An Insult to true fans of the Alien franchise

I work for a company that does test screenings of films, so I know a little bit about the decision making process that occurs for filmmakers in the post production process (no - I haven't seen this film, nor do I know anybody who has). What I do know is that film companies often purposefully deceive the public at large in order to hide a film's true plot. That would be great if this ended up being true for Prometheus. However, in this case, I believe that many of you folks online have this movie pretty much figured out - sadly, it's not going to be a prequel or even an origins film for that matter. This film is truly going to be an original stand alone feature, much like if Robert Zemeckis decided to do a Back to the Future prequel revolving around Marty McFly's neighbors. Of course, a film set in Hill Valley without a time traveling DeLorean would be a true disappointment and an insult to fans. And that's exactly what I think Prometheus will end up being. I think the general fan base wants to see an actual "Alien" prequel; at least something showing the origin of the Xenomorph. I think Ridley Scott is doing a real disservice to his fans by producing a film that essentially has nothing to do with its predecessors. I mean, what folks really want to see is the "alien". I think the Prometheus filmmakers were worried that if they did a true Alien prequel that it would bomb just like with the AVP franchise. Also, I think Scott didn't want to do the same thing twice, or in essence, monopolize on something that everybody has already seen. That's smart, but not necessarily wise in an era of sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots. I think he may have missed a good opportunity to explore a great origins piece. Instead, I don't know what we're going to get, but from what I've heard and read online, this movie is going to be a far cry from what we truly want it to be. That's my word, what's yours? -Thomas

hi Davefried81: I'm afraid I did not. Can you be so kind as to post a picture of it?

So we can say that hard core fans want to see the same thing over and over and over again. I say this because I frankly do not see the problem to see a spin-off whose advantages are: 1) EXPANSION Alien universe 2) A prequel much less predictable and obvious (unlike Star Wars) 3) Probably will not see Alien, 1979 in the same way (after seeing Pormetheus) 4) But most importantly: made by Ridley Scott Ok, I know that Lindelof is not what many would have liked but the simple fact of being Scott deserves the benefit of the doubt IMHO.

I have bUt one tiny thing to say, we HAVE seen the XENO and WE will see it and as Ridley said just NOT in the format we remember it as...and what bugs me is how in the name of whatever SO VERY MANY people can see the things we have seen and not get THAT this thing we are seeing reeking Havoc on the ship...At the very least...This thing IS 100% THE PREDECESSOR TO XENOMORPH IN ALIEN. and i JUST do not for the life of me understand how so many people can have this all so very wrong !!! It's so obvious and so blatant I just do not understand how so many people, WHO SAW ALIEN no less, still don't get it. I say this with all the affection in the world...you would have to be deaf and blind not to get that!!!

The only thing that is an insult to Alien fans is AVP2. **(AVP wasn't too bad BUT omfg AVP2 was just HORRIBLE... )>.< I love Ridley Scott as a movie maker. I remember how "Legend" mesmerized me when I was little, the way the dust hung in the air and the sunbeams and flower petals danced around the unicorns. Same with Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down. I love his style. He makes me smile and I am so glad to see this movie regardless of what is in it because it's him directing Sci-Fi, something he hasn't done since Alien. I know I will love it.

See, I wish he did it the other way. Make the xeno really old and have the monsters seen as updates on it. Go the other way. it would make more sense with how we see the space jockey in the original.

completely agreed Svanya well said. That film is a Disgrace to the entire franchise! And IMHO the first one is a lot of the same...almost as much... but a little less so because... it had some really great individual camera shots and some very interesting ideas in it.

OK, it's definitely a prequel but I put my faith in the event that this film will be more original and full of news (ie a real beginning and not a clone of Alien)

I still think that it might be possible that the eggs, facehugger, and the LV426 derelict are from a more ancient time; even before mankind was created; the remains of a potential disaster for another alien race created by the engineers ( perhaps now extinct for other reasons ). I would like the mystery of ALIEN to remain untouched, however like many of you have said before, we are definitely in for more creatures, new worlds, new technology and great storytelling; and if that gives some sort of new clue or glimpse related to ALIEN , that is a bonus. We are talking about expansion, in a good way. Like you guys I have my doubts with Lindelof and Spaihts, but remember that the script was reworked for about 6 weeks or so; it's not a lot of time but it is something to consider that Ridley didn't take the first thing that was handed to him. The only thing that kind of remains uncertain for me; is that I remember the expectation I had for "Hannibal", even knowing that "Clarice " was replaced, I was still encouraged to see it after reading the book because Scott was directing it. I'll have to say even if I don't hate Hannibal and I still consider it fun towatch, it is not my favorite film from the series.

The main aspects for making this a direct prequel would be. Show a scene where the Derelict lands on LV 426 Show what happens to the Space Jockey at the end. We would also need to in events of the film, explore who the Space Jockey is/are why. Why did they have Eggs and how was they created for what purpose. But then that does not form a great basis for a full movie, Ridley looked at what else Alien was about. And thus he felt there was more of a Story to be told thats not been covered about who the Jockeys was, rather than the done to death Xenos. Also what about Weyland Inc and its Orgins, its Agenda again this was a area that could be explored... Is the Xeno the only invention of the Space Jockey? What if they created more things, what if more things could be created from simular process and DNA as what created the Xeno. This is what they went for..... We will see the events prior to the Derelict that land on LV426 in Alien this will be in the movie and it will tie in and explain Alien but it will be a scene like the Water Fall one that would be a Visual Narative and not actually set in the same timeline of Promthetheus but as a event that happened many many years prior.

1. Prometheus is obviously connected to Alien. Just because the movie isn't specifically about xenos does not mean that it is not related. There seems little doubt that Prometheus takes place in the alien film universe, this alone is enough of a connection for me. 2. I have complete faith in RS to do good by fans by creating a film that is related but also completely new and fresh.
