Regarding the Alphas.... the Elders if you would... a lot has evolved over time regarding the Engineers.
Alphas is a good name, as i would have tackled a True Origins Prequel with the Name Alien: Alpha
But back to the Engineers... the original idea's where TWO Fold... on one idea the Engineers were a Ancient Powerful Godlike Race, who looked different to the Engineers we had in Prometheus. These earlier concepts were a bit bizarre.

As these Evolved they became more Human, until latter concepts we had them appear very Human only with some Roman Statue like Features and Bald.... However of note is HR Gigers Face Hugged Humanoids were also Bald.
The ideas at the time of Alien Engineers final draft, was these Engineers were pretty much similar to what we ended up with, only they was 15ft Tall, and they were a Ancient Race who had Genetically Evolved themselves to the point they could no longer Procreate, and they had to then find other methods to Procreate.
Prometheus basically kept this concept, only we see some older more frail looking Engineers who are to be known as the Elders, there was a bit of Dialog in the Sacrificial Scene, which we sadly never got to hear or see apart from a tiny snippet from the one Elder on the Blu-ray extras... where he says to the Sacrificial Engineer
"Let your body become the dirt. Your blood become the waters. And may your soul become their way back to us."
So the Sacrificial Scene had a great importance to the Engineers, it was needed....
Ridley Scott had mentioned after Prometheus that the Engineers could procreate in other ways, but the Sacrificial Scene was just how they chose to do it, and it would be like some Ancient Tribes, where a Sacrificial Offering is Chosen, and this Individual would be treated like a Prince for a year, and then they would be Sacrificed to the Gods for a Better Harvest etc.
So RS had informed us here that there is a very Religious/Ritualistic reason for the Sacrificial Scene.
Ridley had mentioned after Prometheus, regarding the removal of the Elders Scene, that he did not want to give to much away in the first movie, and to retain some Mystery and that he did not want to MEET God in the First Movie.
Ridley Scott also referred to the Engineers as Fallen Angels, he also said as far as David and Dr Shaw that they would be off to the Planet of the Engineers, but the beings they find are not GOD's (not in the traditional sense) and that they are not Benevolent.
RS also a number of times referenced Paradise Lost when talking about the Engineers, this could be that the Engineers are referred to as Fallen Angels, because simply a connection to beings with Wicked/Sinister Motives. But he could also be literally talking about other themes from Paradise Lost.
Thus indicating some kind of Fall of these Engineers, which could infer they had rebelled and gone against the Will/Intentions of either the rest of their Race, or their Hierarchy/Creators.
As RS announced Alien: Paradise Lost, he touched upon the Engineers again, and again Fallen Angels was mentioned and Paradise Lost, where RS said in that Poem the Fallen Angels are the ones who had the most Fun.
He then mentioned about if the Engineers are the Forerunners to Mankind, then What/Who allowed for Worlds to be suitable for the Engineers to be able to seed in the first place.... were is the BIG GUY.... also mentioning and questioning was the Big Bang a Accident?
He then further added, that you have this ONE Guy who is very Hansom, goes to all the Parties and gets all the Girls, while you have another Guy who is not as Hansom and stays at home being boring.
This could indeed be a reference to the Fun and Frolics the Fallen Angels get up to in the Biblical Sense/Paradise Lost compared to their Angelic Counter-parts and GOD. Maybe this could imply their is a Hierarchy of beings above the Engineers and the Engineers are a Sub-creation in which some of them had become Rebellious and started to do things against the Will of the Hierarchy.
We then have the Name Change of Alien Covenant, and our movie does not delve into our Engineers much, only showing us that these beings David Bombards are more Human looking than the Engineers we saw in Prometheus and the Elders, maybe a Budget Oversight for the difference of appearance.
These beings seem to be kept in a very Ancient kind of Culture/Civilization they have Technology but its only used for essential things, and they pretty much live out primitive by comparison (with LV-223 Engineer) Lives. Much like Buddhist Monks do on Earth.
We do see the Cathedral Dome has some kind of Technology at the Top, and this is a Central place to these Engineers a place that during the Bombardment these beings attempted to run toward to escape the Carnage. Inside this place maintains a very Ancient looking Aesthetic, with Giant Stone Carved Faces of beings who look like the Elder Engineers from Prometheus. This place also has a giant Slab Table, which some on set had said had the look of a Sacrificial Table and even had a Sacrificial Blade on it.
Ridley Scott had referenced in regards to these Stone Faces, that they was the Wise Men (Ancient/Elders) they was the Apostles (representatives of a order/agenda) and Superior Beings (Superior to who? Engineers or Humans). Another member of Production said these Stone Faces are the Hierarchy.
Yet we also see in AC Technology, we have the Hanger that was opening up and Davids Juggernaught was heading towards, we could assume this was to store Engineer Ships, then we saw the Docking Ship, Larger than the Juggernaught it appeared to be too large to fit in the Hanger and it appeared the Docking Ship arrived from a different location as the Hanger appeared to not long opened up for Davids Juggernaught. (concept work shows the Docking Ship actually leaving this Hanger).
So there is Technology related to the LV-223 Engineers, the interesting thing is around this Hanger, are 4 Large Stone Sitting Engineer Statues, with what appears to be a Bowl or similar that they are holding, the pose and look of these are the same as the Buddhist Offering Statues. Perhaps a Clue to the Purpose of this Place?
The deleted Scene and concept shows this Hanger Actually has another 3-4 Juggernauts inside.
Following the release of Alien Covenant, Ridley Scott has mentioned those beings on Planet 4 are actually Engineers and more so he referred them to the ORIGINAL Engineers... so does that mean the Prometheus ones are not the Originals? Ridley Scott also said these beings lived for about 150 years.
The biggest surprise for AC has to be that these beings had Females, and they also had infants (David experimented with them) So we have these beings on Planet 4, who seem to shun Technology that appears to be restricted to the Hanger surrounded by OFFERING Statues. These beings are more Human looking, in complexion and eyes, and they have Male/Females and can Procreate. They also live for 150 years.
And are the Original Engineers, but they are not the Hierarchy/Elders or Founders.
We have to ask why the Sacrificial Scene then? Why do those Engineers in Prometheus look so different? If they are not the Original Ones, and we have seen the Elders Removed so their appearance is no longer Canon, well cant be take as Canon... What we are left with is the Sacrificial Engineer and LV-223 ones that appear to posses more Technology and look more Genetically Evolved.
Its a Far cry from the Original Concepts, and ideas of a Ancient Race who Evolved themselves past the point of Procreation who live for Thousands of years, but not being able to Procreate no more, had to find alternative ways to Create Life.
The only last Point to add to all of this which is what RS has confirmed... (all of the above) is that Engineers return to that Planet from time to time, and when they next return they discover the destruction that has befell those beings on Planet 4 at the hands of David and they surely wont be happy when they discover this.
This means some Engineers maybe go about going to different Worlds and Return to Planet 4 for some purpose and this is their Home-world... or it could be that Planet 4 is just One World that contains these beings and they have other Engineers who go World to World, and so have other Worlds like this
In Closing... i would like to add that the Engineers Navigation System in Prometheus had other Galaxies and so this Race certainly is not contained within the small confines of a Explored Universe in Alien Franchise where LV-223/426 System and Planet 4 are by no means vastly far apart in context to the Technology of Space Travel at the time of ALIEN.
@BigDave - The more I look at this mural, the more I think about some of the comments from H.R. Giger. IMHO the biomechanical female strangely resembles an Engineer's Juggernaught ship. The comment H.R. Giger once made was that the eggs were made by the ships. I just thought it was interesting this came to mind, but something new comes to mind every time I gaze upon his works! HAHA!!
BigDave - I like the idea of the space jockey suit being similar to the LV223 engineers and that when they die, the suit dies. Thus resulting in the brownish fossil color. Very similar, like you said, to cacti and how they turn from green to a dead brown color.
I also just now realized that the humanoid figures in the life cycle mural also have a kind of bubble around their heads as well. Althoguh this could just be the aesthetic Giger was going for when he made it.
@leto
Indeed this could well be something to be explored, the great thing about the Franchise and Ambiguity and how RS had Prometheus touch upon a connection to Ancient Religions and Mythos, is it really leaves it very open to who is at the Top of any Chain of Hierarchy, its one thing i had the biggest problem with focusing on a single Plot that covers this for my Prometheus 2 so i abandoned it.
As far as the Source for that Critters5 i think this is just a theory Leto has based on looking at the Mural, it can be interpreted in different ways, and mind is completely different.... And it appears the Xenomorph is but just a Bio-Weapon...... HOWEVER...
If we look at the Mural intended for Alien...

This appears to connect somewhat to the Engineers being part of a Self Sacrifice to Procreate the Xenomorph, that appears to be created by the Ships themselves as if the Ships and Xenomorph are connected. But alas this was Gigers idea for Alien, and things have moved on since that.
This HOWEVER does not mean this could be explored... the very Origins for Alien came from Star Beast, the Space Jockey was a Skeletal remains of a Giant Humanoid Race in that Story who happened to come across a world which had a Pyramid that contained left over Spores/Eggs of a long gone Alien Race, the Giant Humanoids had attempted to move these Spores to their ship and got infected and sent off a SOS/Warning.
The Spores/Eggs of the Star Beast, are the End/Start point of the Life-Cycle and these Organisms at one point had become a Civilization/Culture who required Sacrifices to Procreate their Species. So maybe FOX/RS could go down the route that some Ancient Organism/Race are above the Engineers and these Organisms could be related to the Xenomorph but not exactly the same as the Xenomorph.
Certainly one route i was going to take, and tie things in to this idea meets HR Gigers idea, meets the Annunaki Tale Idea. Also fits with Rebellion in other Mythos and Religions.
I'm putting my money on the derelict ending up not being that old, and the eggs were all made from all of the colonists somehow.
Bigdave so true about the character development issues. How does RS let that happen being such a veteran director?
Amazing... what a lot of Effort has gone into the detail of this, considering its a Small Project, this is the kind of idea that would make a great game, especially if its done in the style of Survival Horror, like Alien Isolation but with a bit more action and weapons....
I certainly look forwards to more development on this Project and Well Done ;)
Bigdave, you really think RS will get funding for TWO more movies? Yea I think the only options for the thousands of eggs is, Queen with a very fast egg laying ability, egg morphing, or some plot twist where the shift is in fact ancient from Engineer experiments with the xenomorph which was later reincarnated by David's experiments.
Indeed they have written themselves into a bit of a corner with the ending... a complaint with the Prequels was lack of Character Depth, and then the only TWO Surviving Characters from Prometheus and the TWO with any real depth to their Characters, were David and Dr Shaw... they killed Shaw off screen, and so Alien Covenant came along and apart from David/Walter they again had TWO Characters in Daniels and Tennessee and once again, by revealing that Daniels is aware Walter is David, it means things dont bold well for the chances of these Characters Surviving.
Especially if they are going to introduce us to more Humans, how are these going to interact with Daniels and Tennessee surely once Daniels is with Tennessee she will reveal to him who Walter really is.
@ali81
Indeed we have to try and think about Davids Agenda, i pointed out i think in this Topic if not then another about the set up points for the sequel, and indeed Origae-6 is a Habitable World, but so is Planet 4, however the risk is there of those Spores... If David wants to Pursue and Evolve his Xenomorphs, without contamination with Neomorphs (having Human's get themselves infected) then indeed setting up Shop on a World that has no Neomorph Spores would be ideal for his plans. The Xenomorph is a Creation that can be better controlled that a Neomorph one, Neomorph Spores can be hidden away and so unintentional infections could arise.
With the Xenomorph David could contain the Eggs within a area of his choosing.. so it makes more logical choice to set up any Egg Colony on Origae-6 rather than on-board the ship.
Another kind of Bad Writing Choice was the Advent Prologue, with David and the Olive Branch, i feel this now allows some at he company who intercept this to be aware of what David is up to.... so it would not pass as like Aliens or Alien or even Prometheus and Alien Covenant, where the incoming Humans for the most part had no idea of what was going on. So this as well as Daniels finding out who David is, have kind of put them into a corner a bit.
I think as David is more superior to Mankind, and he apparently is Perfectly Safe in handling the Black Goo, he may feel this TOOL was and is way more too powerful for Humans to use, and even the Engineers. It would be likely that he would see his creation, and then the discovery of LV-223 and the Pathogen that the Engineers could not control and fell foul to... where as David would not... as being some kind of Destiny for David.
I think one of the things RS will be exploring more in the Sequel would indeed been Davids Psychology and how David is evolving emotionally to see himself as some kind of God, having a Divine Right to this Substance, and i feel we will see him indeed getting that Wanna-be God Complex that we see Weyland had.
David has grown Sentient, he knows he is Superior to Humans, he knows the Engineers are Mortal after all and its their Knowledge and Technology that gives them Power, apart from those on LV-223 being Physically Stronger, David would see himself as Superior to the Engineers. And knowing that the Black Goo is a Powerful tool of the Engineers that they could not control, yet David has no worries about being infected by it, would make David no doubt think that it was his Destiny to gain this Power....
I think the whole set up for David now, could be that he would aspire to be the NEW King.
Bigdave, 2 face huggers for Tennesse and Daniels?
Well welcome back and i guess patience is a virtue and so if it takes more time for you to finish your project to make sure its right for you then that can only be a good thing ;)
Leto, that is interesting. What is your source?
ali81, Scott did say that the Engineers did not create man, so maybe that would be the Alphas etc?
BigDave I like Alien:Covenant....But I'd rather have watched your Prometheus 2.
I'd also like to think David told the Prometheus crew and Shaw that he sent a warning signal, with all the LV223 info back to Earth....But he probably lied and didn't......Humanity getting hold of the black goo would be a disaster on many levels! Not that he would mind if humans wiped themselves out....It's the fact they might actually use it in the correct way.
Sorry but I have to disagree with you. Oram's choice to follow the Devil in the basement and getting facehugged is only a lazy parallel to the fall of man from the Bible. No one would act like in real life. And the portrayal of Weyland as an arrogant fool was too childish and idiotic (using brute force to submit his creation, instead of starting on debug the David's programming), at least compared to Nathan from Ex Machina or Tyrell from the original Blade Runner.
Alphas is xenomorphs. They become technology-dependent and created Engineers and Humans for reproductive system. Engineers worshiped them (see the mural) and after the death of xenomorphs, tryed to ressurect them. But Engineers has fail and decided to "destroy for create" humans. This was the last attempt, but they has fail again.
Now the David want create the perfect live and helps (specially or not) to xenomorphs resurrection. And he have same fail again and again. David created a just monsters.
@ Gavin
Thanks for your reply. I think what I am getting from you is with a great deal of thought you can make the micro management of the action and the A L I E N's for want of a better word stealth and ingenuity much more interesting and "fresh". So the drama is in the curiosity of its behaviour. An interesting thought and when put alongside A C and the behaviour of the creature shows how utterly unimaginative its portrayal was. Listening to Ridley's commentary he is riffing not creating.
@chli
I fundamentally disagree with you the problem of A C is not the portrayal of characters it is the portrayal of the beast. There are three characters the couple on the Covenant and the beheaded woman who are completely flat and so is their demise but then its no coincidence that John Logan's original sprit gave much more time to the former and the latter didn't exist.
The panic of T's wife Ledward's sneaking off for a smoke the new way to deal with grief Daniels the pentecostal Oram all felt like real people but then I view the Prometheus crew as representing dozens of people I have met particularly the loutish smoking Fifield and the incautious Gay Milburn. The problem with them was the editing out of the lead in scene and choreographing of the famous cobra scene.
But as you know I am in the camp that says in the real world people do stupid things.
“Dr. Shaw, your crucifix may cause confusion to whomever or whatever we meet at the Gate. They may also question this. It is a flash drive that they may or may not understand, and we should keep it from their view. “ David gives a smile. “Even I am not sure what is on that flash drive. It must be important.”
Shaw thrashes out of David’s grip. David is unaware that the cryo pod prepared her for the gravitational variance from earth and that she is very mobile and quite physically capable.
“”I have your soul in this flash drive if such thing as a soul even exists! I don't know anymore! There are memories here you cannot possibly know and if you don’t get me through this alive, you will never know them! make your choice!”
David replies, "I have no soul. I am quite sure. I cannot speak for humans, but I suspect it would be the same as any creature, synthetic or biological. You claim that flash drive holds my memories. Memories of what?"
And here comes the new trailer

Stiffly Dr Shaw pushes herself upright in the cryo bed, clutching at the disproportionately wide sides of the bath with cold fingers. Sensing her movement, thick tubing previously attached in a line down her spine release with a hiss, dropping into the viscous pink fluid remaining in the bottom of the bed. Shuddering, she throws her legs over the walls and pushes forward.
Her bare feet meet the cold grey floor, but her legs fail to take her weight and she collapses in a heap with a hiss of pain. Stubbornly she commands her legs to obey but they are numb and motionless.
"David, my legs! I can't walk!"
Silence engulfs her. She twists in her awkward position on the floor towards David. He has gone silent and immobile again.
"David!" she shouts fearfully.
The catatonic android eerily turns its head towards her, eyes lifeless and staring. Unnervingly, words continue to escape from a mouth not moving. "Your legs will return to you in a short time. You will be stronger for it. For now, this synthetic will be your transport. We have programmed a route into its processing bank. We will meet you shortly Dr Shaw".
Then, like a veil being lifted the near-sentient programming returns with a small twitch, and David's reassuringly polite smile returns.
"I believe Dr Shaw, we have arrived at the gates of Heaven". He says innocently, a cordially warm look on his face. He holds her cross out to her, dangling in the space between them. It swings gently like a pendulum back and forth. With one hand she clutches the flashdrive reassuringly, the other reaching out for her cross.
"Pick me up David" she beckons cautiously. She takes a swipe at her cross feeling suddenly vulnerable. He snatches it back and slides it delicately over his head.
The David she feared was not here. This was not him, just a blank personality, disturbingly naive and unaware of the significance of his action. Absolute neutrality.
She suddenly felt the weight of loneliness crushing against her. Whatever she encountered here, she would do so alone, without the comfort of companionship. Even from a synthetic.
Davids bends to scoop her up, the cordial polite smile now fixed on his polished face.
after a few moments at the console, Davids eyes widen.
''fascinating. it seems these adaptations haven't only altered your physical appearance, but they have integrated themselves into your organs and muscles. theorising. the cryo pod I placed you in seems to have altered you in ways to make you more adaptable to the environment of its natural occupants ecosystem. im reading a much harsher environment outside with a gravity 3 times heavier than back on earth. the atmosphere as well contains higher concentrations of base elements. I doubt you would be able to function properly without these alterations''.
Shaw, letting the flash drive drop from her hands back to hanging from her neck, is becoming more aware of her environment and has fleeting flashes of memories of the events that transpired during the Prometheus mission.
David's holographic mirror is still on and Shaw looks at herself again. She has no hair and notices her pale elongated head. Her face looks the same except that her eyes are simply black and white. She becomes affraid of her new appearance.
"David, why do I look like this? What is wrong with me? Is there something wrong with me?"
David does not respond. Shaw remembers to issue her questions in the form of a command or statement. "David, tell me what has happened to me!"
""Unknown, Dr. I am attempting to research the systems of this vessel. My programming identifies you as humanoid with moderate dehydration and mal nourishment with anomalies I cannot identify at this time."
David senses Shaw's distress and his basic programming to serve humans prompts a quirky response.
In a soothing and calm voice, David says, "Dr. Shaw, you look just fine. It seems we are searching for and possibly about to find an answer or answers to all of this," He manages a smile.
from what I took from Prometheus, I had the sacrificial engineer and the engineers in the tear drop ship to be a more religious sect of their civilisation and those on lv223 to be part of the military side.
''It has meaning, this I know, Though I do not remember exactly what. maybe it is best you hold onto it in case these meanings come back to me in time''.
''as you wish'' David replies, staring at the metallic symbol with childish intrigue.
a new light begins to flash at the pilots console. ''I believe we have docked at our destination Dr Shaw, I cannot say where, or with whom, but I do believe we will have company very shortly''.
Shaw again looks at the flash drive, contemplating the restoration of the David she once knew. ''no''. regardless of how unprepared they are for their audience with her makers, a fact that wouldn't be such an issue with David restored, that David is too dangerous to be resurrected.
Back to the OP- Indeed I am having a great time here!
yea im just reading it over to get me bearings bud
ali81 That is the beauty- wherever we take it. So far joylitt and I are advancing it. Jump in, the water is fine!
I saw that thread. what point is the story upto?
I think the creators were the Elders in the tear drop shaped ship. There was evidence of their presence in the form of rock carvings and Big heads in the citidel in AC. Again, I am fine to leave it there and ambiguous. Will we see more? I think it is possible but would be minimal. It could even be in the form of trailers or teasers.
bang on dk, this site is miles better than AC and reading all the theories is awesome. the pre-AC discussions on theories of how AC was gna take Prometheus forward were amazing. just a shame certain people from FOX didn't read them. or maybe they did n thought 'do u know how expensive this would be to put into a movie? f**k it, lets got cheap option, kill the engineers n make it about David' lol
would love to have a race above the engineers inserted into the franchise but theres no evidence yet there is a higher power. and I very much doubt wed get to see them anyway, wev had about 10 mins worth of engineers in 2 films and their the whole point of the prequel series being made in the first place so I wouldn't hold my breath
i think they may have screwed up with the ending to AC a bit bigdave. from what I gathered from the ending of the film was David would go to origae6 for a few reasons. the humans have done their investigations and have chosen the planet because they believe it best suits humanity. I don't see David taking his 200 test subjects to a toxic planet where he couldn't let them out of the ship. secondly, I believe that he feels he would be left alone to do his works. the ships crew was killed off as reported but im sure amongst the colonists there are plenty of people who can carry out the terraforming mission and establish the colony just fine so WY may not send anyone out as the mission isn't a disaster yet. the fact David pretends to be Walter in the transmission is what leads me to this yet why have David send the olive branch message aswell? surely the company will send someone. unless he wants them to send people but I don't see why he would need anyone to come to origae6
Upon observing her reflection, Shaw notices the flash drive and crucifix around her neck. She remembers what the flash drive is. With her new feelings of strength, energy and power, she sees the crucifix as a strange object. She no longer recognizes what it is or means. Still, she recalls something…
“David, I think you wanted this at some time on the Prometheus.” She takes off of her neck and offers it to David. David, being wiped of memories of that event, takes it. He examines it curiously. “A symbol of a bygone era. A symbol of belief according to my memory banks. Interesting. It is also a piece of metal. I do not recall desiring to possess it. Shall I keep it for you?”
All of the sudden, a torrent of words start to come out from David's mouth, which remains uncomfortably open. The words are spoken in english, as the transmitters are manipulating the synthetic's synapses and vocal processors. "We have detected a biological entity. Earthling. Evolutionary level for first contact: incomplete. Secondary entity is an artificial intelligence. Fully scanned and modified for compliance with our security protocols. Biological entity has been assimilated by our vessel's matrix. Changes has been made at a cellular level so it would be able to withstand the conditions of our planet.
"What kind of changes" asks Elizabeth.
Biological entity is now clear to dock into our port. Quadrant Beta789, security clearance Theta109786
"You haven't answer to my question"
Elizabeth notices that that invisible force that was keeping her tied down to the pod has subsided. She slowly starts to get out from the pod, as several tubes detach themselves from her back.
David is standing beside her, looking perplexed: "There is something you need to see" he says.
The synthetic casts a reflective hologram in front of Shaw. The image that forms leaves her speechless.
Her body is covered by a kind of amour that seems to have grown out of her skin. It is made of a biologically looking substance which is as hard as diamond, yet flexible. This amour has also enveloped most of her head, causing her cranium to become elongated towards the back, making her look like a sinister insect. She is horrified but what she sees, and yet she feels as strong as a tiger that has just been released from its cage.
"This is not as bad as it could be" she says "I still feel like myself. I also feel so strong. Like I could rip your head off". David smiles, unaware she has just made a joke.
I agree with you that Kane isn’t a dynamic character. I would say that character development usually is for the main character and perhaps for the antagonist. The main character needs a backup of character actors who present interesting, funny or perhaps irritating traits. They are often stereotyped. You are right, of course, that we have gotten to know them by watching these film many times, but if you have fewer characters they get more screen time. They become familiar (even though they don’t change).
In Aliens there were more characters than in Alien, but I think there was a core which we followed for a longer time, and those who were more peripheral stuck out. In AC there were more anonymous characters and the reason for this might be that Scott opted for a more plot-driven movie with lots of action to satisfy (parts of) the fans. This might also be the reason for the many mini-movies - compensation for the loss of characterization and other things?
Which movie is the most Lovecraftian is perhaps a matter of dispute but the difference between Alien and AC is that Alien was creepy (with the monster lurking in the shadows of the long corridors of The Nostromo) whereas AC was about action (with a few exceptions, not creepy at all).
Sorry but have you ever read anything by Lovecraft? The are focus on people that meet powers so unknown so not caring, so that terrifying that they go insane. Lovecraftian horror is the fear of the unknown. See John Carpenter the Apocalypse Trilogy.
In the whole Alien franchise Prometheus is the most Lovecraftian, being somewhat a rip-off of Lovecraft's At the Montains of Madness. In Covenant however, we have no awakening ancient horror as the engineers are killed of in 10 seconds and the Alien is a scientific experiment. Insanity was produced by malfunction due to lack of proper maintenance, not exposure to the ancient beings. Yeah sure we have monster, but the are indirectly created by humans, using 19th century methodology and technology. The horror (David) is not an ancient one, he is not indifferent towards humanity, he wants to destroy it.
Alien Covenant is a gothic horror story, similar to Frankenstein, but way meaner, and HP Lovecraft wrote Herbert West-Reanimator to parody it.
So, you can like AC, but it is far from being Lovecraftian.
New director please. Thanks.
