If I can find it I'll post up my Alien life cycle chart that covered the life cycle of the Alien to incorporate the Brett/Egg transformation, the Alien Queen and the super facehugger of Alien 3. This was going to form the basis of my next article for Aliens magazine before it folded. Dave Hughes (editor at the time) and Lee Brimmicombe Wood were the only other people to see it. While it doesn't answer what came first, it does try to incorporate the seemingly disparate stages of the Alien lifecycle. Apologies as it's mapped out on paper. The final concept would have involved stills pulled from the films. I may get round to doing that one day...

@RHunter: i like to think that most of us on here haven't really mentioned Idris
as much, due to the fact he isn't as prominent a character as say Vickers or Shaw.
in spite of that, i was delighted to read that Idris was participating in PROMETHEUS
i think he's a great actor,
i just wish he'd have been cast as the next James Bond,
i think he above all else would make a SUPERB "007"
in any case, i hope the role he's got as Captain of the ship isn't as
brief as i suspect it is, i think he ends up being killed off in this film
still, i can't wait to see him captain and fly the ISRV PROMETHEUS vessel!

Don't worry Sparky, I will change the question. That question was way too specific in regards to its answer. So here is my replacement question...
Which director links the Alien and Predator franchises, and how?
ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumPrometheus Movie Trivia Game!Dec 27, 2011
Thanks Snorklebottom for the update!!!
The answer has to be James Cameron
He directed Aliens, we all know that, but his contribution to the PREDATOR franchise is so small yet so HUGE in the scheme of things. ON a flight to Japan with Stan Winston who had been hired to do DESIGN the original predator...Cameron told him "I always wanted to see something with mandibles", the rest is history, Stan Winston put them in, and today, that creature would not be known as "The Predator" we see had not been for Cameron's suggestion to Winston.

ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumPrometheus Movie Trivia Game!Dec 27, 2011
The Narcissus is correct for 1 point.
What I want for parts 2 and 3 is who thought of the idea of using that name for the escape ship in "Alien" and where did she/he get it from ?
ReplyTattooedkoiPrometheus ForumPrometheus Movie Trivia Game!Dec 27, 2011
The name of the shuttle comes from Joseph Conrad's "The Nigger of the Narcissus". From what I can tell it was a collaboration between O'Bannon, Foss and Cobb to come up with the name.

Ok, Snorky got the first Point, and Tattooedkoi just got the 2nd point on the questions 3rd part, but the 2nd part of it all remains unanswered, who was it that said "we're using that name in the film"?...and there is still a point up for grabs along with The Con.

The truth…and nothing but the truth…so help me…WHAT?
For myself, I’m only interested in trying to make sure that whatever I learn and believe in…is in fact the truth. Whatever the subject, no matter how easy or difficult the information may be to accept or embrace, my endeavor is to seek out the actual truth…regardless of my personal comfort level or preconceived notions. This approach to life can be difficult and frustrating. However, this path is also often very peaceful, honest, and with less regret.
So, how can I know the truth? Well, in my opinion, our society has been either lulled, seduced, atrophied or whatever…into a state of dangerous relativism. Nothing is really absolute for our current culture. Nothing is objective. Everything seems to be subjective… “How do you feel or think about said issue?” Fact is…there ARE absolutes. Like in physics, there is gravity…whether one likes it or not. A person could become dissatisfied with their own finitude and earthly limitations, and decide to jump out of the window of a 50 story building, in order to defy gravity and the laws of physics. Before long, the jumper would realize that he is not going to break the laws of physics…the laws are going to break him.
An almighty God either exists, or it does not. If it does not…I hope to find or hear a compelling argument to convince me of that fact in my lifetime. Conversely, if a God does exist, I hope to find or experience convincing proof, arguments, and answers to satiate my personal profound (at least to me) questions regarding this issue.
I’m not a very religious person, but I do find myself to be a spiritual person. Based on my personal research in world religions, science, and multicultural studies…I’ve come to believe that there IS an almighty God, who is the creator of all things. A large part of this belief and its formation grew out of the concept of “The Uncaused Caused” or “Prime Mover” concept included in Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica text…which I posted earlier in this same thread. This concept was also discussed and espoused by Aristotle "The Philosopher."
I can’t get around the logic of that document. It makes absolute and complete sense to me. Going back to a “Big Bang” origin concept…which I’m sure occurred…How do you get something from nothingness? What or who touched off the big bang? So for me, it all starts there. The being, entity, force, event…or whatever it was…is what I call God. After that, for me it’s a matter of trying to acquire further knowledge of this God, and trying to forge a relationship with it…if possible.

Perhaps humility is a universal law such as gravity? Either way at the end of time, all the souls will be screaming in unity at the rapture of the great singularity of a blackhole! Good and evil exist and are not equals. Each to their own destiny! The will to search and will to decide is a valued gift and it's freedom equaled to the amount of space above our heads.
ReplyNeurionPrometheus ForumReligion versus evelution and then their is PrometheusDec 27, 2011
In my humble opinion, good and evil…right and wrong, and freedoms only exist if there is an almighty God to serve as a benchmark or a criterion. Without that yardstick…all moral bets are off…right? I mean…how can a people have morals or mores without a common set of standards? Without a god…the “law of the jungle” prevails…correct? No god…natural selection is the only law…yes…no? Animals for instance…in my opinion, are not moral agents, they are neither innocent or guilty…they simply are. They can be the explanation for a killing…but are not guilty of murder. See what I mean? Why are we rational beings…while animals are not? Without God, no Heaven or Hell…no reward or punishment…what would be the moral impetus for a person to exercise charity or good will toward others. Why would a person exercise any restraint while attempting to reach his goals, except out of fear of a temporal punishment, such as imprisonment or death…by his society?

Right on! Brother Neurion;
Regardless of what society, race, religion, or language...the children of Adam have with in them the knowledge of that which was bestowed upon the first human...and a well defined moral compass. We all inherently know not to steal and murder but still need someone to tell us not do those things. Some will say it is bad to chop off someones hand for stealing out of greed but it the old west horse thieves were hung on the spot cause one would certainly die in the desert without a horse. Civilized societies can vary the interpret of punishments for the wicked but without civilization it's the law of the land. Ultimately bad deeds are the result of inward falicies such as greed, envy, lust, pride and selfishness.

I for one, without question- believe in God. That does not make me a right-wing, Bible thumping, hypocrite. That image is what the media combined with ignorance has created. And yes, the ignorance is most often demonstrated by those claiming to be religious people in the first place. There is a tremendous difference in belief and religion. All too often, religion is little more than an exclusive club. Their way, or you are bound for hell- according to them.
I also don't believe the Bible is fiction or fantasy. I think it is often misunderstood by those not willing to read it with an open mind, which means both those reading it for the first time, as well as those who claim to have read it many times. Are there some ideas that seem outdated? Well of course there are, as it was written thousands of years ago, by human beings who lived thousands of years ago.
Belief is about faith, pure and simple. I have no one here to answer to or prove my beliefs to. At the same time, I do not bash others for their beliefs. Many people say there is no proof of God or creation, but willingly cling to the possibility of aliens and other civilizations- life on other planets, without the first shred of proof. Only educated guesses about what may or could be. Do I believe that we are alone? I hope not, because it seems like an awful waste of space.
The "Prometheus" concepts discussed here are intriguing, and quite simply fun to imagine and debate. Science fiction is exactly that- fun and exciting ways to imagine what could be, now or in the future. Does science fiction often preclude science fact? Of course it does, because of the human ability to design and build whatever they can imagine. But make no mistake, as much as I enjoy looking forward to a great and original story and film with outstanding special effects, I won't leave the theater questioning my beliefs. I will leave the theater hopefully feeling that I had an enjoyable experience, and perhaps have another Blu-ray to add to my wish list.

And of course there is the rape killing of Ripley by Ash... SR suggested to Ian Holm on the morning of filming the scene where Ash attacks Ripley to turn it into a sexual attack. After Ian was keen to accept a sexual side to robots, they discussed the how. The girly magazine in her mouth was the outcome they came up with. Wonder why SR needed to add that element to the attack?
And then there is SR on the commentary tracks saying how he mused that the astronauts probably all had sex with each other (including gay/les) on the long flights. Of course he filmed only Ripley/Dallas but later cut out that scene and removed any other inference between the crew.
SR has comparatively little sexual content in his films, but it was a deep element in Alien.

This may have been pointed in an earlier post out as well but the facehugger is clearly a form of interspecies rape. Evidenced by the phallic tube that is forcibly thrust into Kane's mouth and the eventual birth of "Kane's son."
This is probably why the movie is so disturbing on a deeper level.

ReplyOzXPrometheus ForumPrometheus Temple UncoveredDec 27, 2011
Think Prometheus definitely visits the Temple.
To quote from Wikipedia/The Book of Alien:
"The origin of the jockey creature was not explored in the film, but Scott later theorized that it might have been the ship's pilot, and that the ship might have been a weapons carrier capable of dropping Alien eggs onto a planet so that the Aliens could use the local lifeforms as hosts. In early versions of the script the eggs were to be located in a separate pyramid structure which would be found later by the Nostromo crew and would contain statues and hieroglyphs depicting the Alien reproductive cycle, offering a contrast of the human, Alien, and space jockey cultures. Cobb, Foss, and Giger each created concept artwork for these sequences, but they were eventually discarded due to budgetary concerns and the need to trim the length of the film."
Think Prometheus will have many of these original ideas from RS. Can't wait.

will be interesting to know who is the "mohawk" guy that appear in the red lasers scene and in other two ( with Ridley and jumping from the truck ) since hes surely one of the crew . ( i think the research is restricted to Elliot , HArris , Robin and Steyn )

As for the figures:

That is definitely Shaw.
We've read in the Empire interview that she and Holloway are a couple (he's a strict scientist, and she's a religious believer).
My assumption is that:
He gets hit with the acid and gets infected,
They have Sex,
She gets impregnated with something rather nasty,
Stumbles into the room (pictured above),
Then gives birth.

1) Seems about only 10%, so far.
2) I predict both Vickers and David are good characters.
3) Nothing has disappointed me so far...(from the official movie). But I have been disappointed in the leaked/fake scripts because they are terrible...especially the one with the "Star Beast" and 'wormholes'. I'm also disappointed at how much hate and confusion the trailer is getting over at YouTube.
4) Many things can destroy the film for me.
i/ Bad acting. Boring story and plot....including unsatisfying ending or 1 dimensional characters. And if it turns out they go back in time to prehistoric earth.
ii/ CGI monsters.
iii/ Anything that the film-makers promised but isn't actually true. (E.g: If the film turned out to NOT be epic.)
iv/ Overuse of music, or the film having bad music. Sir Ridley has overused music before in Black Hawk Down. (Black Hawk Down literally had music every second of the film)
5) I don't know anything about the controversial homosexual/lesbian protagonist problem.
ReplyPredatordreadsPrometheus ForumPrometheus 2nd POLLDec 27, 2011
1)I think about 75%
2) Vickers totally Evil, she's the suit. David I think may end up becoming human and turn into the martyr.
3)I guess if I am going to be disappointed in this film it will be that Hot Toys may only be the one company that will make a toy line for this movie because they are SO expensive. I'll be pretty upset if Mc Farlane ends up doing a figure line for this too just because you pretty limited to the poses you can do. I mean come on there all dolls of UFC fighters! I am ok with the idea of the Value sized Uncle Fester being the antagonist in this movie. Ridley did say that the Space Jockey is a suit.
4)If Prometheus turns into a total predictable joke of a movie like Avatar or Independence Day and the rapper Common, Ludacris or Justin Timberlake makes a cameo I will be pretty bummed!
5)If it happens in this movie so be it. But if it does I bet it would be something very subtle.

Wow you guys sure are putting a lot of faith into Gigers participation here. Scott has said a few times that his (Giger) work on this film was really limited....stating the only stuff he worked on was some murals. I guess we will see. I'll be honest. The only work I see in the trailer is the Chair room and even that has less of a Giger look about it than the original.
ReplyJuxtaposePrometheus ForumPrometheus 2nd POLLDec 27, 2011
1. He did the original alien and a lot of his work is just being rehashed for prometheus...which is fine ...everything is still based on what he did originally...so the main concept is still his.
2.Vickers start of evil and then she shows a more human side towards the 3rd act....she does something heroic...but perhaps dies a s a result?
David is evil as well...he steels the technology from the engineers...(speculation!)
3.The bald dude next to the jockey chair...he looks like the bouncer at the local club.
4.No creatures that even borrow from the original alien design and concept. A confusing plot that jumps back and forth with the aid of time travel.
5.Being a gay man I would really not mind...but I certainly don't see it happening in Prometheus...i believe the jockeys will force 2 heterosexual men together...as part of their experiments....(cause I read something like that somewhere).... As for the main protagonist being gay....not in any big budget box office type of movies....but i am sure u will find it in more arty type of movies....or foreign films.
ReplyMentosPrometheus ForumPrometheus 2nd POLLDec 27, 2011
1.) Sadly not enough. My assumption is they will be replicating Giger's from the original and nothing more.
2.) Vickers - bad probably. David - conflicted after some urn related tampering.
3.) I have to be honest and say the supposed Space Jockey figure.
4.) CGI creatures, bad creature design, bad dialogue, lack of Giger-ness.
EDIT: and Lighting! I remember in the Comic-con stills everything looked really grainy and dark (although that may have just been the quality of the cam clips) but things look a lot brighter in Prometheus. Lighting played a massive part in A L I E N 's realism, and I'm not saying Prometheus needs to echo it; it is a different film, but I really like the dark gritty look.
5.) I'm not sure I understand, which actor/character is Gay in Prometheus?

1. Giger is getting on a bit now, but from the ampule room, the silhouette of the temple and the Derelict itself it looks as though representations of Gigers work have been used throughout to represent "otherworldy" elements of the story, much like in Alien.
2. Vickers seems like a "by-the-book" company employee, whom probably barks orders and supervises things from afar, until it all goes wrong then IMO she shows her humanity and sacrifices her pension and company standing to do the right thing.
David seems almost childlike in his representation, seeing all around him with awe and wonder. As to whether this is a ruse to him being a "guarantee" that the company will get what it wants or not remains to be seen.
3. The conflicting representation of the Space Jockeys. On one hand we have the "Tall Humans", and on the other hand we have the Space Jockey skull being scanned by the crew. IMO the Space Jockeys are alien creatures, but I am confused as to who or what the tall human is.
4. A predictable and unoriginal story masquerading as an "epic" tale. I truly hope that the story has the scope that Ridley claims.
5. A gay/lesbian main character in either an antagonist or protagonist role. Outside of Alien/Prometheus this is already a reality - Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood. In regards to Prometheus it is a likely possibility, becasue in the DVD commentary for Alien Ridley talks about the possibility of a deep space crew being uni-casual-sexual.
