyStardust even if we can translate this, it will probably turn out to be gobbledygook....or perhaps Rutger's famous speech from BladeRunner! ;) Hahah

MemberTrilobiteMay-01-2017 3:28 PMIt would be a hoot if it turned out to be something like joylitt said:

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2017 3:36 PM@Lone, what you said does make sense, but the written language itself - even if the producers had cared to finish what they started - is cuneiform in its base, and it was what David was studying. And that's why we ended up having this wonderful conversation about languages and their possible cuneiform form and meaning.
Now, please, indulge me: which Roy's famous speech are you talking about?
Ati
MemberPraetorianMay-01-2017 3:38 PMNo, dk, in Covenant it will mean something, I think, check the link.

You are correct Ati, they wouldn't go to all that trouble then have it be undeciferable!
Ridley Scott wanted the language of the Engineers to relate to the oldest possible hypothesised speech. Linguist teacher, Dr. Anil K Biltoo, from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, was the person who invented that language for the film.
The basis for it, was ancient Proto-Indo-European, which is hypothesised as being the ancestor of all Indo-European languages, German, Scandinavian, Celtic, Greek, Slavic, and the Indic language of North India. They all have to have a common ancestor, in order to explain how they are related, one to the other. This hypothesised ancestor is referred to as PIE [Proto-Indo-European]
In order to demonstrate the full range of the language and how it would sound when it was put into sentences, the intonation, flow and pathos, Ridley asked Dr. Biltoo to choose a soliloquy which was very close to Ridley’s heart, that being Roy Batty’s famous speech from Blade Runner. After his delivery, Dr. Biltoo was then pleasantly surprised when Ridley offered him the role of David’s [holographic] tutor.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2017 4:03 PM@Lone, thank you so very much.
So, I'll go out of this with it: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe....
Or should I say: "get out of this with"? Translation is sometimes confusing...
Maybe I should go ahead and say: "Fui, boa sorte a quem fica e acha que traduz, filme ou não. Fico com a máxima: 'Vocês nem imaginam as coisas que vi...'"
