Scott's story concept was partially inspired by the work of "Chariots of the Gods?" author Erich von Däniken's writings about the theory of ancient astronauts, suggesting that life on Earth was created by aliens. Lindelof and Scott have said this.
If you read a bit about it, it is all about ancient astronaut interpretations of old religious text. They also hint in the online materials at Genesis.
Authors Chuck Missler, Erich von Däniken's and Mark Eastman all offer interpretations of different religions and particularly christianity. Read the book of Genesis section from the Ancient Astronaut page of Wikipedia. Tell me thats not the same movie you watched.
The Book of Genesis, chapter 6 verses 1–4, states:
When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
...
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them.
— Genesis 6:1–4 (New International Version)
One interpretation is that the Nephilim are the children of the "sons of God" and "daughters of humans", although scholars are uncertain.[32] The King James Version replaces the term "Nephilim" with "giants".
The first part of the apocryphal Book of Enoch expands and interprets Genesis 6:1. It explains that the "sons of God" were a group of 200 "angels" called "Watchers". Against God's wishes, these Watchers descended to Earth to breed with humans. Their offspring are the Nephilim, "giants" who "consumed all the acquisitions of men". When humans could no longer sustain the Nephilim, they turned against humanity. The Watchers also instructed humans in metallurgy and metalworking, cosmetics, sorcery, astrology, astronomy and meteorology. God then ordered the Watchers to be imprisoned in the ground. He created the Great Flood to rid Earth of the Nephilim and of the humans who had been given knowledge by the Watchers. However, to ensure humanity's survival, Noah is forewarned of the oncoming destruction. Because they disobeyed God, the book also describes the Watchers as "fallen angels".[33]
Some ancient astronaut theorists believe that this story is a historical account of extraterrestrials visiting Earth. In their interpretation, the "angels" are extraterrestrials and were called Watchers because their mission was to observe humanity. Some of the extraterrestrials disobeyed orders; they made contact with humans, cross-bred with human females and shared knowledge with them. The Nephilim were thus half-human-half-extraterrestrial hybrids.[34]
Chuck Missler and Mark Eastman argue that modern UFOs carry the fallen angels, or offspring of fallen angels: the Nephilim of Genesis, who have now returned. They believe it was this interbreeding between the angels and humans that led to what they call "the gene pool problem." Noah was perfect in his "generations," that is "Noah's genealogy was not tarnished by the intrusion of fallen angels. It seems that this adulteration of the human gene pool was a major problem on the planet earth."[35]
Von Däniken also suggests that the two angels who visited Lot in Genesis 19 were not angels, but ancient astronauts. They may have used atomic weapons to destroy the city of Sodom. In any case, the otherworldly beings acted as if there was a time set for Sodom's destruction. Von Däniken questioned why God would work on a timetable and why an "infinitely good Father" would give "preference to 'favorite children,' such as Lot's family, over countless others."[36]
Marc Dem completely reinterprets Genesis by claiming humanity started on another planet and that the God of the Bible is an extraterrestrial.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 12:26 PMi refer you to my thoughts from an earlier thread;
"Much to my chagrin, I've seen interviews and discussions which state that Ridley Scott was influenced by the works of E.V.D.
Reviews also like to throw in Von Danniken.
My problem with this is - of all the researchers into the field of Ancients aliens/ancient mysteries, V.D. is the least credible ( just most popular ). I'd be sad if he was the first go-to person on this subject that Ridley Scott/Lindeloff/Spaith took notice of.
V.D.'s most famous works so far as l'm aware do in no way touch upon the directed panspermia-like origins of all life on Earth as the prologue of Prometheus suggests.
Prometheus' prologue and the film itself more closely touches upon the works of ( not only of course ), Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock in the book 'The Mars Mystery', where they hypothesised that an 'extra-terrestrial third party' may have travelled through our solar system and seeded life on certain planets including our own, and may have created us in their image.
The illustrations which accompanied their discussion ( in the live lectures I attended, and also shown on an episode of Paul MacKenna's TV series discussing the Mars Mystery book ), curiously enough depicted 9 - 12 foot humanoids, eerily reminiscient of the Engineers."

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 1:26 PMYes, I agree with you @TSMD. Mr. Erich Von Danikens book the Chariots of the gods, has a lot of similarities with Prometheus. It is an amazing book. I believe much of what is written inside of it. And it's not sad Prometheum man. All ideas which sooner or later become fact at the beginning are mocked and laughed at, including those who bring up the ideas. Today's knowledge of the past is minuscule. Your going to tell me that men built those pyramids in Egypt, without the help of the wheel. Or another problem is how could the kings be buried with there belongings including there servants. If torches which would be needed to enter the pyramids would turn off because of the lack of oxygen. No, no, there are just to many unexplained phases in the history of mankind. We had help in evolving.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 3:04 PM@rubirosa,
I appreciate your interest in the subject. I too have been immersed in this subject since I was 15 years old and was originally blown away by Danniken's ideas.
Some 25 years ( and countless books/documentaries/theses ) later, I just do not believe many of Danniken's ideas hold any water.
He is the least convincing of the well of studies/authors/researchers into the subject out there.
As I have stated, I truly believe high tech knowledge/science/medicine, etc. DID exist in mankind's past - which we cannot even recreate or exceed even today.
I just don't believe aliens were behind it.
It was humans. Societal development I'm convinced isn't linear but has had many peaks and troughs.
We have lost much of the knowledge and genius the ancients had.
As my favourite author Graham Hancock puts it: "We are a Species with Amnesia".
I think it's clumsy and insulting to attribute the magnificence of out forebears to 'aliens', just as it is to not believe these achievements exist in the first place.
