Was viral campaign created to save the movie from being a major flop?

I remember in 1979 when I went to see Alien; a booklet was sold at the box office about the movie's production and it was awesome. I miss the 70s lol.

Lol the movie wouldn't have been a flop in the first place. It was an expansion on the Universe Scott created by Scott. I personally thought the film was well rounded. Any cliche they added was not over the top or even Cringe worthy for that matter. As any film, the movie was flawed, but it was simply good. Wasn't even meant to be a block-buster and everyone thought it was going to be the Prequel they wanted even though Ridley Scott made it very clear it WAS NOT A PREQUEL. So, for that matter, if you didn't like the film because it is exactly what Scott said it was, then I really pity those of you who feel that way.

Well, when BEATLES came out, the "older" people shouted "WHATS THAT?".
Now the Beatles are "classic" but not really intesting, one band of many that are leaved behind in history.. nobody would TODAY say "WHATS THAT?".
So maybe we simply get OLD!
You feel that you get OLD when you DONT UndERSTAND YOUTH ANY More.
This process started in my case maybe 5 years ago.
I simply dont understand lot of the new stuff that youth likes, and to me it is such a crap and pure marketing and tv visibility makes this crap to be bought by young dumb people.
But maybe once WE were the dumb, but we did not know that we are.

Anyway, i also miss lots of things.
There are no real heros today.
Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone etc - older and older.
What follows in action movies`?
VIN DIESEL? What a suck..
Or all these "good looking no name" actors like in "I AM DUMB NUMBER 4" or "DUMB JUMPER" or "TWILIGHT DUMB" or "DUMB TRUNSFORMER TO DUMBER".
But there are some LIGHTS at the end of the tunnel.
Can not wait to see the first full length Sci-Fi movie of GRANDMASTER
CHRIS -HOLYGOD- CUNNINGHAM!

I think the virals were used to add depth to the story as well as marketing. Being the nerd-boy that I am, I watched all the virals and went to Weyland Industries website. After watching the movie I was glad I did. I think they know this is a movie that asks more questions than it answers and they are going to use marketing virals, websites and movies/sequels to sell us the answers.

So u think without the Prometheus internet stucka the movie would have flopped out, or that it didnt because of it? Interessting :)
IMHO we could have been spared for all the overanticipating. U know what they say about great expectations :D On the other side the movie has given me a six months experience, instead of a two hour one :) ,not sure if thats what i wanted though.
Most of the viral is crap though (except for Pearce's TED performance), and totally unessesary to make a good movie. U never needed the net to make a great movie before and i'm kinda sad they tried it with this film.
As for advertising the "eight passenger" had a super movie poster :D The one with the cracking egg and the net beneath it. That was surely enough to set the tone for unaware movie goers.
Anyway I think the movie was mostly great, some thin carachter build up and acting.

I thought the internet campaign ahead of the movie was a great idea. Problem was it only got attention from avid fans like us. Most of my friends & colleagues didnt know of Prometheus until adverts started to appear on the TV two weeks ago. So it failed as did the movie for me. I would describe the move as 'commercial'. In this I mean what probably set out as a brilliant idea was dumped down by the sponsor in order to guarantee a buck return. There are so many holes in the movie and so many of the characters were unconvincing I wouldnt no where to start. The worst is that if this is not a success which I bet it wont be then there will be little interest in a sequel or it will go the way of
APV and degenerate into nonsense.
