An Insult to true fans of the Alien franchise

MemberOvomorphMay 07, 20123226 Views50 RepliesI work for a company that does test screenings of films, so I know a little bit about the decision making process that occurs for filmmakers in the post production process (no - I haven't seen this film, nor do I know anybody who has). What I do know is that film companies often purposefully deceive the public at large in order to hide a film's true plot. That would be great if this ended up being true for Prometheus. However, in this case, I believe that many of you folks online have this movie pretty much figured out - sadly, it's not going to be a prequel or even an origins film for that matter. This film is truly going to be an original stand alone feature, much like if Robert Zemeckis decided to do a Back to the Future prequel revolving around Marty McFly's neighbors. Of course, a film set in Hill Valley without a time traveling DeLorean would be a true disappointment and an insult to fans. And that's exactly what I think Prometheus will end up being.
I think the general fan base wants to see an actual "Alien" prequel; at least something showing the origin of the Xenomorph. I think Ridley Scott is doing a real disservice to his fans by producing a film that essentially has nothing to do with its predecessors. I mean, what folks really want to see is the "alien". I think the Prometheus filmmakers were worried that if they did a true Alien prequel that it would bomb just like with the AVP franchise. Also, I think Scott didn't want to do the same thing twice, or in essence, monopolize on something that everybody has already seen. That's smart, but not necessarily wise in an era of sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots.
I think he may have missed a good opportunity to explore a great origins piece. Instead, I don't know what we're going to get, but from what I've heard and read online, this movie is going to be a far cry from what we truly want it to be.
That's my word, what's yours?

You are wrong, so wrong. This is a Ridle Scott film not an Alien franchise film. I think 99% of the people in here know that to. This movie will kick some Xeno ass.

I have to say i partly agree with azalard.
I have no doubt in RS's vision and message. But remember, it didnt become a "stand alone" movie until Damon Lindelof signed on.
I have no faith in him as a writer or storyteller.
For those who watched Lost, After the first season at a conference, they said if someone answered right, they would acknowledge it as correct as proof that they had a planned storyline.
1.What is the island? Audience member said "a version of Purgatory"
Lindelof: Nope not it.
End of series...what is the island....a version of purgatory.
2. What is the smoke monster? Audience member said "spirit of an angry person trapped on the island"
Lindelof: Nope not even close.
End of series..... what is the smoke monster? The spirit or negative aspect of an angry man trapped on the island.
He repeatedly stated "EVERYTHING will be explained and tie in"
After the finale "The story really was just about the characters. We just didnt have time to tie everything up." They knew 3 years in advance when the last season/episode would be.
I dont believe anything Lindelof says or put stock in any of his "creativity" or story "premises". I think Ridley's vision wouldve been right on, but mixed with Lindelof......bad news. Lindelof is a one trick pony who seems to take pride in outright lying to and betraying his audience.
You can see this in ALL of the Q&A with Ridley and Lindelof. Ridley tries to speak or tell something and lindelof is giving him this look like SHHH! This is because Lindelof is all about sparking interest and not paying off.

@azalard Great response to all of our posts. There are a lot of people online that are obsessed with things and get EXTRMELY hostile when others disagree. I try not to do that. I try to stay passionate but realize people are entitled to their opinion.
I think what happened with Alien 3 was a tragedy. I would really like to see the film they set out to make before Fincher was brought on AND I would really like to see the film they SHOULD have let Fincher make. That's a double-fuck-up on Fox's part. As for Alien Ressurection I think it's decent. For some reason I find myself liking 3 better sometimes. I think people would like it more if the effects weren't so horrible. I wish they would go back and redo the effects like Lucas did with the Directors Cut of THX-1138. Redo the bad shit they have and add some new stuff as well. I think the film would be a lot better for me.
All I know is I can't wait for Prometheus. None of us can, obviously. That's why we're here. And while the Prometheus ship first lands of LV-whatever it is and not LV-246 DOES NOT mean the film doesn't end up on LV-246. I think it will and I think we'll see a ZENOJOCKEY. If not, I'm not going to be dissapointed.

I am going to preface this: I hate "Lost". I think it is garbage.
But let's stop putting all the blame on Lindelof if the movie sucks. Scott Ok'd the script. Scott shot it, and could have demanded more re-writes. Maybe the first script Lindelof was handed was shit on a stick none of us know.
If the movie is great Scott will get all the credit. If it is awful Lindelof is gonna get all the blame and that honestly isn't fair.
The alien is boring and tired. AvP:R killed it good. And no movie can match up to 30 years of people imagining the space jockey's origins. That movie is doomed to fail so you don't touch it at all. Plus it isn't a story that needs to be told, we know enough of it and ruining the mystery of what is left might ruin the character. Secrets in scifi are great things, lets leave some things secret.
If you wanna talk insults look at everything after aliens, look at 95% of the EU stuff. That is not only an insult to the fans but often an insult to the medium of comic books, novels and film making. Lots of poor stories. Lots of them.

First-off, I would like to commend everyone here (especially the brave TC), for having such a civilized debate. I read every single post and am happy to see that only ideas were attacked, not people.
Yes, we are different from THAT other forum in that our demographic average is the more mature 30-50 range (medium is around 35-40). You're going to get better (more civilized) reactions here than most places (partly because we recognize and weed out the "younglings" (especially the AvP-generation); not in a bad way, just by the mere fact that this is their "daddy's forum", go "play" in the OTHER one).
OK, my contribution to what I have read (short and sweet):
RE: No "hints" of the Xeno in Prometheus trailer.
IMO, incorrect. (a) Xeno up on the mural, (b) ampules laid out like Xeno eggs, (c) proto-facehugger/cobra, (d) I could go on, but that's 3 off the top of my head
I'll contribute more after some other posts go by.

@Shane
and concerning comics, other than poor stories, also poor drawings. Some are just unreadable ( in terms of plot, visuals and dialogue).
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.
May 07, 2012
@shane you are right. But I'm dreading that RS thought (or Fox) that Lindelof would "make it more accessible" when in fact most people dont like Lindelof's version of accessible. RS might be placing faith in Lindelof as all of the Lost fans did. I just hope RS doesnt get burned.
This is not a slight at RS. He just wants to make the best possible movie. I just hope he isnt "tricked" by thinking Lindelof knows what the people want and how to give it to them.
If this movie is OTC as a stand alone AND a tie in, I will view Lindelof as redeemed.

Galzu,
Actually, there's a part of my that agrees with Alalard too, since the original hype was that this would be an ALIEN prequel. Even Ridley admitted this, so he's right on the money with his concerns. When I saw the humanoid Space Jockeys walking around, I got really pissed off. I wanted to see the original behemoth from ALIEN, and all that transpired leading up to his ultimate fate. When I learned why fans were angry at Lindelof's involvement, I almost gave up on the movie (I never saw Lost). I kept saying to myself "One day, somebody in f***ing Hollywood will give their fans what they truly want and not go off on silly tangents". I mean, Star Trek fans got what they wanted with Wrath of khan- so what's up?
But the thing to keep in mind is that the backstory to the xeno was never entirely coherent, even to the original creators. The pyramid, the transforming hosts into eggs, etc.- all these things are true canon elements but never made it into the final cut, and in many ways ALIEN came out better for it. I like the idea of the egg chamber embedded within the Derelict for example, it adds a sinister element to the ship that wouldn't have been there if the pyramid concept survived. So sometimes, changes can be good things. Maybe, the changes Ridley made with this film will also result in something better, but you won't find out unless you see it first-hand. Reading about it is not going to cut it. And as for Lindelof... well, maybe he has considered all that negative feedback and approached this differently- he's dealing with ALIEN and Ridley's reputation, he can't f**k this up and pull the same manuever. The movie has *got* to make sense, especially at the end.
And if I'm wrong, then I'll purposely trip onto a few xeno eggs as punishment... LOL

@NoXword Oh don't get me started on the art. It's awful. But the comics were never huge sellers so they deal with second run people. Then again, I love Sam Keith's art and most of the community hates it. Was it good for Alien? No. But outside of that I fucking adore his art.
Then again, I don't know what percentage of fans are comic book people. The only thing I am a bigger fan of is music, and that is the field I make my living in so I have to be.
@Galzu I think it just has to be accept that outside of Sci-Fi Ridley Scott has made a lot of box office duds. He deserves as much blame. And I am not a lost fan. I hated what I saw and gave up very quickly. But I am giving them both a chance at redemption by buffering each other. Hope it pays off.

I thank God this is not a bloody prequal, as has been said earlier, what the F---k can that add to the story, more phallic-headed, phallic-tounged creatures chasing around dark corridors? Ridley has been there, did that and it's never been bettered. The real insult to the fans of Alien was that bloody awful Resurrection and them Alien V Predators.
When I saw Alien in the Cinema I actually tried to push myself into my chair to get away from the screen, If the leaked story lines and that very disturbing audio clip are any thing to go by, Ridley Scott is revisiting how to scare an audience and it's going to be "squeeky-bum" time again.
Any Alien "DNA" will be a bonus, Just can't wait!

Yeah you can start to tell the average age of this board is over 30. We all want the mystery to stay that way as, well, we have had all the mystery destroyed in everything else we loved when we were younger.
Answers are for the young, you get older you start to understand that 99% of life is just unanswered or unsatisfactory answers. Life is a series of events and loose ends. And that in itself is pretty fucking cool. Much cooler then every thread and plot point wrapped up in a fucking bow. Which is what North America LOVES to hand audiences. Fuck that.
Side stories, new worlds, new creature, loose ties and leave the original the fuck alone. Let things be more organic. Plot lines in life do not directly lead into the next logical step. Which is why the idea of a single prequel is stupid and why the prequel star wars flicks were shit on a stick.

I am a comic collector but not the traditional type (Alien/AvP, BloodRayne, Dead Space, Dirty Pair & Vampi make up the bulk of my collection).
RE: Lost,
I personally enjoyed all 6 seasons (but 1 and 6, especially), however, I saw Lost in the non-traditional way (after the finale and all back-to-back on NetFlix). I thought it was perhaps the best TV to ever hit Television. Pure TV crack! I'm so glad they then went on to Fringe to make what I consider to be the second-best TV to ever hit Television. But I am still partial to shows like Space 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, Dr Who (except the last doctor), The Incredible Hulk (70's version), etc, etc.

All these movies are about the Giger-verse as far as I'm concerned. I don't pay to see one kind of alien, or Ripley, or 2001 interiors. I pay to see the Gigerverse on screen. That's the only thing special about the Alien universe, as it sure as shit aint space settings, ships, space truckers, or a million other things I can see elsewhere.
The only dissappointment is that Giger didn't get to design the whole damn film

I still love the Old Adam Warren Dirty Pair.
I collect tons of stuff. My shelves are filled with everything from Superheroes to half the stuff drawn and quarterly puts out to Heavy Metal to Akira. I love comics. I love good comics.

OK, enough of polite debate and civil discussion.
Time for serious, pointless and highly unconstructive insults!
And also, let's get as much personal as possible, after all we don't know much about each other, so there's room for heavy speculation and creative sterile finger-pointing!
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

I'm amazed people can say how disappointed they are by a film that probably isn't even finished being edited yet. Do you know what I do if i think a film is going to be disappointing? Nothing. I ignore it, and go watch a film that is worth watching. No one is going to try and persuade you into the theatre, you see the trailer, youve seen what kind of film this is going to be by the extensive analysis it's had here, so please, if you think there is going to be a better film in the scifi genre coming out in the next few years, please do tell us what you think it's going to be.
Next we'll hear "Ridley raped my Xeno!!".
If you watch the making of Alien, ridleys second movie, you'll see that he didn't give a fuck who he upset, how long they'd been in the business, and what their reputaion was, he got his say on everything, score, titles, art, everything. And you think Lindelof is going to call one shot? he had a wet dream writing FOR RS, and he got the gig based on the adult themed scripts he did for Lost. Yes I know some people hated it, i loved it. I can't imagine a better ending (for adults).

This is my take on the matter:
I, for one, don't mind at all if there are no "Aliens" in the movie. I like Sir Ridleys Scott science fiction movies a lot and I am much more interested in the story and the aesthetics than in a space creature.
I can not say I'm a true Alien fan [as in, I collect everything that is Alien related], because I am not. Alien to me is a great movie that raised a series of questions that are universal. The grotesquerie is just a bonus.
As to Prometheus, I am very glad Sir Ridley went back to Science Fiction. For some reason, SF and Horror movies are the most interesting ones and mind boggling as well as aesthetics compeling.
And that is all.
Ask nothing from no one. Demand nothing from no one. Expect nothing from no one.

Great feedback from everybody! I visit this site more than any other- The movie will do fine without a xeno. I am a true fan who has loved Aliens all through the 80's, and 90's. Probably the most exciting thing I want to see is the space jockey chair rising, the juggernaut flying, and the space jo9ckey itself. I can already see a MASSIVE resemblance to the xeno, and the space jockeys seen in trailers, and stills. We have known from day 1 that this is a loosely based prequel. If there is a Prometheus 2 already being penned, why in earth would it lead up to the events in Alien? The fan service the last 8-12 minutes will probably involve the birth of the facehugger...this is my bet. The facehugger is used by a jockey to sacrifice himself. boom...the xeno we know and love
David 1, just ordered me a Alien artist proof statue from palisades/ seen it?
