BREAKING: Concept art for unmade Alien movie released! (Alien 5)

BREAKING: Concept art for unmade Alien movie released! (Alien 5)

On this day, in 1940 the late H.R. Giger was born and to honor his legacy, concept artist Carlos Huante has shared some of his own personal artwork he created as concepts for an Alien film that was never made...

Carlos worked on Ridley Scott's Prometheus and provided art for Alien: Covenant as well, but both of those films were made. Not many know this, but Carlos was commissioned at one point years ago to pen concepts for Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 project as well - that project never got made. Although it seems logical that the following concepts are for the shelved Alien 5 movie, the artwork does not depict the same style as Blomkamp's own artwork. Instead, the following concepts seem better suited for a Prometheus sequel, or some film closely linked to the Alien: Covenant storyline given the deformed and mutated Alien appearances. Could Alien: Awakening have been another project in the works at Fox that never got made?! It's likely Alien: Awakening was a hybrid of sorts between Blomkamp's Alien 5 and Ridley Scott's vision for the franchise's future. This could explain for Scott's slip of the tongue last year where he stated the sequel to Covenant would be Alien: Awakening, along with the confusion fans experienced when assuming Awakening was the working title for Alien 5.

The artwork and ideas presented below would have made for a truly fantastic addition to the Alien legacy. Check out his works below and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Update: It's been confirmed - this artwork was for Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5!

*Again, the following are NOT concepts for any Alien film currently released*

These look amazing! I hope they will pop up in a sequel to Covenant (if there is one).

Wow, Calos is a very good artist, but these works - masterpieces!

Please, Disney - give the green light for ALIEN 5!

I'm not 100% sure how movie development works, but it seems a bit too early for concept art to leak before the script being finished has been announced.... perhaps these concepts will be for that upcoming game? Since its suspossed to "show us a part of the universe that hasn't been explored", and these alien-mutations and experiments seem pretty unique, at least much more unique and different compared to other games that featured "specimens" like AvP 2010 and Colonial Marines, since those mostly just revolved around turning aliens into glorified attack dogs instead of actually experimenting on them.

Interesting... I have to be honest, these cocnepts aren't really hitting with me. Carlos is an oustanding artist and most of the concepts he did for Prometheus and Covenant, but these feel like too... much. Still, I'm not here to bash Carlos. I do wonder if it possible that Awakening was ever really anything solid. I have always sort of thought that Awakening was Blomkamp's movie and when Sir Ridley slipped up in that interview and mentioned it coming before Covenant (somehow). Maybe Ridley and crew were actually preparing to make a straight up Prometheus sequel while also working on what came to be Covenant

Nice post Chris, thanks!

Carlos always gets my vote. These are absolutely beautiful concepts. He is able to evolve Gigers work in the most clever way, whilst retaining the original aesthetic. What I love most of all, is how he absolutely nails the translucent quality of H.R's work. Whilst some have bastardised the Alien, Carlos has always treated our favourite beastie and it's evolution, with respect and delicacy. It should always be sleek, beautiful and....well Alien!

I don't get the impression that these were connected in any way to Blomkamp and ALIEN 5. Perhaps these designs were done for what eventually became Prometheus? Still, who knows?

Now, if I was in charge at Disney and in the hope that they will still want to pursue Ridley's trilogy/whatever, then I would do what Fox never would or could. Approach H.R Giger's estate, work towards a respectful deal. Then insist that Carlos Huante and Alex Kozhanov/Gutalin are hired as concept artists.

Remembering you on your birthday H.R. You will always be The Grand Architect of my favourite Universe.

I'm wrong!

Having checked out the text on some of the images, it appears these were done for Red Harvest. Apparently, that was the working title for Blomkamp's Alien movie?

Huge discrepancy between a "10 page proposal"-Ridley, and this, plus James Cameron's "gangbusters" script comment!

Turns out as expected this artwork WAS for Alien 5. Which begs so many more questions...

How was these confirmed as being part of Alien 5?

A lot seem to be similar to his Prometheus unused ideas, and maybe even the sequel...

I guess one connecting thing could be how some of these seem to show Xenomorph's being connected to some kind of Technology as in a way for the company to try and CONTROL the Xenomorph.

This has sometimes been linked as a Blomkamps Alien 5 Concept which i questioned often.

However i can see the connections with Huante's work and this image so maybe this adds some Validity to it

Beautifully rendered and conceived designs. Not sure about the eye like structures on the head, they do however hark back to one or two of HRG's Necronomicon paintings. Beautiful.

A bit of a mixed bag to be honest.

I feel some concepts indeed mimic the work of Giger, while others have that generic hollywood monster feel to them. I personally was way more impressed by the concepts of Khang Le.

Some of the creatures seem to have female aspects? Perhaps Daniels has evolved into a queen?

'How was these confirmed as being part of Alien 5?'

That is the question, BigDave. :)

I can only assume as Huante mentioned they are from a Canned Project, and we see what appears to be Technology fused with the various Xenomorph-esque Organisms,  that these concepts are from the point of Human/Androids trying to combine more Earth Technology with the Xenomorphs.

Which does not seem to me like any Plot for a Prometheus 2 or indeed a Alien Covenant Sequel... (PERHAPS?)

So maybe it could be something to do with Alien 5? No doubt once RS became Producer he would haev wanted to look at Blomkamps Alien 5 and changed a few things, he did mention before that some stuff in Blomkamps Work conflicted what he was going to be showing as far as how any Sequels/Direction/Explanations after Prometheus would have taken.

So maybe Blomkamps Alien 5 Progressed a bit further than we know, once RS appointed as Producer?  So maybe these Concepts came from this period?

Other than that the only other explanation would have been a Alien Covenant Sequel, and this is what RS means when he says its about AI?  As in  AI attempt to control/program the Xenomorphs? But then i would have considered a AC sequel to be ON HOLD as opposed to Abandoned?

Critters5: Yeah they look interesting but it takes more than interesting monsters to make a good movie. I agree that Scott doesn’t make things better.

As a general comment I am not that interested in alien 5 but I do not want another David movie either. The David-centricity has got to go before it ruins everything as it is already doing. Save whatever good things that there are left to save in the prequels but it would not surprise me if Scott will do that in this stubbornness to make another David movie.

The first two pictures look the best, I do not have a favorite among those two.

They look great, but this type of art never seems to transfer over to film well enough.  Look at much of Gigers work, it has a really disturbing feel, this is as much to do with the subject action of the picture in question as it has with the creatures in it (sex / nightmares / abstract images.) This has been missing from all the films except the first Alien. Producers shouldnt rely on a just on a "cool" creature.

Can Anyone Translate Huante's Writing, i cant really read it, so it would be interesting to see what he had wrote by the side of each Concept.

Appears Blomkamp's Alien 5 Project would have offered some interesting things, and would have explored WHAT the WY company may have done had it Successfully obtained the Xenomorph, and Engineer Technology.

I think some of these ideas should be explored in Future movies, but not as ALIEN 5 was planned...  But a Movie that Sits between Alien Covenant and Aliens, or one that sits after Alien Resurrection.
