Does David breathe?

I ask because in some of the pics I've seen he is wearing the space suit all be it without the helmet. But this would lead me to believe that at some point he was using the helmet. If so, then I assume he would breathe, right? But why would someone create a android that needs to breathe? Wouldn't that actually be considered a weakness? I mean think about it. You have a android on board your spaceship. You travel a vast distance. Any robot would or should have as a prime function to protect the crew. So here you possibly are on a alien planet and your expensive android is killed off because of lack of air.

Congratulations! A unique topic on THIS forum!
Well, we see him wearing a helmet and he doesn't take it off till he reaches the breathable air inside the silo (temple). So he probably does.

Im sure his breathing is the equivelant of him eating or drinking... realizm, not neccesity.

If he is like Ash and eats (not sure why Bishop gave his tray away), then breathing might be essential to some kind of android respiration to aid digestion. Of course, Ash could have been packing food into a cavity just keeping up appearances, but you gotta wonder about the "milk". I assume it was a blood equivalent and if these androids are a step below replicants (that MUST eat, breath, s__t, etc.) then quite possibly an early model such as David (model 8) might certainly be breathing out of necessity (not just for appearance's sake).

I wondered that about Ash to be honest......... He eats and drinks, but I'm guessing that was just to help him blend in with the Nostromo's crew. Everyone on board the Prometheus knows David is an android, so does he try to maintain using human like attributes to make THEM feel more comfortable around him?

"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

I would add this....we do know that other human crew take off their helmets inside the structure....so we know they can breathe, maybe he does to...who knows?

Linking may super fave link about Androids for the 300th time, LOL!
It says they need a similar atmosphere and pressure and humans. Also, they can eat but gain no nutrition from it. Do have a look at the link, and don't be scared off because some AVP stuff is there or you might miss out. :P

Wow! The search-bots picked this new thread up 7 minutes ago. That is fast!
I did find this:
"'Why are youwearing one of those suits? You don’t have to breathe.' It ends up withDavid [Michael Fassbender] saying, 'Not too close, I hope,' referring tobeing told, 'We’re making you guys just like us.' You don’t know who’sinsulting who there. That’s when those turn-abouts starts to occur."
I'll allow you guys to speculate....
The complete conversation which the above excerpt was taken:
"
Here is a quote from Ridley about how David is treated by human crew:
How did you approach the android and what he would be capable of?
Ridley Scott:
"What was important was the story. There’s nothing new about an
android. There’s nothing new about a robot. That idea is 800 years old.
So then, embrace what it is. By embracing it, he becomes that much more
interesting because he’s just part of the ship. In a sense, he’s not
just a butler, but he’s housekeeper and maintenance man who legitimately
does not need to sleep. From that, then he also becomes extremely
useful during the story, as it evolves. There’s a great scene where
Holloway [played by Logan Marshall-Green]
is actually a bit of a bitch, occasionally, says, 'Hey, you, boy!,' to
him. I thought that was real cheeky. And then he says, 'Why are you
wearing one of those suits? You don’t have to breathe.' It ends up with
David [Michael Fassbender] saying, 'Not too close, I hope,' referring to
being told, 'We’re making you guys just like us.' You don’t know who’s
insulting who there. That’s when those turn-abouts starts to occur."

I remember one more interview, when it was talked about (Holloway having more problems with accepting David than others have), but I can't remember which interview it was.

From Svanya's link above (fascinating read, btw):
"Those androids designed for close social interaction with humans are able to eat and drink, though they gain no nutrients from anything they consume. Food and drink is broken down in an artificial stomach cavity, and the resulting liquid is expelled via a retractable catheter."
Retractable catheter? I wonder if they are capable of sex using a retractable catheter?

I also wonder if a facehugger can infact impregnate an android or synthetic lifeform. wouldnt it need nourishment to develope?

Not only does he appear to breathe, he weeps as well, most disturbingly when he claims to merely understand emotions, not experience them himself. I'm not sure what to make of the attention he gives to painting the female model....if this were a human male, after listening to his list of "specs", I might be tempted to label this particular behavior as passive aggressive...he can't seem to keep from a lot of attention to that female figurine's head.
Sounds as if he's channeling HAL9000 also.

HE'S GAY!
not that there's anything wrong with that.
BONUS ANSWER TO ANOTHER "MUTHER"

NOT A CHANE IMO, NEEDS TO BE AN ORGANIC LIFE FORM FOR IT TO WORK.

Bishop, slept but didn't eat. still had a milky substance for blood. In my opinion the most human so far... haven't seem David in action, but he seems already very robotic

The answer is: of course David breathes. Do you think Micheal Fassbender could hold his breath for the duration of every shot for the movie? even while he's delivering lines?
May 07, 2012
Well, David does get a shot of milky liquid, at which point he flexes. I guess he's in the Ash/Bishop in some way.
