ScorpioStarAlien: Covenant ForumAlien: Awakening (The claustrophobic film)

Anything that leads us back to "In space, no one can hear you scream." And, yes, that claustrophobic atmosphere is what I miss since "Alien" (the one and only) and David Fincher's "Alien 3".

BTW, loved your ideas for the "bugs" and the rest of the family :)

I'd like to see all the concepts concerning David and the Engineers complete, before any reboot or the sort. And, please, no more Ripleys, Newts, Hickses, Marines and whatever Blomkamp had in mind - enough is enough. I particularly think Fox should "reboot" all the dense atmosphere "Alien" gave us at the time, that sense of "In space, no one can hear you scream". And I vote for Sir Ridley, he's the master, he's always been in my opinion, or someone as good as him such as Christopher Nolan.

@BigDave "But i do think Solar Charging Sails would definitely be the method they would use for obtaining all the Ships electrical needs. Apart from those related to Propulsion."

There is not enough energy in the form of light in interstellar space to make it worth the effort. The best and most efficient way to power a ship's electrical needs is nuclear power.

@AdamPD "I wish they'd left the sacrafice bowl in there and not that stupid crystal, the crystal served no purpose."

If it served no purpose, I don't think they would have put it there. If you look closely there are dark veins in the crystal, and it appears to be broken. Some have theorized that this contained the original form of the pathogen, which is why it holds center place on an altar at the foot of the mural.

Ridley and Lindelof have hinted that the Engineers did not make it, so they may have stolen or found it. It goes back to the whole 'Prometheus stole fire from from Mount Olympus and was punished for it' thing.

Joylitt, you spend a lot of time thinking about a movie you claim you didn't like. My biggest jumpscare was during watching Aliens, during Newt's long screaming, that was one of the most horrific moment I've ever seen.

"Jump Scares" do not make a movie "horror". In fact, they are highly regarded as "lower class " manipulations in film school classes in order to appeal to base instincts. In other words, they are a very WEAK technique. EVERYONE jumps automatically when something looks like it is about to come at you (even out of a screen), so it's an easy get for a filmmaker, but it certainly does not make a movie "horror" based on their quantity...

I noticed that i never jumped during A:C.

The most surprising scene as mentioned was Walter getting stabbed. I had a minor neck move which is the start of a "jumpscare" lol ;)

First watch i found myself smiling mostly. Especially when the big moments are on the big screen and RS is showcasing his talent. Solar Sails was impressive to look at first time round.

A:C was not a scary movie for me personally. More a beautiful one only not as beautiful as Prometheus

This would atleast give us back some of the mystery of the original derelict and space jockey, yes we know its an engineer and yes we know the egg came from the black goo, but what we wouldn't know is how it got there and why.

Then they could maybe start a new timeline after resurrection but not involving ripley and it wouldn't even have to have the xeno in it maybe it could be something else that has been created from the black goo, but new and terrifying.

Hi guys newbie here, been lurking on here for a while now and thought id join and give my two cents.

After the way Covenant has turned out i feel now that maybe these prequels should not actually be prequels and should maybe just stay as there own timeline but obviously in the same alien universe and not even tie into Alien, as long as they finish the story and show that david was not the creator of the egg they could finish this however they like and not risk spoiling the original films.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumAlien: Awakening (The claustrophobic film)

The moment when you realize that it will go to hell (first image). Most of the times when I watch that scene I go like "oops" followed by "ouch!".

Maybe it could work as long as it is claustrophobic enough and if the characters are interesting enough/well developed. The claustrophobia was there in Alien and Alien three and is one of the reasons why these movies are good.

I think that Alien and Alien 3 were sort of realistic, if you are in a small place where there is a threat, you can feel the danger but you can't see the reason for it. Imagine if you are in a place with dangerous animals shit can happen there too (to tie it to something that could potentially happen in real life).

The spores were interesting, maybe they can do something similar in AA? I am not sure how that would work but anyways but this depends on what kind of environment that the next movie is set in.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumDid Ripley Ruin the Alien Franchise?

Red0guy@gmail.com: I disagree, Ripley had better personality traits than Daniels. I found it difficult to see what kind of personality she was. She didn’t stand out as a personality like Ripley did. This is a reason why I hope that she will be better written in the next movie (the same goes for Tennessee). Hopefully they will be better written in the next movie (if we will get one).

She is already a Ripley clone, doesn't she have the same rank on the ship? Doesn't she have a line of her's? Kill her off already. And Tennessee is a pale Dallas. Kill him off too.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumSpace Jockey Redesign?

The one at the bottom looks like a space jockey to me, or at least something very close to it. I like the concept image that Dark Nebula posted.

Hopefully they will stick with the bio-mechanical thing when it comes to the SJ or else it would be a disappointment. I just try to imagine how I would react. They have done enough damage the way it is already. Having a man or David as the SJ would totally suck so I hope that they won’t do that but at this moment I am not sure. They made many bad things with Prometheus and Alien Covenant.

My preferred version is that it would be something related to the Engineers. Maybe an Engineer or a distant cousin to them. If it would not be an engineer but something close to it then if that movie would suck when they write about whatever is related to the Engineers, if that would suck then at least it wouldn’t make the SJ look bad and that would save its skin so to speak.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumDid David ruin Alien Covenant?

David didn’t ruin it, the writers did. ; )  Eventually Ridley had a part in this also and Fox. Let Ridley direct but leave him out of the story writing. I listened to a podcast over at AVP-galaxy and there they said something about Scott trying to affect some story of a movie and they rejected his idea because it was dumb (AVP-galaxy number 50, 18:58 – 20:06).

I totally agree that the focus on the AI isn’t good at all. There are so many things to write about that are more interesting. For example: Bishop and Ash were both good and contributed to the story but they were never the main focus (the humans were).

The movie would have been better if they would have focused on the humans, Engineers, and the monster. AI is number four on my list as far as the importance of things in the movie.

Having David as the creator of the Xenos would be so lame. I would rather have the engineers as being the creators, or that the Engineers found some goo or what ever and created it from there. Simply put: there are many ways that could have been more interesting to have as an answer rather than the David thing.

“Because, in a way, the exaggerated focus on David together with the neglect of the human element of the story did ruin the movie.”

This and also:

“The FOCUS on David as a main character is what I didn't like. He is merely PART of the evolution. . . “

Exactly, he is a part of the story of things that affect each other (humans, AI, monsters, Engineers) and not the total sum of it all so to speak. There should be some balance of what they focus on and now that balance isn’t there. Maybe they could keep him but they should focus more on the humans and terror because these two parts were lacking in the movie.

Scott focusing on creation, well, but having David as the creator of the original Xeno is lame. I would not mind if he found something that the Engineers left and developed it as is own version.

A podcast from AVP galaxy had an interview with Alan Dean Foster and many of his ideas in the Alien Covenant novelization seemed to make more sense than what we saw in the movie. The podcast is the AVP galaxy podcast episode 51. Let him have an influence over the script and it might be better than both Prometheus and AC.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumDid Ripley Ruin the Alien Franchise?

Nah, she did well in 1-3 even though they should have focused more on other characters also, it was AR that was bad. Vasques and Hicks were way more interesting than Ripley in Aliens IMO. Ripley was one of the least interesting characters in Aliens. I like how she ended in Alien 3, they should have stopped there.

One thing that is good about the prequels is that there is no Ripley. It is not that the character is bad, I just don’t understand why she has got to be in every alien related movie.

I agree with Dr. Curt Connors that they should keep and develop Daniels in the next movie to make her more interesting. Her character could have been done a lot better and the same goes for Tennessee. They don’t have a lot that makes them stand out compared to many other characters in Covenant. Each person should have distinct personality traits in a movie in order to make him or her interesting, Covenant failed a lot with this.

The lack of the bio-mechanical look was not that much of a deal for me, there were other things that were annoying. To me the bio-mechanical look is something that they should keep until we have come closer to Alien IMO.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumA Better Fate for Shaw?

Shaw is dead, hell yeah! I despised her character because she was naïve and lacked common sense. One of the things that AC did right was to kill her outside of the movie.

Hopefully they won't make a Ripley and clone her because then we would have to endure her for one more round. It would annoy me if they would get her character in any other movie other than maybe a cameo.

Daniels was better because at least she wasn't naïve or stupid. They got to develop her character a lot better in the next movie because she was sort of anonymous (didn't have a very well-developed character) in AC.

There is the posibility of a Reboot, but will they reboot the whole Prequels, as if Prometheus and Alien Covenant did not happen?"

Maybe it could work to re-boot the prequels but I think that they should finish what they are doing. Focus on the human characters and connect the SJ and the Xeno closer to each other and leave some mystery there. Perhaps they should have a totally different director for the next prequel series (especially since RS seems to care mostly about the AI anyway)? Maybe have prequel 1 and prequel 2?

I can figure out things in broad strokes that I would prefer that they would have done to change the story that would work a lot better. Mainly the changes would be about the AI, the Xeno origins, and the Space jockey. To me the AI should have less of a role, the Xeno would be something that the Engineers/those that have the Engineer roles now eventually found and updated. David and AI would have nothing to do with it (because it would suck, sorry for being emotional here but there are more interesting ways to do it) but if he must have something to do with it then he could have re-created it but then that must be explained without ambiguity. Human characters would be the most important part. This would be if I would write it but I am not good at writing these kinds of things but I have many ideas.

As far as the derelict is concerned they would rather have it ambiguous rather than having an obvious answer that is weak. If they must show us something of it then just show some details but keep the whole a mystery.

"Because if they U-Turn and the Eggs on the Derelict are not from Davids experiments... they face having to explain the Derelict Eggs to some degree, do they do this and keep some mystery or do they have to Spoon Feed and show us what happened... like Alien Covenant does not Spoon Feed us what happened to Dr Shaw, only the outcome... Dr Shaw's Corpse is thus just as the Space Jockeys was in Alien.."

This

If they will stick with David creating the eggs then I hope that the Engineers will beat him, steal the eggs and then try to bomb humanity with them.  My chain of thinking goes like this: Humanity gone wrong, AI created by mankind try to destroy the Engineers the engineers feel that they need to destroy mankind I simply refuse to have David being the pilot on LV-426. Maybe Engineers wanted to have mankind as slaves, mankind rebelled against the Engineers and the Engineers wanted to punish mankind.)

When the prequels are done then if we still don't have a satisfying answer to it then maybe I will throw them away (like "nah, they’re bad") and pretend that only Alien 1, 2, and 3 happened. I would most likely blame Fox and Ridley.

I agree with DK, seeing it take off would be enough for me, I want to keep some mystery in this.

We don’t need to see where they keep their clothes at the Nostromo and we don’t need to see exactly how the monster bursted out of the SJ.

@MU/TH/UR 9000

Thank you so much!!! Seriously, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! There are very few things I enjoy more than when someone enjoys something I write. What an awesome way to conclude the day!!!

"My heart broke reading this..." I'll be very honest with you, my heart broke writing and thinking of this! As soon as this scenario took shape in my head, it was the only possible outcome I could imagine for poor good-hearted Walter, and I felt like I musn't rest until I got it into other people's heads too! Maybe that's a bit of misery-loves-company, lol.

Normally when I write fan-fictions they start off with me thinking "I wonder what happened to so-and-so..." and then envisioning what I think most likely happened off-screen.

I've never taken a request before, but I'm excited about the prospect! If you were to make one, what would it be?

I will definitely keep you updated if I write another fan fiction.

(Also, since you like my writing so far, here is one other short story I wrote:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/3drtah/my_wife_didnt_want_me_to_go_into_the_bedroom/

It is not a fan fiction and is not in any way Covenant or Alien related, so if you are going through an Alien obsession right now - like I am - and do not wish to read anything non-Alien related, I completely understand.)

And again, thank you SO MUCH!!! :D

Well...I thought the xeno was pretty terrifying in the Ricks and Upworth scene. ...You didn't think that was scary?

Also, you have to admit, the neomorph was pretty terrifying, right? I think it was actually scarier than the xeno...maybe...because it was more human-like. Kind of fell into the uncanny valley.

That startling scene where it suddenly appears next to Rosenthal as she's dressing her wounds...nightmare fuel.

I hope there is more Engineer's and hopefully we get to learn more about them.

The main thing I want is the following...

I want the Xenomorph to be scary!!!  The Xeno was never scary in A:C.  If anyone disagree's, than I am jealous because I wish it was for me.  I watched the original Alien after not seeing it for a long time before Alien:Covenant came out and I screamed uncontrollable one time in the movie.  I loved it after I stopped screaming!!  I definitely had a big grin on my face.  Good stuff.  Alien: Covenant brought nothing like that even close.  The problem isn't the Xeno.  The problem is how the Xeno is presented to us.  I don't know who's fault that is, but it's a big problem for the franchise.  The Xeno was scary in all of the Alien movies (except Prometheus, since there wasn't one).  I either screamed or wanted to turn the movie off because I was so scared.  Alien3 was the weakest of them all actually, but the Xeno in Alien3 was scarier than any Xeno or Neomorph in A:C.

So, if the Xeno is scary again in Alien:Awakening, I am happy.  If there are Engineer's and more info on them, I think we may have the best Alien movie ever!  Maybe?

I Moon GirlAlien: Covenant ForumTitan Books' Prequel Cover and expanded synopsis available

I am so glad this book was written!  This could improve the story of A:C as well.  Sadly, it most likely wont make the Xenomorph as scary as it used to be in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.  I am still excited to learn more about the corporate side of the Alien franchise.  So far, according to the movies, we aren't offered much.  I guess there could be some info in A:R, but I haven't seen that in awhile.  Still, the picture painted in my mind is the Weyland Co. only cares about the dollar and will lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want.  If Weyland Yutani funded a colonization mission, then that paints a different picture.  The question is what was there reasoning.  I can't trust Weyland Yutani at the moment, but maybe that will change with this new novel.  I can't wait!
