MemberOvomorph02/18/2012Last night I decided to open up the Quadrilogy, which I have watched many times, and watch the one I remember liking and watching the least... Resurrection.
The thought that came to my head over and over is how great everything looked, while the characters, writing, directing and general plot, ruined the movie. In particular the dialog is just cheap/bad. In Aliens, the closest comparison, Hicks/Hudson yelling fuck every two seconds works because they are running on adrenaline and scared to death. In Resurrection the only folks who seem genuinely surprised are some of the b-actors.
Several aliens get loose and they start evacuating the entire ship?? Why wouldn't they lock down the ship? They didn't even ATTEMPT to get things under control.
Ripley kills the alien, jumps up through the hole and says "Is it everything you hoped it would be?" It has no context.
The pirates see crazy stuff and are just stone-faced. No 'chitchat', nothing. No reaction. Being a trained mercenary is one thing, but to have NO reaction, just walking through the hallways all cocky... man.
The directing is HORRIBLE. Stupid zooms and weird angles. Cuts that are too quick...
There are 3 scenes that standout in the film. The first is the scene with the eggs. Waking up strapped into a chair about to be attacked by an alien is absolutely BRUTAL. It is a nightmare beyond belief... no control, something is coming, can't run... Man. We only see ONE guy wakeup, and we don't even see him get attacked by the facehugger. We just see him screaming. It would have been a viceral and very powerful scene to see all of the passengers waking up and screaming as they realize what they are experiencing. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not like Ushbuck/Buckethead wishing for a rape scene in Prometheus, I'm just saying that this scene could have been done right and instead came off pretty weak/tame.
Second scene... The 2 aliens attacking the 3rd 'weak' alien, in order to get its blood to eat through the floor to allow for escape. Great plot. Idiot scientists put some aliens together to see what would happen, and then we get chaos. Creative scene, but way too many closeup shots. Can't see anything but blood gushing. Makes the whole scene feel cheap and not scary.
Last scene.... Hybrid birth. They were trying way to hard to 'top' previous films. The alien 'womb' looked like it was added at the last minute. It doesn't go with Giger's design and just looks plain bad. The end creature just looks stupid and gross. I remember seeing it in the theater and thinking 'they just dont get it'.
Alien 3 I can appreciate in certain ways.. Aliens is a blast. Alien is a suspense-adventure-sci-fi-western and is a work of art.
Alien Resurrection just plain sucks. Does anyone actually like this movie? If so, please tell me why.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 2:58 PM@Spartacus, I know right, brilliant minds think alike I guess. I wish they had an expanded edition of Elliot Goldenthal's score for Alien 3.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 3:33 PM@Spartacus, I love Alien 3 too. The soundtrack is just so God Damn Powerful. It would be nice to have an expanded version of that score. Plus all the scenes that were taken out of the movie also included a large portion of soundtrack. I know Elliot made a lot of alternative pieces for many of the scenes. An immense amount of music was put into Alien 3. I don't know why they haven't released an expanded version for the film?

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 3:40 PMThe film's biggest weaknesses are Ryder as Call -- a weak character and Ryder doesn't have the gravitas to tackle an Alien movie, IMO. I also think they should have kept Wincott around a lot longer. I think he would have made a great anti-hero along with Pearlman.
Whedon has bashed the film for getting his script wrong, but I think the tone was handled great. And from what I have seen of his movies and shows, I think that is actually pretty close to how he writes. His tone is always kind of smart-assy and he's always writing about space pirates.
