Prometheus will bomb?

MemberOvomorphApril 17, 20122484 Views50 RepliesJust a thought? Will Prometheus flop? I mean seriously I am intense about this movie but how many people even realize its existence. Few of my friends know about it and less know that is is somewhat related to Alien. Sci-fi in my opinion is hit or miss with the masses. I think the serious tone and feel of this movie might not jive with potential buyers. Most of my lady friends don't want to see it because they don't even know what Alien is. I feel to many people in this forum believe it will be a mass success but seriously this movie doesn't have sparkling vampires were in trouble...discuss!

@allinamberclad - Yup. Unfortunately sales matters...a lot. Scott is a smart guy and is doing what has to be dont to give Prometheus the best chance in a market where "un-artsy" films are king :(
@Svanya - Im disappointed in your male friends lol! But sadly, my friends are the same too...theyre just not interested.
Even my cousin is like "meh"(which surprised me)...hes still coming to see the film with me though.
Its like someone else said in here, they are fans of Aliens, not Alien so much, and no show of a xeno is just not interesting to them.
Im not American either by the way, Im from the UK.
EDIT - "Yep you heard me, the guy thinks the movie will be boring and artsy. While the girls think it will be fking awesome."
Haha! Thats crazy! Lets just hope it isnt boring and artsy(VERY much doubt it will be boring. "Artsy"? Not sure what that is exactly but it sounds good to me lol)
I only heard about and watched A.I last year and think its a brilliant film.

I'm pretty sure it will do well overseas. Audiences in the US are finicky and the lamestream media tends to show disdain towards high concept sci-fi. The more sophisticated and openminded international audience will turn up.

@Svanya
You basically just described the inverse of my experience LOL. Except that no one I know personally, sci-fi fan or otherwise ,is interested in this movie. (present company excluded of course)
However, most of the women I know (including my wife) hate any and all Sci-fi/artsy movies. My guy friends are the ones that are into Sci-fi and "artsy" movies.

There lies the Risk and a Massive one.
Some people who never watched Alien or took much notice are not going to be intrigeed by a movie based mainly on Space Jockeys and links with Alien.
Those who never liked Alien/s would not watch the movie because of the tie in, and regardless people who dont go watch those kinds of movies would not watch this kind any way even if was not based on Alien Universe.
The Hard Core Alien fans will be disapointed if this movie has little or no Alien links or even pisses all over the idea of Alien Franchise (i dont think Ridley would go that route).
The PG13 is another potentially limiting factor, basically could limit the movie to a District 9 meets Avatar meets Paranormal Activity then again i am sure that PA is a (R) in the US but 15 in the UK.
Thats why i think the US Rating system is flawed. The UKs offer more flexiblity. oh well i guess when it comes down to Age limits its one area that even Americans think sucks lol.

@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim
"Too artsy" - yeah, I saw that reference @Svanya made about what someone said and a piece of food actually fell out of my mouth.
Jesus....I sometimes forget: times have changed in Cinema.
From what I understand, "Art", used to be a good thing...
And Ridley Scott, the supreme Visualist, the man behind all this debate - where did he train?
The Royal College of Art.
*smh*

@BigDave
District 9 was rated R in the states. And I loved that movie. I think it was well directed with a great story.
April 17, 2012
@Drakeus. OMG District9 was another movie I went to see with a female friend, none of my male friends wanted to go, not even when I showed them the short film it was based on (by: Neill Blomkamp). God I loved that movie.

@Svanya
Yeah the short was great. And to think it was an indie film made on a very minor budget. Now thats good Sci-Fi!
Still can't believe your guy friends have no interest in Sci-Fi movies. I mean...dont get me wrong, I know a few men that don't like Sci-Fi movies, but those tend to be Jock's or guys that are not into any movies what-so-ever.
April 17, 2012
@allinamberclad - Yeah, this is the world we live in now. A lot of the time, things of any worth are just ignored by the masses and sometimes thought of as uncool. I just feel like most things today, like film, music and video games etc are dumbed down because the masses are "asking" for it to be dumbed down.
Im shocked by how many of us in here have friends who arent interested in this movie actually. Hopefully they see it and will like it though, thats what matters more. I just dont want this movie to flop sales-wise if it does turn out to be a masterpiece. It would be a huge shame.
For some reason though, I also have a feeling this movie will really do quite well. Im guessing word of mouth once the movie is out is gonna help a lot...unless it completely sucks of course lol

Inspiration will come from Prometheus for this generation as Alien gave to us. I am completely inspired to see this film, whether it be rated R or not. A vast new way of film, creativity, art etc. should come from Prometheus, hopefully delivering the goods.
My only wish is to be inspired by Scott's new work.

A lot of the younger generation are fans of "aliens" and have never seen the original. When RS talked about the movie based on the SJ I was like awesome, maybe I can finally find out just who the SJ was and how the hell did the derelict crashed. When RS said that it was going in a diferent direction I was still interested because of the storyline he outlined. And quite frankly, the 8-10 min. tie-in with Alien is just an easter egg for us fans of Alien. I dont think it's gonna flop, but a lot of the reserved people will wait for people's opinion to go see it after it comes out. And im hoping the studios go with the R version since Ridley made both cuts for the studios to decide.

@dopelganger
Ridley has gone a U-Turn on the movie it was orginally more of a direct prequel, but i recon during the Script writting process he has seen that the Xeno as in these critters.

These have been done to death, but i sugest when Ridley was look at the reasons for why the Derelict Ship was on LV426, who was the Pilot and the Cargo of Eggs and why they was there and they got there.
I am sure he felt their could be more depth added to the story behind the Space Jockey, and when exploring the orgins of the Xeno (which he asked Giger for advice on how his Xeno would look if we reverse the Evolution of it). He gain saw a lot of scope for that process than just the Space Jockey did this and that, and it made the Xeno.
This gave Ridley a potential to explore other posibilities with what kind of DNA that is contained within the Xenos, could also be used for or what else could Evolve from the creatures Genetic past.
The movie is based on the Alien Universe, which i think Ridley will want to have it looked at as the Weyland Corp Universe.
Ridley will look to explore and explain the Xeno, just he wont be basing the entire movie on that Organism as in the one in the image above.
The Alien Universe and Movie also gave us Weyland Corp and its Agenda and Goals aswell as its Tech inc Andriods... The Alien movie gave us the Space Jockey who has not been explored.
So the main scope of this movie would be the Space Jockeys, Weyland Corp and its Motives and Tech. And add to it the tie in with a creation by a Alien Race Theory hence Prometheus and Ancient Civilisation links.
How did they create life, what do they use. and then distantly did some of this Technology some how become responsible for the Xenos? And potential more so what other horrors can the Space Jockeys Bio Tech be used for or create.
So yes the movie is not going to be a direct Alien Prequel not in the same sence that Aliens/Alien 3 is seen to Alien.
But bet your bottom dollar their are connections, and Ridley has said that the end of the movie will directly link to Alien, we will see Alien DNA in a form we will recognise and it will give Alien Fanboys their wish.
But at the same time, the movie will explore in more depth the Space Jockey, Weyland Corp and its Tech and throw in the Creation aspect to add a good plot.
What else they gonna do?
Make a movie about how man finds clues to our Orgins and a Star Map and Weyland finance a mission to that system. Where they then come across a Race who then we will see are the Space Jockey from Alien, who have a simular/same ship as in Alien.
But then have it make NO connection to the events of Alien.....
That would lead far more questions than answers...
Unless Ridley is going for this to be none Cannon to Alien, and basically go along like Alien never existed the Xeno never existed and Weylan Corp never in its future comes across anything to do with that franchise.
A alternative universe if you would...
If this movie thus does that and does not reach its goal of getting interest from general Sci fi fans... then it would also Alienate itself from the Alien fanboys.
How little do you expect the link to Alien to be then?

@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim
You may as well be speaking for me.
@Freeze Him!
Someone needs to elect you Class President. I'm serious.
April 17, 2012
@draekus; I am very serious, the only guys that like Sci-fi that I know are gamer friends. I don't know any IRL males that like it.
My father enjoys sci-fi but not this type, he likes Star Trek and 2001. He doesn't adore Alien or Blade Runner like I do. I don't know many Jocks, I know people in the medical and legal fields and they tend to dislike Sci-fi, at least the ones I know and work with. It is my long time female friend from school that love Sci-fi and online gaming. Again, I will say I am not American and that might have something to do with it.

If reviews come in and Prometheus is compared to the Ridley Scott classics, no doubt in my mind, this turns into an "event" film. Seriously, people are starving for something exciting, thought provoking, and beautiful to look at. For every fan of Potter and Twilight there is another fan out there that wants nothing to do with it. If the adult audience gets turned on, you will be surprised at just how many decide to go back to the big screen theater.
It's not superhero, not teen vampires. Prometheus, in my mind, has the opportunity to be it's own thing.
Like I said though, it needs to be smart, and completely written. Add the bang and some good reviews, people will want a piece.
April 17, 2012
@AllinAmberClad It'd be my honor

@Freeze Him! - Im hoping for the same things man. I do have a good feeling about Prometheus.
@tutelo - Same here! Im loving the idea that this is a whole new story. Having the 8-10 minute alien tie-in at the end is just a great bonus. The Space Jockey, derelict and Weyland/Androids ALONE are enough to get me excited!
April 17, 2012
I'll be shocked if the IMAX screen here isn't sold out for a few weeks.
Do you all even remember the word of mouth on Avatar? They thought it might bomb going into the final month.
