Thanks Starlogger – I agree!
You’re right Red0guy, Shaw is a bit different, as Prometheus is different. There is no xeno in it (Deacon aside), but the creatures in it do show erotic-genital features of both sexes. Yes, she is sexually active too, which is anomalous (Ripley in A3 aside, too, I’m only talking about Scott’s Alien movies). But her insemination is a violation by David, and so she is, like Ripley, the victim of male/’alien’ violence in Prometheus. She prevails in Prometheus, but remains under threat. Her disgusting mutilation is the most disturbing part of A:C for me, even as it restores the central horror theme of Scott’s Alien. This theme revolves around male creation, a theme common to Alien & Blade Runner. The male characters wish to supplant ‘Mother’, they want to claim her gift of creation for their own. The other element to this is a ‘rage’ against ‘Mother’, involving the wish to destroy, devour, ‘have’ her as her gifts are taken from her. That is why David experiments upon her, claims to love and mourn her, and yet keeps her mutilated body on display. His pleasure at seeing her pulled apart is what makes the scenes in the lab so disturbing.
Sorry murnau but I would not include Shaw in the same category. She is no "virgin", she has sex with Halloway, she does not run from the space "dickhead". Further more we "have" probably for years before giving birth to many "bastards" like us. Sorry I still don't understand why did she have the most horrific death in the franchise. So that woman should not trust men, that naivety story again?
I don't believe that fox own the works outright. I believe what usually happens is that fox will have negotiated with giger the sole production rights to his necromonicon iv catalogue but giger will have retained property rights of the catalogue. in actuality, giger would not be able to negotiate with other studios involving any works included within this catalogue. the original alien design is based off of his work and if fox want to use anything else directly or based off of these works within the catalogue, giger or his estate would have to be paid.
Hallett actually said he was very proud of those. He said Matt and him insisted that every one of those drawings give an insight into David's darkness, regardless of how banal it was.

Below is an example of one of Hallett's pieces that Fox legal told him they could not use. Pretty obvious why if you have seen the Giger original, which Fox has no rights to as it was done prior to Alien, not for Alien.
"A shameless re-jigging of a Giger original (below). This was done when early on in the production we thought we'd be legaly allowed to reference the master directly. Legal stepped in and informed us otherwise." - Dane Hallett Facebook

@murnau (love the name, btw!) "Alien" is, to me, the best Horror and the best Science Fiction movie of all-time. I can never imagine it being topped. It is, as you say, so deep and dark and there are just so many layers in it...it stands up to time and multiple viewings very well, never appearing "hokey" or dated. Just a fantastic film in so many ways. I could watch it a bazillion times...in fact, I may have!
viv, u know u will be itching to come back on here as soon as u have watched it again lol
quite plausible that each hanger could facilitate more than 1 juggernaught if say, when the ship lands it lands on a rolling landing mechanism that when the ship is secured it the rolls out the way and clears space for another mechanism for the next ship
iRaptus: 'The Xenomorph is the lurking black spider that secretly wishes to embrace and indulge such desires. That is why you never really get a look at the beast in ALIEN, because no-one wants to see their demons in full, and in the light, and acknowledge its presence as a whole.'
Interesting ideas, iRaptus, and thanks for replying. I think the beast is operating in different ways in the movie, and in a discussion like this. It may be operating differently from the ‘elephant in the room’ in the movie, where yes it is a manifestation of violent, forbidden urges to devour and destroy, that are ‘secret’ as you say, because the creature lurks in the dark and ambushes when you are looking the other way, and is never fully seen. But in this discussion, and in other circles, I stick to the idea that is the ‘elephant’ – it is in plain sight, we have seen (over and over, as fans) what it does, and how in Alien, and now A:C, it is clearly linked to angry impulses toward Mother/the feminine – but it is not being discussed as such. Perhaps this is inevitable, and of course, this is what (good) movies are for, to express parts of the human experience that are not easily approached or admitted to.
Loving this thread btw! It just shows how intelligent us fan boys can be, when we keep the discussion polite and deep-thinking. And good words from Starlogger, thanks for your cool observations. Alien really is one of the deepest movies for me, it is so rich, and never stops giving. It is art-house and blockbuster, mood-piece and horror slasher.
Blade Runner must be my next thread – lots to say on that!
In the novel it says that after the payload was deployed, the Jugganauts were grounded to stop the infection getting off the planet.
My thoughts have always been that there is a decent chance David has not been on the planet for 10 years. He has been travelling to other places maybe ? It is only his words that he has been there for 10 years.
The Jugganauts not working is also from him if i remember correctly. I think David caused the event that lead to early crew revival. The crew ending up checking out Planet 4 due to this is also all part of the plan.
BD, again we don't have enough information about the xeno so it is all speculation at this point. we don't know what limitations the xeno has in terms of energy. how many victims can it transform? was its limit 2-3 at most hence why lambert and parker are simply killed? the xeno certainly seems to take its time with them so was the xeno aware it could no longer complete its part of the egg morphing process and was now just eliminating potential threats to the brett/ dallas eggs? or if it had 1 more left in it was it simply a case of lambert and parker being together so it kills them as looking at the fact there were 2 that they posed a potentially a greater collective threat? knowing there is at least 1 more possible host alive, so it could afford to kill those 2 and still have 1 more potential victim?
at this point in time unfortunately as I pointed out it is all speculation but it is fun to theorise about this stuff
You guys can purchase through Vudu and get both the digital copy and Blu-ray all in one purchase.
I am waiting for the BR. Cant justify buying the digital AND BR in 2 weeks time.
Even though i have many places book marked and ready to breakdown with that lovely picture quality we will get, i am being sensible and waiting for the BR even though i dont want to :(
Anyone know of the best/most pack in the UK to buy? I know some releases have extra stuff on. Who getting what ? Or is there only 1 UK version ?
Heroine, if they put a heroe he will probably be a kinde of Rambo at space and nop, I dont want that.
I found Alien: Covenant and Prometheus to neglect the use of jump scares in favor of longer, more intense sequences. Sequences where you grip the armrests of your chair and go "Oh s***!" over and over.
@joylitt No i don't think they are going to be, since they've already been on streaming for quite some time now (at least most of them). Idris Elba is FANTASTIC in beasts of no nation. A must see. In fact, all those I listed are truly must - sees and will move you in some way. That's why I have Netflix...my wife and I get to see these fantastic movies that don't get their due.
And, joylitt, you know there are no hard feelings here...nothing personal given any opinion differences in any thread, I hope...
I think all those deleted scenes will contribute to our understanding of the engineer's technology. I am 100% sure that it has to do only with biotech and that they are very limited although advanced in other fields. Their technology has to do only with 'meat', for example the recorded data banks of their ships don't seem to gather data like ours (computers-flash memories-hdd etc) they don't seem to possess telecommunications-satellites etc and that they hadn't thought of fail-safe procedures and defense systems, since David a non engineer flew it with a bio weapon back we can deduce that they hadn't invented A.I.. We don't see David being recorded in any of the ship's holographic history playback as if their systems depict and capture only living organisms of a considerably size, I also thought that in the engineers recorded run in Prometheus that black spores that could actually fly as seen in Covenant were hunting them and they were so tiny that their primitive 3D low quality holographic systems could not accurately depict what was going on. Maybe someone bombed the engineers on LV-426 with the pathogen, to prevent the destruction of humanity. I also believe (as I expressed in another thread) that they use beetle DNA for their technology, if you take a look at the corridor's entrance in the engineer room in Prometheus you will see a decoration of a beetle like creature over the entrance.

Something Real To defy the laws of tradition is a crusade only of the brave ;)- Les Claypool, Primus
I think she should survive somehow else its just a rerun of what happened shaw, or atleast get a flashback of what david does to her.
Spaced-Out would you like see her being experimented upon?
I am fine with either hero or heroine. I lean towards heroine since it has always been that way, but it boils down to good story and cast the audience cares about imo.
Lets just hope we dont get another repeat of what happened from Prometheus to covenant, where we dont see what happens to Daniels fate and it jumps forward to the covenant arriving at origae 6.
I think Daniels needs to survive some how, maybe she could escape and send out a distress.
joylitt I feel you are in danger of becoming a big Alien Covenant fan. Looking forward to seeing your future posts :)
lol I am sure interested in watching the deleted scenes :-)
Until then let's see again Covenant. (En)joy(l)it(t)!
daliens "We'll see" haha
joylitt "Oh, ye of little faith!"
My only concern is that by keeping things under wraps for so long, it will inevitably burden the next movie with a lot of exposition.
Considering the new teaser "Phobos" that shows members of the crew of the USCSS Covenant being subjected to a psychological "fear" test I can only assume that they were destined for something frightful. I don't believe Fox would invest so much around Covenant story if the movie would not be important to the development of the franchise. Let's see it again and try to find why it's so important and where it can take us next. Big things have small beginnings so if some considered Covenant a small / filler movie it may be because it prepares us for something big. I hope that after the next movie Covenant will be regarded for what it is, a beautiful, dark and timeless gem.
daliens That's what I'm guessing. The Covenant was probably meant to go to Paradise. There are many clues about that, like you say.
It also gives Walter (if still intact) a way to pursue the covenant.
There is more than meets the eye in Alien Covenant. That is the gift of Sir Ridley Scott.
Does the Blue ray version come with a digital copy? They usually do but my Amazon order does not specify.
wasn't there also a special edition with a book coming ?
