MemberOvomorph02/18/2012Last night I decided to open up the Quadrilogy, which I have watched many times, and watch the one I remember liking and watching the least... Resurrection.
The thought that came to my head over and over is how great everything looked, while the characters, writing, directing and general plot, ruined the movie. In particular the dialog is just cheap/bad. In Aliens, the closest comparison, Hicks/Hudson yelling fuck every two seconds works because they are running on adrenaline and scared to death. In Resurrection the only folks who seem genuinely surprised are some of the b-actors.
Several aliens get loose and they start evacuating the entire ship?? Why wouldn't they lock down the ship? They didn't even ATTEMPT to get things under control.
Ripley kills the alien, jumps up through the hole and says "Is it everything you hoped it would be?" It has no context.
The pirates see crazy stuff and are just stone-faced. No 'chitchat', nothing. No reaction. Being a trained mercenary is one thing, but to have NO reaction, just walking through the hallways all cocky... man.
The directing is HORRIBLE. Stupid zooms and weird angles. Cuts that are too quick...
There are 3 scenes that standout in the film. The first is the scene with the eggs. Waking up strapped into a chair about to be attacked by an alien is absolutely BRUTAL. It is a nightmare beyond belief... no control, something is coming, can't run... Man. We only see ONE guy wakeup, and we don't even see him get attacked by the facehugger. We just see him screaming. It would have been a viceral and very powerful scene to see all of the passengers waking up and screaming as they realize what they are experiencing. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not like Ushbuck/Buckethead wishing for a rape scene in Prometheus, I'm just saying that this scene could have been done right and instead came off pretty weak/tame.
Second scene... The 2 aliens attacking the 3rd 'weak' alien, in order to get its blood to eat through the floor to allow for escape. Great plot. Idiot scientists put some aliens together to see what would happen, and then we get chaos. Creative scene, but way too many closeup shots. Can't see anything but blood gushing. Makes the whole scene feel cheap and not scary.
Last scene.... Hybrid birth. They were trying way to hard to 'top' previous films. The alien 'womb' looked like it was added at the last minute. It doesn't go with Giger's design and just looks plain bad. The end creature just looks stupid and gross. I remember seeing it in the theater and thinking 'they just dont get it'.
Alien 3 I can appreciate in certain ways.. Aliens is a blast. Alien is a suspense-adventure-sci-fi-western and is a work of art.
Alien Resurrection just plain sucks. Does anyone actually like this movie? If so, please tell me why.

MemberOvomorph02/18/2012Alien Resurrection sucks ass, BIG TIME!! But yet again I am one of the very few who enjoyed Alien 3, much more than Alien's!

MemberOvomorph02/18/2012I did not understand this movie at all! To me it seems like they just ran out of things to do with tje franchise. The swimming scene sucked, and the "psycho alien baby" was so budget I just thought "really? That's what's hot everyone suicidal?" what happened to the good movies?

F--- it - lets go for it!
MemberOvomorph02/18/2012uh, dont remember that bit in the movie........
will someone please remove this oxygen thief-pea brain !!

MemberOvomorph02/18/2012I think going into it's pre-production, everyone had the right idea. A good script with a similar premise to Aliens: survive/get the fuck away from the aliens asap with the whole resurrection/hybrid-genetics twisted into the story and Ripley as a reluctant hero. Initially they tried to get Danny Boyle who would've delivered the goods. The problem was in miscasting Jean Pierre Jeunet for his visionary works and misreading what tone he would bring to the story. At the time, he had done incredible stuff with Delicatessen and City of Lost Children but the tone and character of those films does not translate into our expectations. Resurrection looks great as a film, but it's too much of a comic book in its portrayal and fantastical of a world to believe and feel any true horror. Jeunet doesn't make horrors or even thrillers, for that matter. He creates nightmarish worlds where humanity prevails in ironic, humorous, and romantic fashion. The Alien Franchise is rooted in realism, futureshock, and plays upon innate fears of -- interspecies (and genetic) rape, being preyed upon, and being alone in the dark.

MemberOvomorph02/18/2012Wow.
Seriously wow.
I got a few paragraphs in until I realized what he had posted. Ushbuck/Buckethead... just trolling again.
BTW, you are right... I forgot all about the swimming scene. I HATE CGI though... Damn smiling Aliens!

I dont think Jeunet was a miscast for directing the movie, there were great french actors, which were great in his films, too.. I watched Alien3 two days ago, and it really lacks of many things. I mean, there was everything there, great designs, atmosphere ..
the worst scenes ( for me):
- alien escape scene ( mentioned above). With all the futuristic tech there, cloning etc..,200 years from alien3, THEY DIDNT THINK OF GETTING ACID PROOF ALIEN CAGES?
- the cacooned scientist in the baby alien birth scene, who has to explain ( while beeing cocooned of course) whats going on about the altered alien queen´s bith cylus etc..ridicilous..baadd
-CGI aliens
- cloned Ripley and her alienated behavior..Of course she dies in alien3, but there were other possibilities..

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012..one possible , better vision wouls have been to make it like Terminator4, which is one of the greatest SCIFis ever. Imagine alien 4, 200 years from alien3, in a dark, post apocalyptic world, after a worls war 3 whatever..wow

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012once again my 2 cents is that in order to be posting here at all, just to show up here, you had to have found at the very least one tiny thing in each of the 4 films that you liked. Your EGO and Mine are incredibly sneaky but the bottom line is if you are here at all, you liked something, maybe even just one thing, but you found something redeemeable in each of the first 4 films...end of long winded story.

Ripley Clone 8
MemberOvomorph02/23/2012Thank You Spartacus! Too much bashing on 3 and 4. If you want to use a film for a punching bag just look at Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. LOL, now thats a film to bash my friends.

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012I wouldn't say Resurrection was crap, just my least fave out of the 4. Faves are in order they were released. Each film has its own flaws, just some more than others.

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012re-flacvinyl with u all the way on alien3,the extended cut is brings it up to a way higher standard,i regard it only slightly under aliens, tho i think it closer to alien in its horror vibe over action! as for alien re-jection... i consider it the first part of another trilogy,avp/avpr/resurrection! friday nite cinena fodder for teens courtesy of pws anderson to rank alongside his other GREATS res-evil 1,2,3,9,19.....etc Tho have to say, really enjoyed event horizon! tho obviously heavilly influenced by sir ridleys classic, our beloved,ALIEN!!!!!! peace

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012@Ripley Clone 8 LOL you judgement couldn't possible be clouded cause it's maybe YOUR favorite movie out of the series.....just spit balling here lol

Ripley Clone 8
MemberOvomorph02/23/2012@SSgt Fett. Actually man I love each one equally. I honestly don't have a favorite. I'm just using the Ripley 8 character as my username because Ellen Ripley is well known. I love Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. They are ALL great films. so no Resurrection is not my favorite. ALL 4 films are.

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012I personaly hated the ending as well and that creature, but I loved the way they drank scotch in space and the banter between Johner and Ripley and Ripley and the DR. and Coles portayel as well...Loved a lot of that film, including the Betty, and now, these days I want Guns Up My Sleeves!!!

Ripley Clone 8
MemberOvomorph02/23/2012lol, thanks Sparty. Now you got me wanting guns up my sleeves. Damn you Sparty! Damn you! LOL. just kidding. I enjoyed every bit of Resurrection and and the last 3 films. The bashing for Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection can get pretty darn ridiculous on some other forums. I've even seen people to go so far as bash Cameron's Aliens. Its like WTF??!! Every film to me was awesome. Movies are there for you too enjoy and there not there for you to be so analytical and critical about EVERY little thing.
And as one critic said about Resurrection,
"How people defecate on this so vehemently, I fail to see. Continuity errors? Every movie has some. Unexplainable plot elements? It is sci-fi. You've already accepted that a spider crab can make love to someone's face, have a small creature grow in their chest, burst out of it and within hours transform into a huge slimy predator. I would think a clone with memories isn't such a gigantic leap."

MemberXenomorph02/23/2012Hey Guys,
All I have to say is "Father is Dead Asshole" that sums it up for me, funniest part of the whole movie. I also think there is some overlooked dialog in the movie about the android war which relates to some contextual remarks that don't make sense until you see the uncut footage. Like whats his face complaining about earth and how he would "rather be on the ship with the things". Those comments didn't make sense until we saw the uncut footage of Ripley and Winona on Earth and France is decimated with the Eiffel Tower destoyed, then it draws everything together. I am sure there is some post and pre storyline there that we can make assumptions about.
Regards,
Rick

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 1:27 PMI like it. Watched it the other night. I can appreciate all the movies for what they are.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 1:49 PMThe comments on ressurection by H R GIGER on the anthology extras are less than flattering when it came to that film .
I agree with engineer prototype who took the words right out of my mouth with the order of preference and that being the order in which they were made.
Loved the basketball scene where she gets the basket right at the last moment for real as well apparently.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 1:59 PMI'll tell ya something else about Resurrection that was really really well done...John Frizzell's scoring of that film...I actually went out and baught that soundtrack on CD!
