Prometheus Director's Commentary

After watching Prometheus on iTunes with DC turned on...I must say that Ridley's comments/insights were awesome. At one point during the commentary, Ridley mentions that all of the answers are there; there are clues everywhere throughout the film. He also mentioned that he hopes that people will dissect it now rather than write essays about it 35 years from now. Overall, a very good commentary. However, I do wish that he would have commented more on the deleted scenes and why they were removed...hopefully, that'll be on the blu-ray. I must say that Ridley's commentary has given me a whole new appreciation for the film. His comments also suggest that above all, he is still a visual filmmaker. He mentions that a lot of things were added to the film simply because they served the scene and that's it. It seems that every question that everyone has about the film (why did the Engineer do this or why did Fifield do that?) has a very simple answer: because Ridley Scott thought it looked cool. Granted, it may not serve everyone's understanding of the plot/story...but it's an answer I can support. That being said, I'm really looking forward to hearing Spaihts/Lindelof's commentary on the blu-ray...I'm curious to see how they feel about Ridley's visual enhancements that affected the story they were trying to tell...either to its benefit or its detriment.

To all " Ridley mentions that all of the answers are there" Lindelof siad the same thing a while back. The question for me is : Is it homages he refers to or actual clues in the film itself - what you actually see on screen in the theatrical release not including the cut scenes ? Or is he maybe refering to the eventual restoration cut ? My guess is hje is meaning that after viewing the film 20 times at blue ray resolution (maybe frame by frame ) some small but important things might emerge . Irregardles I love prometheus BUT I need to know that "who was the sj - what is its cargo - where was he going" is going to be explored . If that's the case then I am fine with prometheus as being an introduction to the rest of the series.

I can relate to the comment that he did some images because they were cool to the scene... That is what happened in Alien, with the Space Jockey set. It was put there for its cinematic value (the original scene in the book would be a barren one in a movie) and (probably by accident and because he used Giger's work) ended up creating a lot more than the original Monster/thriller movie it was clearly made to be.

Haha "dissecting it now" is what we've been doing for months! @Monk, does he give any clues in the commentary about anything? I doubt that we will recieve anything from Lindelofs commentary except for MORE questions!

The poster was good though!

there is no lindelof commentary on the digital download. has it been confirmed that we will get a commentary track from lindelof on the blu ray release? I really hope so. Im very interested in what lindelof has to say (even more so than scott). In addition to the statement that was released by fox a while back confirming a sequel in 2015, ridley pretty much states that we will definitely get a sequel to prometheus (and possibly a third film) at the end of his commentary track on the digital download.

Man all this is worrying me more and more to pick one bit out: "It seems that every question that everyone has about the film (why did the Engineer do this or why did Fifield do that?) has a very simple answer: because Ridley Scott thought it looked cool." My god if it really is about just that there is no hope for this franchise :O . Last time I looked at my 74 year old grandad he didnt know much about cool :D ...sorry to be ageist but its a sad fact of life we all go down that road...oh man this is disheartening I really hoped there was a deep and complex underlying plot that would unravel in 3 films - im off to cry :( ...

In my review and discussion on release day I think I unraveled and understood that all the answers were there - primarily through Davids comments.

The Engineers role are explained cryptically by the actions of the crew of Prometheus = man is the maker of David - we're not divine - they aren't.

Ridley didn't write Alien. In fact mostly what he did was make it look cool . Film is first and foremost visual, yes? I thought Prometheus looked incredibly cool. Show me something cooler.

@major noob: agreed. I think some may be confused about what primary role the director plays. This is why i am hoping we get a commentary track from lindelof. Ridley obviously had a great deal of control over prometheus, but he entrusted lindelof (and spaihts) with the task of fleshing out the nuances of his broad ideas. When you listen to interviews with ridley, its clear that he is concerned with the "broad strokes" of the narrative and every detail of the visual aesthetic of his films.

@dj: cool....but not cooler than prometheus ;)

Dj I certainly hope that's not a picture of you. And I do know what Prometheus is about: humans and the stupid things they do. And a lot more, apparently, but that's open for argument. All I'm saying is, for me, RS is at the top of his game. +1 Joey!

@major noob: damn right he's at the top of his game. I watched prometheus again (digital download) and i love the film now just as much as the second time i viewed it in the theater (second time was the charm...had to go home and reassess my approach after the first viewing)! its breathtaking to behold and contains so many layers. I feel bad (not in an arrogant way, mind you) for those who are involved in a mental fist fight with the film.

@ Joey Agreed! I just want to add that RS fighting for the inclusion of the SJ in Alien was part of making it look cool, and it was mysterious and creepy because all we did was see it. Also, if that thing was indeed an Engineer then I could see the decision to re write history and make them smaller for practical reasons, not the least of which would be framing and composition.

Yes, I agree, Ridley Scott is at the top. 2012 will be remembered well, for me, I will drink wine for that (I'm a teetotaler)

pre-production 5m sketch Engineer's in-film re-scale was an unfortunate 'late decision' imho - you could have EASILY used LOTR-like camera-trick to retain the statuesque Michaelangelian scale/awe - you didn't need this long-shins or actor stood on a box Engineer that we all saw in the Deleted Scene 'engineer speaks'.

Major noob and joey joe - the same person on 2 accounts :D ? :P Joking... Dont get me wrong Ridley is my favourite director of all time but prometheus is merly a good film - a film that had great bits but also has god awful bits too - weirdest film ever and I have to take into account hes not made a great film since 2003 - and this seems to happen to all directors as they get old - maybe they spread them selves too thinly between too many projects or have too many yes men or just plain dont have the brain power - I mean look at other 74 year olds in life! @major noob : "humans and the stupid things they do." weirdly its my interpretation as well although I am not talking about the characters in the film! I do hope the film recovers in future parts etc. or has an overall explanation for why so much didn't make sense but I feel it will never be resolved...and like I say it was a good film it did have some awesome parts!

RS also says about the space jockey scene in alien saying that the SJ had digestion and had to make an emergency landing, but why are there eggs and not urns? Also on the furious gods documentery, there is a little bit where RS says'That shes(shaw) there, SJ stomach rips open and the alien chases after her' and that that is the end of the end. Dunno if that was meant to be prometheus actual ending or its the next one ..... another thing, imagine like a spider goin in that black goo, that'd be messed up lol

I have the Digital Copy from the DVDS/Blue-Ray disc set. I don't see a DC setting for iTunes on Windows when I play the digital copy. Is that my fault for not having an Apple device? 8^)

OK, so all questions are answered. Hmmm, ... I guess that means the best humans can do with the most meaningful questions, is to first treat the "artificial" life form they depend on for the success of the mission as a freak-slave-teapot thing, and then second, answer this teapot's rational questions with: "I'm a human and you're not", na, na-na, na-na-na. OK, so I realize they are on the quest for the knowledge that "must be out there somewhere" regarding human existence. Turns out, the worst bigot on the crew accidentally names the answer and doesn't realize it. In fact, no one realizes it. Not even the artificial man who is trying to not mind that it hurts but is getting his licks in in the meantime just the same! I guess he had the very best teachers... Are we to conclude the Universe made us because it could, and the Universe is very, very, very busy going about everything the Universe can do. So somewhere (turns out to be here), there is life in the Universe. Maybe there is life elsewhere, maybe there has already been life elsewhere, maybe there will be life somewhere else in the future... None of this means anything beyond the fact that life is something the Universe can do. Too bad the rational mind of the machine (David) was apparently too clouded by the design/programming of its maker/owner to see the fallacy of the human pursuit in question. The pursuit of a shadow, a mirage, an echo in our minds. Is this Ridley Scott's answer to The Question? Well, OK, I'll consider it, but I'm afraid I do have to say it isn't as funny as, 42. Now, what's one to do with this insight? Sit in a corner and pout about it? Pull a Charlie and get smashed about it -- thesis proved but desired side-effects dashed? Going forward we could evaluate that which we flounder about doing for psychological/philosophical/theological comfort with otherwise no real value (i.e. no value whatsoever). What would we then do with the truly massive human energies freed from such mental boggling? We could discard such useless, time-frying activities and redirect them to productive pursuits and advancements. Yes, give our status-quo the heave-ho... What narrative would we now tell ourselves such to forge a scaled up and formative direction for human-kind? What narrative without self-deception or the defrauding of others? A big question we may have to stalk for a while to get a good answer. One caution I would urge. Let's not do what the Engineers apparently did, and turn our organic chemistry set into a religion.

"..What would we then do with the truly massive human energies freed .." This is a great question/observation..one that each should ask as humans don't realize the amount of baggage we carry each day. For me..once I retired .. I can't believe how much stress I was carrying from work..as I am much more calm as I go about my daily activities.. I now have time to check out the Prometheus fan site..
