Anyone think the set design in Prometheus is outstanding?

The interior of both ships, the Prometheus and the cabin of the engineer's ship were absolutely beautiful. I am amazed every time I watch it. In addition to the detail, the moving parts and mechanical aspects of the doors and things like the med pod, unreal.
Interesting, I've never read about that. That would entirely change the story. Why do you suppose Scott cut that, and what do you think he wants us to believe the Engineer's motive was?
Who knows... RS had mentioned he felt some scenes effected pacing, some scenes also gave too much away. And then we ultimately have the Re-Shot Dr Shaw vs Engineer Scene.
Ridley Scott did say he Re-shot this as he felt the longer version simply made the Engineer look a bit underwhelming, and so changing it to having him simply Enter the Lifeboat and Aggressively seek out to attack/kill Dr Shaw, but she managed to open the Med-Pod Room door and unleash the Trillobite. Made the Engineer appear to be more Aggressive and only Hell-Bent on the Destruction/Hatred of all Humans.
The Edited Engineer awakens Scene also portrays the Engineer as just Angry and Vengeful against Humans. Ridley Scott had referred to the Engineers as Aggressive $"%£^&$
I dont know exactly why things was changed.
It appears he was not pleased with the whole Engineer Enters the Life-boat and is in awe at seeing the Technology we have and the Hologram Screen with the Violin Girl, and also seeing the Books and having a look at one (maybe Bible) The whole full length (NOT QUITE) Scene when also looking at his reaction to Dr Shaw in the awoken Engineer Scene, did seem to show the Engineer was intrigued with Dr Shaw
It would appear after shooting the Final Scene, Ridley Scott felt shortly after they need to do a Re-Shoot while Ian Whyte was in his Burnt Face Make Up, and have him simply entering the Life-Boat to go after Dr Shaw with only One Intention... Destroy her.
So shooting this after they had shot the Final Battle between Engineer and Trilobite, meant he entered the Life-Boat Burnt and so many Scenes had to be cut as they contradicted this.
So by Favoring the attack on Dr Shaw we got in the Theatrical Cut/Home Video, meant scenes like above had to be CUT... as the Engineer clearly is not Burnt.
The Top 3 Images are not even on the Extras... the Bottom 3 are from the Extended Scene on the DVD/Blu-ray extras
I feel the Original Scenes Painted a much more interesting Picture and one were NOT every Engineer must have agreed we needed to be destroyed.. The extended Scene the Engineer did not attempt to Kill Dr Shaw, but he grabbed her, it was only when she got loose by hacking him with a AXE that he got aggressive.
He caught her and instead of killing her he held her down, maybe he was thinking of Forcing himself on her like David did with Daniels in Alien Covenant who knows... but she soon hit the button to open the Door to the Trilobite.
The Original Scenes opened up more for debate, it clearly showed the Engineers did not need the Space Jockey suits to breath outside, it also shows the Burn was likely from a Acid Attack from the Trilobite (thus more Alien DNA connection).
It also seemed to show a interest between the Engineer and Dr Shaw, did these Engineers never have Females, did they loose Females? Was we created so they could eventually regain Females to Breed with (Genesis 6)
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown"
Which added to the whole story of the Engineers as Fallen Angels as Ridley Scott referred them as.

Great topic OhioDude25. I've spent time in Shadyside, OH on the river and the state overall is beautiful. Welcome and yes, the Prometheus set design was amazing and arguably the best of the franchise. I'm with Lone and I Moon Girl regarding the need for a longer cut of Prometheus.
Biblical Inheritance of the Engineers

That is an excellent point BigDave. The Engineer most certainly hadn't seen a woman in thousands of years and maybe never. I hadn't considered that at all.
This biblical inheritance (Fallen Angels/Watchers) of the Engineers is also cited in David's notes above.
What kind of set design would be required to film an act against the Engineers carried out by their superior?
You mean like the ships and so on? They definitely got that right but that seems to be something that Ridley Scott is good at, the visuals. Both Covenant and Prometheus got these things right so that was good. We will probably see things like that as far as the quality is concerned if they make a third movie, there are other things that I question.
They should give us a longer cut of Prometheus that explain some stupid things like the cuddling with the space snake for example. If there are things that are stupid then at least give us a reason why these things are happening.
Hi OhioDude and everybody! It's been awhile.
Without getting too deep into this, I have to explain that after seeing Covenant, I was deeply disappointed and didn't want to get immersed in negativity, so I had to take a break.
I loved Prometheus and was hoping for a similar tone, and while Covenant delivered on certain levels, I missed the beefy surrealism of the previous film and kinda gave up.
I found Prometheus to be spectacular, and having a history with and love for the mechanics of film making, I too found the sets to be amazing. The Prometheus ship in particular was fantastic, outside and in, with strong influences from Cobb, Foss, Moebius and Japanese sci if all woven in harmony. You can tell they were going for a vehicle that would translate well into a popular toy, but I have no argument with that.
The interior was a character unto itself, and the lighting was a marvel, especially in the opening with David moving through the space alone. Much of the lighting for those scenes was provided by the set itself, and you can practically taste the ingenuity and straight up fun they had with it. Coupled with Wolski's photography, it all felt like a glorious mythology being built. I was not at all put off by the lack of continuity with the Nostromo.
I was slightly put off by the lack of continuity between the Juggernaut and Derelict, though. I felt like the spookiness of the original was lost, or put aside for practical reasons. I do get the idea put forth that the Derelict was more organic in appearance because it was rotting, that's a great explanation but it wasn't a conclusion one could arrive at easily on their own. And the statues (or Engineer suits, if you like) in the corridor were awkward. However, the shot of the suited Engineer in the Chair with the star maps swirling around was pure gold.
Certain posters here may note that this is the most criticism I've ever offered about Prometheus (Hi Lone!). There are other things one could complain about, but I found the overall effort to be so bold and unique that I don't want to dilute it even for myself!
Sometime soon I'll post my thoughts on Covenant, I didn't hate it and the first 30 minutes had me biting my nails but for me, as soon as I saw the first burster my heart kinda sank.
All the best from Chicago!
