Do you want the Engineer to speak?

MemberOvomorphMay 15, 20122430 Views31 RepliesIt strikes me that if the Engineer were to speak in the film that it might dramatically change our (humans’) relationship to him. David is clearly reading at several points in the film. Presumably he’s reading the orthography of a spoken language. Do you personally want the Engineer to speak or not speak and why?

I'd love to hear them bust out with some Cockney.
"Hmm hmm hmm-hmm hmm, hm - 'ang on, wot's this?" (picks up Shaw)
"Blimey! Oi...Bert! Tom! Come 'ave a look at this 'ere..."

They better shut up, and if they try to talk...

Gosh I hope David doesn't turn into C3P0 and be fluent in alien languages. And that Weyland language tool better not be a Star Trek inspired Universal Tranlator. That's just taking the easy way out of getting around alien communication problems. But at least its not like the Stargate SG1 series where all aliens in the universe are fluent in English.
In regards to Engineers speaking, I prefer them not to speak but if they do then it should sound very alien and menacing. Watching an engineer speak English would look weird IMO.

He might have taken the "Rosetta" stone series and speak anything....but I am hoping he just grunts and torments the crew...seriously, he might use mind tricks as most aliens have that ability...

Hmmm Difficult question, but I personally prefer some kind of diferent communication (not telepathic) I do not know perhaps through sounds and images...but it is hard to imagine the Engineer speaking. Also in what language? Sumerian ¿?
May 15, 2012
They will probably be telepathic. This is probably the simplest way to get around communication problems in this movie.

Not if he's going to say, "klaatu nikto barada" or something.
I suppose he could. I assume David has the Broca Dialectical Implant
Weyland Industries introduces revolutionary, game-changing language tool. It is the first ever to require no actual learning on the consumer’s behalf.
Maybe Shaw has it also.

David is supposed to have the ability to understand "any language" based on some Weyland technology. The crew is also paying a lot of attention to Sumerian, at least cuneiform. Notice the Language Frequency analysis in the data cube. (Viewer's lower left. Click image to enlarge.)

There is also a pedigreed linguist appearing in the film as a character, a "teacher."

Dont know where Ridley will go with this one....
Would the Engineer understand us?
I am sure David somehow maybe comunicates with them.... but maybe only as far as interface with their computer... i am not sure no Engineer comes up to him to be best buddies like the suposes screeing review claims... i prefer the "oh what you doing here playing with all me S%£$" "leave it alone or ill rip ya head off"
Only would they understand him lol...
I mean we did here the Space Jockey speak in the Warning in the deleted Alien scene....

If they are smart enough to create life, well i think they could speak english if they wanted to but maybe just a really fucking scary and alien like voice if they do say anything.
May 15, 2012
The answer would be hell no, unless they sound dark and menacing

@W2rh0und,
Telepathy would seem like a cop out to me, they would have to come up with some cheesy way for us in the audience to "hear" that too.
May 15, 2012
He looks very "Frankenstein’s Monster" to me. That monster does not speak, but not being able to speak is not consistent with the writing all over the temple and cryo-cophagi.
May 15, 2012
I thought it would be Telepathy.... which may not work with David and thus make the Engineer think..... "hang on what do we have here" then find out we are not creating lifeforms and that may then not sit well with the Engineer....
Well seems the one person on Twitter who saw the movie claims thats what happens and thus the Engineer takes a interest in David and Shows him all the stuff and Holograms.....
We shall see.

@BigDave,
I think the only way that they would understand English is if they had been doing a lot of monitoring of Earth in the last 500 years. Before that, English as we know it didn't really exist.
In this fiction that David can "Google Translate" any language, I feel it is much more likely that he would be able to talk to them, than they would be able to understand and/or speak English.
May 15, 2012
As long as they don't say things like "eBay" and "my bad".
If they HAD to speak, I'd feel fine if they sounded like Gravemind.
If that's the case, they could explain it away by saying that the Engineers taught us language or that they can read our minds and learn English that way.
May 15, 2012
If anything they would probably speak Chinese as China has the largest population so in a way it would make sense to speak the language of the country with the largest population. Then there is India.
But in regards to international languages you also have French and Portugese.

Well there's 3 possibilities imo
1: They don't speak to David/the crew at all
2: They can telepathically communicate with us, but that doesn't work to well for us in the audience
3: They know English and just speak really strangely in a very weird sort of accent. Or David can translate what they say with some tech maybe
