Fans were quick to notice the homage to Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley elevator scene from Aliens at the end of the Alien: Romulus teaser trailer. However, despite emulating the spirit of Weaver's iconic character, rising star and Romulus lead actress Cailee Spaeny humbly asserts she could never be her, while speaking to Total Film magazine recently. The actress addressed her respect for the Ripley character, but made it clear she's tried to make her character her own:

I definitely did everything that I could to bring that character to life. Watching Sigourney play that role – she’s part of the changing of the game that those films did,” Spaeny continues. “I could never be her. But I injected whatever I have in me into that character, and tried to make it three-dimensional – as three-dimensional as possible. So I hope that that’s there, and it comes alive.
During the interview, Spaeny also touches on the film's practical effects (of which there will be a LOT of), how scary the Alien creatures are going to be and how she had to switch off her "nerd brain" during production:

I had to turn off my ‘nerding out’ brain, because I was just like, ‘Wow, it’s beautiful. Ooh, you put the Giger skull…’ I had to turn that off. But it was properly scary. We set it between the first movie and the second. We were talking about, ‘How could this be a child of the two?’ So we have those heightened moments, but then proper horror.
Can Spaeny prove that she is not only an actress that can read a script while looking into the camera, but also truly make the Ripley character her own? Maybe even improve it? We think so!
