MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:20 AMA reccuring theme in Sci-fi is to have an onboard control computer, sometimes with a voice.
As we all know it was 'Muther' or MU-TH-ER or Mother (if you want) on the Nostromo.
But will the far more advanced Prometheus have one??

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:23 AMNot sure, but I would think the existence of an android would definitely make this possible in that world.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:24 AMmaybe GRAN-D-MU-TH-ER ... a very old computer ..always sick ...

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:47 AMI've wondered that, too, mainly because of when Shaw says, "Prometheus, are you seeing this?" when she sees the big head. I'm not sure if she's talking to the crew back on board the ship, or the ship itself.

Shes talking to the Crew, multiple people are listening to her so they use the term "Prometheus" to confirm shes talking to the people who are monitoring her on the ship.
In Alien the ship had an on board computer called "Mother" because the whole theme of Alien was the perversion of birth.
They refer to the ship as "Mother", they leave on a smaller ship attached to an "Umbilical" The background noise in the ship is sounds recorded from pregnant women.
The Prometheus probably has no system because it does not tie in to the theme of the movie

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:53 AMI would so like it be Siggy Weaver's voice.
She was great in Wall-E.
mmmmm... Im suddenly in the mood for a "Cupcake... IN A CUP! "

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 10:25 AMThis seems a strange question.
It might appear a little odd to us that AI wouldn't have developed to that degree by the very late 21st Century - because there can be little doubt, that it actually will.
Plus, I'd suggest there are just too many dramatic advantages to ignore - not least the fact any items of interest that the computer may communicate to the crew, the characters of the crew don't then necessarily have to speak into the air or discuss amongst each other, for the benefit of the audience; nor do we necessarily have to have a shot of some computer screen telling them whatever that news is.
Finally, they can create a synthetic human, that is indistinguishable from an actual human, but they don't have a Shipboard computer that communicates in common language?
I'd say we should take it for granted.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 10:29 AMNo muther in "Prometheus." I have an inside scoop that they went with a bruther model, the E-bonics 8999.

MemberFacehuggerApr-15-2012 10:31 AMI think many main sounds and computers will be aboard the Prometheus. If you play the Verizon mini game that just dropped, it has all the sound effects of the nostromo. I love it, as it was pure nostalgia playing the mini game.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 11:25 AMCreepy thing about that is David has been awake for the five years the ship has been in flight. That's a lot of time to tinker with a command operating system. I know we trust our lives every day with automated systems, but this particular universe has shown a very dark side to accepting that all is well.

One big problem with AI and robots (to me), is how will we keep them from harming us? Asimov's robotic laws state that:
-A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
-A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
-A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
But they are not infallible as you might have heard...

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 12:40 PMThat's the Ship's Computer I think she is addressing, I think it {The Film} most definitely does NOT have a "Fazure" or "Muzure" {spoken Like "Dr. Evil"} but most definitely does Have It's own personality. I think the On Board Computer's name is the same as the Ship. That said it could turn out you are right and she is rather addressing the rest of the crew. In other words I have nothing of value to add and "prolly" never should have posted this. lol...sorry...

This confused me.
You're concerned about harm from AI/robots - but then you list Asimov's Laws - the exact reason why you shouldn't be worried?
What are you saying is not infallible? The Laws, or Robots - because those Laws are a perfect logic loop?
Anything that is actually following those Laws cannot harm you of it's own volition, unless it's broken - but things breaking, that's Life.
I'm not sure if the possibility of an AI or Robot breaking and then going on a rampage is particularly more threatening, scary, or any more likely to actually happen as a probability of chance than, say, the brakes failing on the car you're in; or the train you're riding in coming off the rails; or having an asteroid land directly on your head?...
Relax.

Not sure if this is the case, these laws were no guarantee as I remember, Asimov takes a look at these in some of his Robot stories, it's been a while though. I'll have to look at my old books, but I don't believe they involved mechanical malfunctions, so in most instances they were problems of logic basically.
-Not sure why I should relax, as I am as cool as cucumber ;)

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:47 PMClarke and Kubrick theoretically answered the "infallibility" of Asimov's laws in "2001" with robot psychosis.

Yeah that could be one, but not sure exactly if HAL operated under these rules though. Anybody remember if this was the case?
I remember the theme is revisited in 2010 as part of an analysis of why the AI did what it did...

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:55 PMHe clearly operated under his own rules from the day he became self aware...was an accident of design, waiting to happen, as demonstrated over and over in the film very very slowly with subtle reveals such as, just as an example, near the end, his revealing that he was reading lips.

artyoh
MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 9:58 PMI think the point is, you cannot utterly control any self-aware being. A person's thoughts, are their own. Psychosis is part-and-parcel of an individual's internal life and self-reflection. Those attributes are a requirement for any self-aware, individual identity, so it's a catch-22.......theoretically, of course.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 10:05 PMLove the scene in A.I. when Professor Hobby asked his secratary Sheila, an android woman in his classroom to define LOVE...and she said...
Secretary: Love is first widening my eyes a little bit and quickening my breathing a little and warming my skin and touching…
Professor Hobby: …and so on. Exactly so. Thank you, Sheila.
and also when Professor Hobby says right near the end of the film...
Professor Hobby: "The greatest single human gift - the ability to chase down our dreams."

THough I think that the time is closer to 2+ years of travel I think this poster has point.
You take a motivated Robot/Weyland and give them total access to all crew members, the ships computer systems and time to manipulate anything that the robotic thought processes van imagine and you got a hell of story,
Why trust anything displayed, any technical breakdowns. Heck Davids could, be the Director of everything that the crew exp[eriences and we see on the sceen.
That even sounds too far fetched to me,,but the opportunity is there to manipulate what the crew sees, thinks, communicates and even understands
I think there was poster that commented that the Weyland Company was used at the film's end to show ownership fo this movie.
Yes, That it. Prometheus is a production of the Weyland Corporation to keep earthings like us busy thinking about things in a diversionary way, The 'Truth' is that we are all being manipulated but can't se the person behind the curtian because we are too busy thinking.
Ir;a all good because I am enjoying the ride.
