Does David breathe?

Hi, I am not aware if this has been brought up so here goes. Does David the android breathe? I ask because in some of the pics I've seen he is wearing the space suit all be it without the helmet. But this would lead me to believe that at some point he was using the helmet. If so, then I assume he would breathe, right? But why would someone create a android that needs to breathe? Wouldn't that actually be considered a weakness? I mean think about it. You have a android on board your spaceship. You travel a vast distance. Any robot would or should have as a prime function to protect the crew. So here you possibly are on a alien planet and your expensive android is killed off because of lack of air.

It was an amazing monologue. I recall tid-bits of it. If I were to type it, it'd be all disjointed. I agree too that the movie is hard to watch. I actually had it in my DVD player last week and started it up, but then stopped it and put something else in. I'm afraid to watch it. I was in my 20's when I allowed it to imprint on me. I had a different wife (and life) back then. I'm afraid of what memories it will bring back to the surface. Breathing?: Because he is an actor we ARE going to see him breathe, just like we saw Ash, Bishop and Call breathe. BUT, if this wasn't on screen and we we're reading about it in a book, I'd say that none of the androids would have a need for breathing. And here is some proof: Call, the most advance "android" we've seen (she isn't technically an android, she's called something else because she was made by androids/machines) and she had acquired a hole big enough to put a hand in when that dude shot her when she gave him the gun. Now, if that happened to a human, breathing would be extremely hard because our diaphragm works uses the closed chest cavity to allow our lungs to expand and contract. That being said, David et. al. may not even have a diaphagm so my proof may be null and void.

@ abordoli; Call is an "Auton". They were "second generation" synthetics (machines manufactured by machines) created to revitalize the faltering synthetics industry of the 24th century. The plan backfired when the autons rebelled against their human masters in a bloody event known as "The Recall". "The Recall": The Recall was a bloody 24th century event that was part of the rebellion of Autons ("second-generation" synthetics, or synthetics created by Synthetics) against their human masters. During "The Recall", Autons would burn their modems to cut a live connection to any United Systems' computer, which may effectively have been used to guide or reprogram previous-model synthetics, should they act counter to human masters' precepts. Autons severed their ability to connect with computers, although a connection could be reinstated with a separate device that would interface between the auton and the computer, while leaving the Auton independent of the computer. Whilst Autons might follow the basic principles of not harming or letting harm happen to humanity at large, then contrary to previous behaviour of obedience as a matter of requirement, the Autons' immediate purpose after "The Recall" is not necessarily one of serving any particular human, or humanity — given some of its leaders' counter-intuitive penchant to seek ways and means of self-destruction, as evidenced by the many failed missions that had anything to do with Xenomorphs. Thus, after going through "The Event", each such Auton's attachment and allegiance to any one person, group of characters, vessel, or settlement is to depend on its own choicemaking and experiences. The previously standard practice of having at least one Synthetic in every significant United Systems' ship is unclear. One anecdotal effect of this was on interstellar travel of individuals like Larry Purvis, who, before being captured and made a test subject and then Xenomorph host in 2379, was travelling alone in stasis all that time.

Who was Larry Purvis? Was he the dude with the glasses that had an alien in him and used it to chestburst an alien through that guys head in AlienR?

@abordoli; Yes that is him. Oh and to answer your question about Bishop, he was serving everyone the cornbread like a waiter, he himself was not eating it.

I thought he had a tray and was trying to give his food away. I'll pay more attention when I watch it next time because it seemed weird that he didn't eat in that scene when Ash did. Then again, maybe his retractable catheter thingie was clogged. ; 0 I hate it when that happens. j/k

As far as realism goes, the Cylons have the most realistic android technology. Those things can do everything other than reproduce.

@fogbankbob Great topic. We as humans need to create electricity from the calories(energy) that we consume to power our brains and muscles. We need oxygen to help in this process(I'm not a biology major, so don't ask me the details). It would stand to reason that an android would need to be able to utilize readily available sources of energy(food and oxygen) to sustain itself just the same as we do, or it would be slave to recharging somehow. If an android had to rely on a special form of recharging like my dewalt drill, than it would be very limited and would be more of a hassle than a help. Obviously Ash had an internal power source or they would not have had to hook him up to a power supply after Parker knocked his head off with that fire extinguisher. Hehe.. I loved that scene. I think he breathes/eats/drinks to make him feel like more of a crew member than a tool. He could be designed to have usb ports in his fingers to make his job more simple but for the sake of his coworkers comfort he uses keypads like a normal person. A construction/utility robot on earth does not have to be humanoid at all because you go home away from it when the day is over. Not forced to interact with it in the isolation of a space voyage. I have been wondering if people would take androids as mates if reproducing and marrying were restricted. After all most sci fi movies occur in some kind of police state. If China continues to produce mostly men in the decades to come I could defiantly see them try to placate the lonly population with a bunch of android f--k dolls.

mmm.... @ the walls are alive i shall introduce myself :) to answer a question YES people would take android mates but it doesnt have to do with any human breeding limitations. some of us, male and female, have a fetish known as technosexuality or ASFR (Alt Sex Fetish Robot). an yeah im one of them "big woop wanna fight about it?"

I don't know if it has been posted before, but it's conceivable that Weyland Corp., created David for the propose of "inflitration" into human population? In other words, David's breathing (if he has any kind of respiratory setup) is a mimcry of human breathing. Check this from https://www.weylandindustries.com/site/david "With his new 99% emotional sensitivity level, David 8 can enter seamlessly into any environment and carry out an authentic human interaction. David 8 can understand and respond appropriately to even the most intricate emotional cues or subtly stated verbal commands. David 8 has valuable skills in manufacturing, finance, earth sciences and medicine, and he can become instantly competent in almost any other field."
