It sort of depends. The Alien is most effective when it is in the shadows and you don’t see what happens. Alien Covenant’s most effective killing was the one when you heard a scream and then you saw a floating head. When a monster is too big it gets easier to see so it becomes less threatening. Maybe it can be made to look bigger but it shouldn’t be so easy to see.
The look of the Ultra-morph is well done.
According to this page it is now over 232 million worldwide. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=alienparadiselost.htm
Timmy: I like this topic and yes it is indeed something that is worthy of a discussion.
Some information about the Engineers would be good but they also need to be done right. The way they were described in Prometheus was lame so they need to give this a lot of thought. More information of how their society is organized (mainly military, government, and religion) would be nice. Let the Space Jockey be an Engineer or something related that was one its way to destroy mankind and then things went wrong.
I also think that they need to keep the Xeno in the background. The most effective death was that of Calle Hernandez I think her name is. We just heard a scream and then she was dead. Yes the floating head was sort of lame but other than that it was good.
One problem with AC was that the monster things were too fast. You need to build up tension before things go bad and that won't be achieved if things happen too fast. Sometimes things dragged on and it became too slow, at least for me. In Alien things didn’t happen too fast either but at least there were interesting characters, in AC there were too few interesting characters because they were not really built up that well. They should have had something like The Last Supper in it because that gave us some insight to the characters at least, they felt more human or how ever to say.
The trailers were a problem since a lot was shown there. I think that they were examples of how it shall not be done. Surprise is a part of getting scared and you don't get surprised if you know what will happen.
New things can be good but that depends on how it is done. Maybe they can look at old drafts of Alien 3 to get some inspiration. I bet that there are many things there that they can use in one way or another.
Good relatable characters is a must and keep less focus on David. David was interesting but I don’t want alien turned into a AI story. Unfortunately because of the way AC ended I believe that it could turn into that, yuck. We still have Daniels and Tennessee, I hope that they will be developed in an interesting way.
Unfortunately there were so little character development in AC which was its weakest point. They should have kept The Last Supper in it.
Hopefully we will never get the total answer about what it is. There are some things that I wish that they will keep a secret about. Now when we have some answers to the Xeno I wish that they will keep the origin of the goo a secret.
Eventually, it is sort of difficult to prove since we didn’t see it but it was more like implied. It is left to the imagination (I guess) about what happened which makes it scarier I think. To me it is a good guess to say that something very nasty happened.
Honestly if I would make an Alien prequel I would also erase Prometheus.
Since Prometheus was less Alien in feeling I would make it clear that it was an Alien prequel. Not that “it isn’t an Alien prequel” “or it is like a long distant cousin” kind of crap. Call it what it is, what is wrong with a little honesty?
I would have the space alien civilization life forms (what were called Engineers) that are not that connected to humans and that above all look different compared to Prometheus, they would be more monster like. The one in the middle is what they probably would look like.

Notice that it doesn’t look like an Engineer and not a human so it would not be linked to our DNA at all. This would help to make it more mysterious.
Humans could have existed without the space specie but that the they or some space race discovered that mankind messed up so they decided to destroy us (they simply compared our world to their world and to what they preferred so they decided to get rid of mankind because of how we treated our planet compared to how they did with their home planet). No religious motifs, it could be simpler than that but still be interesting. The space people would be like a Mayan sort of society with a warrior cult that are about to conquer other civilizations. Xenos should be seen in this kind of context, like a bio-weapon. Perhaps I should show what it was used for in the beginning but I am not sure if I would show how it was created. Maybe it could be that it was something that they found and that they experimented on until they got perfection but that it came with a price.
My focus would not be on AI because that isn’t what the purpose of the first Alien movies was about. Terror, humans, and monsters is what I would focus on. Corporate greed, human weakness, war, and making of empires is what my story would be about in a nut-shell.
Relatable human characters that aren’t like archetypes is very important to me. They must be written as relatable everyday people, this is something that Alien managed to get right. I agree with Capt Torgo on this one.
There has to be some mystery also but it shouldn’t be too vague like in Prometheus when they miss parts but at the same time there got to be something that is left up to the imagination that people can speculate about. For example, we didn’t know when we saw Alien what the Space Jockey was and exactly what the Xeno was.
I think that Scott seems to have too much of an influence in this. Imagine how it would have been if he hadn’t gone with Lindelof as a writer. They also made mistakes with Covenant so these are two about average movies from Scott so it is difficult to not see an eventual pattern about it.
Hopefully we will get a sequel to Alien Covenant, I am not too interested in another Alien movie with Ripley in it. We already have four Ripley movies so that is enough for me. No thanks to Alien 5, at least that is what it is to me. I totally agree with Starlogger on this one.
I am not sure if it is a huge disappointment because as far as I know there were some movies that it had to compete against that were more family friendly as far as I remember it, at least here. Given this and that Prometheus was a disappointment I think that it went alright if you look at the international box office statistics but it sure could have been better.
Alien Covenant was an improvement compared to Prometheus but it was far from perfect. I am glad that they decided to turn it around compared to where they would probably had taken it originally with the original Prometheus sequel.
The android route was sort of disappointing. Hopefully they will do it different in the next movie.
My hope is that we will get a story that:
- Makes sense
- Makes the SJ be some life form connected to the Engineers
- Has better characters than both Prometheus and AC (although AC was a step in the right direction)
- Is faster than AC
- Has more focus on the monsters, and the humans
- Less focus on the AI’s (Alien isn’t Blade Runner!)
perhaps it is Ridley Scott that is cooked. And i say this as a big fan of the man.
@afrolito: You can't blame RS for Alien: Covenant. Fox forced his hand on that one because of the small, but vocal, group of fans who complained about Prometheus. If fans had not complained about Prometheus, we would not have ended up with the Fox-mandated, lesser, Covenant, and would have ended up with a beautiful, RS- directed sequel to Prometheus as he originally intended. To those fans who complained about Prometheus, be careful what you wish for.
@MU/TH/UR 9000: I’m all for signing a Change.org petition for Fox if you want to get it started.
'Disappointed' is a very tame way of putting it I'd wager. :)
Well I don't think if for Ridley to decide what he wants to do with the franchise because it is not his property. I think the xenomorph is a character much like Dracula, Batman or King Kong, and it can be brought back to the screen many times along the years, albeit with different results depending on the the talent involved and on whether it is a fresh take on the story or not.
Those are valid points. I would be ok with it if they closed the franchise out. That or find a new direction.
I imagine the studio executives must be reflecting on the following issues: 1- Misleading advertising does not work 2- An intensive fan-base advertising campaign does not guarantee returns at the box office 3- Fassbender is not precisely an audience magnet 4- Ridley Scott is probably not the sci-fi guru they believed he was 5- Too many writers is probably not a good idea 6- Budget could have been used more wisely. And the big question is: How are they going to manage to have the audience excited again about a new Alien movie? This time the misleading advertising won't work. Now I want to ask all those who really want to see more of David's exploits in a sequel: How much do you think a film directed by Ridley Scott, with Michael Fassbender as a top billed star would make at the box office?... Not much I am sure. So probably the fate of a movie along those lines is cable television. The only thing that might work now is REINVENTION.
Ninxen, I think people may say some of the films aren't great but I love them all except for Covenant. It is so pretentious and has crap characters that behave like they were teleported from the local bar. Hope Fox takes a breather and please give the keys to somebody else. The next by Scott is gonna be all Fassbinder anyways and we're mostly over that since he's the only character/story he gives a shit about. Even a dumpster fire can be entertaining but I won't support another one from Ridley. He peed in his own Cheerios rushing this one and not accepting criticism from Prometheus......it's a flop and deservedly so
As for the brand being "severely damaged"....the series hasn't been in great shape for over twenty years.Nothing new, just the latest Alien film every one hates like the past 5 before it
I'm suddenly reminded why I don't spend much time here anymore....
The 43 million from China only counts at 25% so yeah this film is a flop if the marketing budget was over 40 million , idk. Glad the writer of this mentioned the films issues. The marketing technique is great and I love the angles they are shooting for but the characters and story are so so bad, this fear test just seems a knife in the back. I don't care who directs just not Ridley. Covenant = triggered
MU/TH/UR 9000 you are awesome!
That's a pity, mine works just fine. I am glad I read that the itunes one has issues, I won't get a copy on there then. How about the google play version?
David definitely killed Shaw, see here.
As for the trilobite, the black goo is an accelerant and most likely combined with Holloway's semen in Shaw's womb. The commentary from Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof on the Prometheus Blu-ray said it was a product of their love making.
I don't think that's possible, facehuggers detect a host based on their "biological" make up. Even though the comics touch on facehugger embryos gestating in hosts with bad health, the chestbursters never form because of the lack of biological material to feed off. Think of the embryos as human, in pregnancy the foetus feeds off the host body's food ingestion and receives nutrition via the placenta. As Artificial Person's like David has no need to ingest food, he only did so on the Prometheus mission to emulate human traits to make his counterparts more comfortable. And I don't believe David's biofluid would be sufficient to support an alien embryo.
I can't wait for the next installment!
I dunno, I loved the movie. I have been a fan of the franchise since 1986.
This is so funny, Jon Spaihts was so tight lipped about his script and someone releases a parody and even the fans run to defend it. I wonder who the clown was who claimed it was Jon's.
No they are not, after Dr Elizabeth Shaw tried to re-animate the engineer head retrieved from the pyramid it exploded.
David comments "Mortal after all"
Sir Peter Weyland's quest for immortality was out of the belief that he as a creator could extend the life of his creations. Why not the engineers? Vickers knows her father's quest is a fool's errand, every king has his reign and then dies. It's inevitable.
It's disappointing I couldn't get it to work with my PS3
I think if we throw our support behind the franchise and voice our opinions to 20th Century Fox they won't just leave it hanging.
Alien: Covenant was't what I expected it to be, but I don't dislike it so much as to see this story left unfinished.
I just wished Ridley Scott stuck to his guns and finished telling the story we wanted to hear when we got a view of the snippet that became the prologue: The Crossing.
I felt that really could have been something, now we will never know.
I covered this in two different posts previously, but here's your answer in blog form:

Fully agree to drake and adampd.
The film was in the cinemas and it was not a satisfying movie.
The only thing Fox and Ridley could do for the better is to do a proper director's cut for the blu ray / dvd release. Getting us deleted scenes not connected into the movie is pointless.
Great collection of concept art again Ati.
I love the painting from the seventies by Peter Andrew Jones too. It reminds me of the classic Lost in Space episodes.
I agree with BigDave on the need for more epic space sequences. The one thing I look forward to is seeing the reaction of the Engineers when investigating what happened on Paradise.

The Engineers may be able to activate the hologram playback and see everything that happened with David 8 and the Covenant crew on the planet surface. There was a panel similar to the juggernaut panel Dr. Shaw operated in the hologram in the temple described in the novelization.
"Beside the door, set into the wall, was the prominent hemispherical bulge of a control not unlike those that dominated the console of the pilot's chair in the ship's navigation room. When David traced a pattern over it, the slightly translucent surface came to life."
Alien: Covenant novelization, page 234
What do the Engineers do when they discover the planet wiped clean and investigate the happenings of the android squatter who took their ship full of urns from LV-223 and then recites poetry when melting Engineer cosmopolitans with black goo on Paradise?

I assume the Engineers are disappointed in David 8's actions and do something about it.
Awesome! Perhaps he filmed some extra stories about Shaw, the Engineers, etc. :)
It might be more than we thought Ati.
I love the diagnostic robot.
I agreed with the analysis Ati.
In addition to the Alien: Covenant Blue-ray, the release of the VR experience is coming soon. I love to theorize...so I say putting the Occulus on sale for 60 days might have something to do with the release of Alien: Covenant VR.
https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/10/oculus-rift-and-touch-controllers-on-sale-for-399-through-summer/
Alien: Covenant was on time, in budget, and profitable and the Blue-ray is coming out roughly 100 days after the movie's release in May 2017. The virtual reality experience is most likely going to be mind-blowing...so a great lasting commercial for Blue-ray sales of Alien: Covenant.
Nothing is dead except Carter Burke. The Alien: Covenant sequel novel comes out the following month in September 2017. I still say that Ridley Scott filmed more than he's telling in 2016 and we could get another prequel film (Alien: Awakening) more quickly than the critics forecast.
How many AC stories do they have? :)
