Alien Day AC New Footage: So What Happened to Shaw?

The Alien Day Stream provided some incredible footage from AC. From what I saw, it seems that all theories of David maliciously mutating Shaw should be disregarded.

We hear David's monologue where he begins to tell of how he and Shaw escaped LV-223 on one of the engineer's ships. We then see Shaw reattach David's head to his body.

Possible evidence of a romantic connection:

Shaw and David worked together to set the vessel on course:

And finally, David puts Shaw into hyper-sleep:

So again, the main thing I took away from the footage is that Shaw and David were on very good terms when he put her into hyper-sleep. (Even adoration.) So what happened to Shaw once they arrived on Paradise?

What's the story, MUTHUR?

A few things i will add to the above...

Ridley Scott said David can be Dangerous when his head is attached, but he is Persuasive and he will Persuade Shaw...

And so once this happens and Shaw is in that Cryo-sleep Pod then indeed David is free to do what ever he wants, which would include with her.

Another key thing  is Ridley Scott said although Shaw will not appear long in the movie, the role she plays is important one to what David latter carries out in the movie.

To me this can only mean

1) Engineer Bombardment

2) Creation of those Experiments... there has to be a Basis

Jonesy, check the :28 mark of the Prologue trailer. You can see Shaw looking at the Star Map and her "dog tag" is hanging in the background. At this point, it's hard to tell when/if things went wrong. Keep in mind that the whole video could be a clever misdirection as well. I'm guessing that David grows quite a fondness for Dr. Shaw (he even refers to her as Elizabeth rather than Dr. Shaw, which makes me believe he's quite smitten with her). I'm going out on a limb to say that what info he obtains about the Engineers while Dr. Shaw is in cryo is what leads him to drop the payload on the planet's surface.

EDIT: Skrapha beat me to the tags. ;-)

Interesting too that the Cryo-Pod is just the Perfect size for a 7ft 3" Engineer ;)

Lot of interesting things in this Footage..

This appears to be a Window? Or a Light but why would Dr Shaw be looking at the Light.

Again the Corridor here looks similar, with again a Light Source above.

Is this a part of the Ship we have never seen?

Does this ship differ slightly?

Are they in Space here?

Or on the surface of a Planet...

Lots of potential unanswered things maybe?  That gives is cause for debates and this was one of the great things with Prometheus.. if it was so Spoon Fed, then it may appease some, but there would not be as much to debate about ;)

According to the most recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, COVENANT is "a cerebral puzzle, toying with the ideas of creation and human nature... The events of Covenant take place a decade [after Prometheus] (and 20 years before Ripley's first Alien encounter), and the whats and wheres and whys of David's actions are a twist we don't dare spoil."

And then we get this clip as a special ALIEN Day present.

Hm. This new clip is so damned intriguing--it answers NO questions, but creates a whole lot of new ones...

Interesting to see how David and Shaw's relationship *seems* to be progressing. The interplay between the two is one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen onscreen--despite being "incapable" of feeling, it's nonetheless apparent that David fancies Shaw. I've discussed it in detail before in a reply to this thread.

From this preview, it appears that David's infatuation with the human woman continues, although I have a feeling the development/results of it won't be as benign as it would appear from this clip, however. Just a hunch...

As I've mentioned before on some other threads, I've been intently watching Sir Ridley's four (so far) SF films--analyzing them and their common themes and motifs.

One common theme (for three of the films, at least) is the development of emotions and proto-emotions by supposedly emotionless AI beings. It begins with ALIEN, in a small but certainly malevolent way. Ash attempts simulated oral rape of Ripley. In BLADE RUNNER, Pris and Roy have developed affection for one another, as has Deckard (who I believe is a Replicant until/unless 2049 proves otherwise) and Rachel. Not only that, Roy is the most "humane" character, sparing Deckard when he could have killed the Blade Runner in a last act of vengeance before his own death. It's only after this display of empathy that Deckard is able to break free of his LAPD masters and flee with Rachel. And then on to PROMETHEUS, where David shows a creepy infatuation with Dr. Shaw. (I discussed this theme in more detail here).

Now we've got some footage teasing more of the interactions between Shaw and David. Considering David has been described as an anti-villain, and his actions are said to be the impetus of the upcoming film's events, I wonder what conspires between him and Shaw? Some ideas include:

1. Shaw and David reach Paradise, but the Engineers do something horrible to Shaw, causing David to wreak his horrible vengeance on them--bombing them with the Accelerant. (IF this is what occurred, it would likely be the plot of AWAKENING, which is said to occur between PROMETHEUS and COVENANT).

2. David and Shaw's friendship turns sour, causing him to go berserk because he lacks the proper emotional responses/capability to handle it. (This would make him similar to the Replicants in BLADE RUNNER--Zhora, Leon, and Pris all attack Deckard when he corners them; Roy on the other hand faces him down "man-to-man" and in the end proves himself the better of the two because of his empathy).

3. Shaw is ill when she goes into cryosleep (as someone mentioned above, she does appear sickly in this clip), and David begins experimenting with the Accelerant to save her. (This would make him similar to his own Creator, Weyland, who is dying and looking for a miraculous cure from the Engineers).

4. Shaw dies in cryosleep, and in an attempt to give her immortality and/or revive her, David begins experimenting with the Accelerant. (This would tie in with the theme of Mortality/Immortality that plays a big role in both BLADE RUNNER and PROMETHEUS).

5. My personal favorite idea is this: David was successful in saving/altering Shaw with the Accelerant. She's gone off to live her life on Paradise. (Or perhaps elsewhere? Presumably she'd be post-human). David, a mechanical being, remains behind doing his experiments. Perhaps his intention is not to just make new life, but to give himself life. (He did look a little hurt when Weyland said he'd never have a soul in PROMETHEUS). To make himself a biomechanical being. Walter, being a later-generation Weyland-Yutani android AND apparently somewhat biomechanical in design, is likely to have a role in David's work IF making himself "alive" proves to be his goal. Poor Walter! Again, this would tie in with the themes of BLADE RUNNER and PROMETHEUS.

Just some ideas. Won't be long now. Can't wait for 19 May!

BigDave,

Maybe the light source that Shaw is gazing intently at is intended to simulate a sun or starlight? Since Engineers are genetically similar to us, perhaps they also need sunlight to generate vitamin D? I have a feeling it's intended for health benefits. But it's alien technology, so I could be way off...

I'm guessing the part in the video where she asks, how long will it take, actually means how long will it take to find/create a cure.

As opposed to how long will it take to get to Paradise.

Prologue video is here btw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeMVrnYNwus

I think Shaw ends up dying due to some goo still being inside of her from that monster she had removed.

Not sure if anyone remembers, but she had an open wound across her abdomen and the embryonic sac that contained the alien, burst open and all that liquid, which was semi transparent/black, spilt all over her abdomen area.

So god knows what  effect that had on her, she looks pale, sweaty and weak in the short video and I think her question of "How long will it take?" is in reference to David finding or making a cure.

I'm guessing David learns something about the bio weapon from the ship during the journey and/or something else that upsets him greatly (That Shaw can't be cured/healed) and he feels guilt for having done that to her and rage against those who created the bio weapon in the first place

When you see him in that ampule bombing area, he does have a tear in his right eye, I'm guessing because he knows Shaw is going to die. (The promotional Weyland website stuff only showed he was capable of crying in sad situations, rather than happy/sadistic, so who knows)

I don't think Shaw or David get to meet the engineers, as the bombing door opens as soon as that ship docks with the docking station.

David killed holloway and didnt seem to bothered about certain crew welfare in prometheus, would you really trust him? Wouldnt shaw question how she got contaminated and realise it was from sex, and holloway hadnt been exposed to the goo any other way beforehand? I cant see how david would really care that much about shaw, hes the one who had made her ill, if thats what happens to her.

also, look at davids body language at the end of the clip as he walks to the bomb bay, hes swinging his arms, he is very very angry. I really cant imagine what would do that to him, unless he wants revenge for prometheus, and boy, he seems to get it!

What I think happens is that Shaw is slowly transforming due to the small exposure to the black goo, David experiments on the canisters of black goo to make an antidote.

When they arrive at paradise David asks the engineers for help, but they experiment on Shaw instead.

hence why David bombards the engineer city with his modified black goo.

That's just my theory ;)

Obsession is a Power, not a Curse ;)

I think the theory of something happening to Shaw during hypersleep (extreme sickness or death) and David just not being able to deal with it, seems most likely. This prologue's main intention was probably to show the evolution of their relationship, which again, is told from David's POV, so it's not to be entirely trusted.

I'm with Rick and others on this:

Shaw may be ill (but could just be fatigue, delayed recovery from the cesarean and malnourishment?) sand David clearly admires, loves(?) her, as much as an AI can!

I thought the same when the trailer came out, BD, and looking at the Nature boy lyrics the 'love and be loved in return' seemed rather prophetic back in Dec.  Nothing is by chance with Sir Ridders :)

His treatment of the natives and experimenting for a possible cure for Shaw would both potentially fit what we have seen so far.

How much David's motivations have become 'twisted' in the time gap is another thing entirely . . .

Other observations.

It seems the cryo pods were in tact on their ship unlike the others in the ship we see in Prom which appeared 'busted' . . .

The tools and drinking 'cup' we Shaw use look alien to me but those on the table look more familiar . . .

'So long as they are no worse!'  Me thinks they are, David.  Me thinks they are ;)

Lots of folk gathered below the ship and many appear to be running to the site.  Question is, what are they expecting?

David looks royally pissed off at the end!  My guess is he found out a dark secret or agenda of the engineers, which may lead into Shaw's fate.

David says he has no idea how long the journey will take.  I find that interesting.  How exactly does that thing travel through space?
