You know, if that is inside the derelict... and the derilict is supposedly a living, organic kind of being/ship..... I'm not real sure I'd go anywhere near that hole.

The hole looks like a wound or an orifice, because there's not a sharp rim at the top, rather the rock flows into the hole and downward. Or, in another way, the rock is being sucked down there. (I'm thinking of that Giger painting of the derelict where the rocks around the ship look like they're recoiling away from the ship.) It seems like the hole has been created unnaturally (acid?). Maybe the hole isn't very deep (or at least terminates without leading to another room), and something is grown or incubated in it. If the hole is a tunnel to somewhere else, I imagine some sort of creature passing through the hole, and if you look at the following picture, it'd be massive. You could plunk 4 or 5 of the crew in the photo through the hole side by side. I see a lot of gouges in the floor/ground leading from the side of the hill/walls. I think the hole might have been dug for drainage purposes. Don't want the ampule room to get flooded and have the ampules floating away!

I don't think it's an excavation site on Earth, otherwise, why are the crew members wearing space suits with helmets? I think it's a drain to keep rain water and runoff from flooding the Big Head/Ampule room.

I have a suspicion that the temple may have actually been built on top of the derelict by an ancient race, it would explain why no such temple was found by the colonists in Aliens, The Derelict destroyed it upon taking off... Crew enter temple, find a hole, tunnels lead to the ampule room which them leads to the innards of the Derelict. the deeper they go the more advanced things get.

I'm not so sure about that now. Unless the Derelict is never discovered by the crew, and instead is sent from another planet by the Engineers to stop the humans from discovering something on the planet they do venture to. -- That scene where the Derelcit crashes at the end of the trailer.(we think it hits the PROMETHEUS, stranding VIckers and Shaw) So you think the tunnels are part of the temple and lead deep under ground to the ampule room and map rooms instead of being part of the derelict ship?

I think that hole leads from the temple (which we can see in the shot) down to the tunnels that then lead to the Ampule room with big giant head.

in the second pic down of the second entrance,there appears to be a xeno/protrusion like part in the centrebut hard to be sure as light/shadow is naking it hard to see clearly!?! or i could just be inagining it..... lol

@GreatBoosUp, I think people have a problem with the accusatory tone you took when you replied to 20thcenturybuick, and the fact that the idea you were "attacking" as being speculation is real and present in the trailers. All 20thcenturybuick did was "litter" the forum with a quality thread that got people talking.
