VivisectedEngineer Right on. I have spent more on merchandising since last December to now to watch AC in theater prime time at least twenty times at a rate of $12- no exaggeration.
dk Alien Covenant was originally meant to be released in October. Then the date was changed to August, and finally to May. In another article published today, Deadline wrote: "Filmed Entertainment also struggled as Alien: Covenant and Diary of a Wimpy Kid could not compete with last year’s X-Men and Independence Day." Now, that might seem unfair because ID Resurgence sucked at the box office. However, since it was released in the same quarter as a profitable movie (X men), they are not pointing the finger at it.
I Moon Girl That is the most cost effective way to see a new movie in a theater- I am unsure if or how those views figure in the over all numbers the bean counters consider. Fans who can't afford the opening night hoopla will do what is practical and that is fine. A night out at the movies can get expensive fast.
I can't imagine why it would be Walter, there's just too much evidence to the contrary.
Walter is protective of Daniels, to the point he puts himself in harms way and loses a hand/forearm, because it's his duty
Yet, when she's fighting the xeno on the lifter, he stays inside and doesn't offer any help at all
While on board he smiles when he sees his xeno creation on the video monitor, he is shocked and jumps when it destroys the camera.
He smiles when she figures out it's David in a menacing manner.
Then of course there's the music selection.
I wouldn't be surprised if there WAS a backup CPU incase the main one is damaged? But if you notice after Walter is stabbed in the neck, the wound heals really fast, yet the supposed Walter on board Covenant has slashes to his face which aren't healing.
But how can they measure the profit just based on box office earnings? Surely Covenant has garnered way more in merchandise sales than Planet of the Apes or Boss Baby?
Since Covenant's release I've amassed such an embarrassingly excessive collection of Covenant and A L I E N merchandise I could almost be considered an investor at this point... :-/
Like...glancing around me right now...I'm presently surrounded by plush facehuggers, chestbursters, action figures, comics, novels, an art-and-making book, a dismembered Bishop plush
...not to mention the six Covenant T-shirts I got for me and everyone at my birthday and the A L I E N, A L I E N S, Prometheus and Covenant movies I bought... all this I purchased since Covenant's release.
I'm sure I'm not the only one. I don't think many other recent releases inspire this level of fanaticism. I think in the long run, Covenant will prove profitable.
Fox just needs to make sure they have a few mildly evil types on their market research team, to make sure they're targeting obsessive personality types like me, lol. ^-^
joylitt I have no idea if or how studios manipulate release dates at the quarterly level you suggest. It would make some sense to look at it from a bird's eye view from a studio perspective, but to fans- they will likely see the movie regardless of release date.
Ati The title is not misleading at all. It is just a fair interpretation of what is in the article. It does not contradict the contents of the article, it just connects to our main topic. Anybody reading this would infer that there is going to be some pressure on the movies under performing during this quarter.
IRaptus and dk - We could write studies or theses how joylitt tries to manipulate the readers against the movie with the beginning of this title: 'Alien Covenant in the Hot Seat...'
None of the articles linked are about Covenant, just mentioned by them similarly to other movies, such connotation isn't made.
Is he paid for that? Probably yes. By another company? Who knows? Everything is possible. This is the world we live in...
The problem with theaters is that it can cost $12 to see a movie. ($9 if you go during the day). If I had a movie theater near me which plays movies that have just left the main movie theater and plays them for $4, I would never go to the main movie theater. These kind of theaters exist because I have used them before. There are just none around me! So, if there was a $4 dollar movie theater around me, I would also be going to the movies a lot more. Some movies look good on TV commercials, but I just don't want to throw $12 bucks at and 2-hours of my time. $4 is almost throwaway money, really.
IRaptus No worries. It goes to show the links get read and also comes back around to the subject of how should movies continue- streaming or cinema. IMO, the Alien series has a lot of potential. The question just seems to be how best to go about it.
dk It seems War of the planet of the apes numbers are not considered for this particular quarter. I just wonder if Fox didn't put Alien Covenant in a difficult situation by changing the release date a couple of times. If it had been released in the same quarter as another big movie it would't have looked so bad.
0_o; Uh oh...well, I can't lie to you about your chances but, you have my sympathies.
Also, should you get sent on any space missions do not divert from the original intended course - forfeiture of shares or potentially idyllic planet not withstanding!
apologies dk I pretty much paraphrased what you just said lol. I reckon a lot of it has to do with viewers moving away from the Cinema experience to home movies and streaming services. There is usually a large lag before those figures are incorporated into a movies fiscal reports
Fox seem to have much larger bigger problems than Alien: Covenant according to those articles. Namely a lack of a truly blockbuster release this year by the studio. None of their films have done exceptionally well.
They also quote significant release costs during the period for movies including “War for the Planet of the Apes.” The company also cited lower revenue at both the film and television studios.
I see that AC was not the only movie to fall short of financial expectations- even War of the Planet of the Apes was mentioned. It doesn't seem fair to put the burden on AC alone. Perhaps a part of it is a lot of viewers just aren't interested in those types of movies- not neccessarily the specific movies themselves. Maybe if Caesar and an Engineer don capes and tights the movies might sell better. Viewers just seem more interested in super hero films right now.
Another honest topic from joylitt with a misleading title!

Blink twice if your company has coerced you into saying that!
Jk, jk. Well, evil corporation or not, wearing that Weyland-Yutani stuff at a geochemical company is pretty funny.
Also, great movie, Splice. Man, I need to compile a list of all those other great dark/disturbing sci-fi movies so I can remind myself to watch something besides A L I E N movies every once in a while.
Starlogger I think IRaptus just confirmed HL3!
@dk ahh, give me some mo' half-life any time...
VivisectedEngineer Somebody will.
IRaptus Almost reminds me of some Gorman Freeman Black Mesa stuff lol!
Can't have a flute without some fingering! :-)
Hello fellow writers! May I please ask that when posting new threads with your excellent fan fiction stories that you add (fanfic) into your topic title please.
This is mainly so that when an official Alien: TITLE is announced/released it is very distinguishable in the topics
Kind Regards
IRaptus
Yes, David is going to teach the colonists flute playing when they reach Origai 6 and create a massive flute orchestra.
Tom Hiddlestone should be nowhere near an Alien movie, he's a crap actor.
Ridley Scott should be allowed to finish his prequels.
20th Century Fox: Show the man some respect!
So my ideas on the creature were along the lines of it is a bird. birds lay eggs. GIGER done a similar creature holding an egg. it looks like a very similar creature at least.
Also the submissive pose suggests the Engineer has some hold over it but that is contradicted by the Engineer who looks like he has had his stomach (liver) pecked out.
I wonder if this is representation of the LV223 Engineers getting punished for weaponising the goo? The almost Prometheus story.
One other link i have is that in the original extended scene acolyte scene from Prometheus intro the Elders start of by saying "This is the blood of our lord" i wondered if it is instead of the eggs, its blood is what they require and sarifice these creatures to get the strain for life / Pathogen ????
Then why call them lord ? unless it is because the Pathogen/Black goo runs in their veins. so they are treated like Gods ????
I wish we could see all the hand written text in the video. I can make out "breaks from the swarm" at the top and "implanting" to the right of the insect drawn depositing the eggs. Not sure if that is a spore egg to the left, or what the mote implanting.
I guess these are a version of what John Spaith's talked about in the Prometheus commentary when we see the little dots swarming away from the Engineers body as he disintegrates - "The black material that consumed him transmuted into little scarab-like gnats that flew away across the earth…".
VivisectedEngineer a large analytical testing services company is about as much as I can say ;)
Sadly no, not even mildly evil really sorry. Quite respectable.
@dk
Wow, love that Covenant hat! That stuff is really something to look forward to on a cold winter's day!!
You some type of petrol scientist or something?? No judgement here, but do you by chance work for some at least mildly evil big corporation?
Man, there would be something especially about seeing an oil industry scientist wearing Wey-Yu patches on his lab coat.
Kethol I agree. It has some flaws (what movie doesn't), but otherwise was an enjoyable addition to the franchise.
sherris I have an Alien Covenant addiction too :)

FYI that is not me. Adrian Brody from Splice with patches sewn onto his labcoat.
Not me. It was a good movie. Not a great movie, but a good gothic horror film. This video just seems like another media outlet jumping on the bash Covenant bandwagon to get hits.
That narrative does not jive with the fact that the majority of the public and majority of reviewers liked the movie.
I'm expecting the "Everything Wrong With Covenant in 15 Minutes or Less" video from Cinema Sins next.
IRaptus That is pretty funny. I thought they were sew on patches until actually looking at them.
dk bugger. I want an A:C mission patch to sew onto my work lab-coat hahaha. I had a W-Y "Building better worlds" shirt I wore for ages, which I found humorous working in a Geochemistry industry. Only a few people ever got the reference though.
lol yes dk
love your dog as well, they are now all mine.
No such lukk for me. simply cant justify the cash at this point in life.addiction comes first:(
VivisectedEngineer I am keeping everything closed in the box right now for a cold winter day heh heh. However, this link shows everything with good close ups-
Welcome Timo M. Great topic.
