Xeno, you need to compare the theatrical version against the director's cut.
Here is the original

I cannot find the version that is in the director's cut, but I will have a better look later.
I have no idea why they changed it, the original is very off putting .

Seems like just about everybody is in agreement, that the original (Ben Burtt) sound effect for this scene is superior to the one that was subsequently edited into the 2003 Director’s Cut for thearical release and DVD. I happen to agree with that aesthetic opinion. It has a weird sort of…hydro-electronic tonality that (to me) works perfectly with the whole biomechanical pseudo- nature of the Space Jockey and its vessel. As mentioned by another member, the reedited sound effect does sound strikingly similar to one particular sound effect heard in the “STAR WARS” cantina scene. Perhaps, it too is also a Ben Burtt sound design creation. I think that the original sound is far more disturbing and otherworldly though…and therefore, right on the money.
@Arrgy,
I think that’s an interesting idea you have there. I’ve pondered that myself. I suppose that I just prefer the idea that “the Company” (WT) was just as much in the dark about the Alien transmission and situation, as our favorite Space truckers. I like to imagine that the Company was also unable to completely decrypt or decipher the transmission. And that they just didn’t mind putting their employees in harm’s way, if it might mean bigger profits. Wouldn’t be the first time. I like your idea though. I guess this is part of the reason that I hope that the new film doesn’t just explain everything away. I really like the mystery of it all…

I agree with all of what your saying Frantz but in gladiator the subject matter of the film would merit a stronger depiction of the kind of horrors the romans forced people to do in the gladiatorial arena.
Also centurion was not intended to be a laugh out loud romp and like Unadan i thought it was quite brutal but realistic.
If you get the chance to see or maybe you have seen Caligula then you can appreciate the savage brutality of the Roman empire although on the whole its a dated film now and quite crap lol.
ReplyFrantzPrometheus ForumTo be or not to be pg 13Oct 25, 2011
The roman empire was not more brutal than any other empire ( or even republic ) of history ... you surely know that Gibbon said "If a man were called to fix the period in the history of the world during which the condition of the humans race was most happy and prosperious , he would , without hesitation , name that which elapsed from the death of Domitian to the ascension of commodus . the vast extent of the Roman empire was governed by absolute power , under the guidance of virtue and wisdom etc etc ..."
The people who watched Gladiator fights were no better than the ones watching a Nascar race waiting for a crash .
Btw to me Centurion is a "light" movie ..entertaining but not heavy . "Black Death" is an heavier one .

They could even tell me they slapped a "PG" rating on it, I might be disappointed and/or "P.O.'d" but I'd be lying if I didn't say "I don't care I'm goin' anyways".

They are being transformed into eggs, but as this was a deleted scene, and Cameron changed the life cycle in Aliens (Alien Queen) I doubt it will be referenced in Prometheus. However, I do think human transformation will be a big factor in Prometheus.
The cocoon sequence, involving the transformation of Brett and Dallas into eggs, was filmed but was dropped from the final cut of the original release because director Ridley Scott felt that the sequence interrupted the pace of the film. He believed that the inclusion of this sequence interfered with Ripley's attempt to exit the ship, which would have unnecessarily slowed down the picture. The cutting of the cocoon sequence was an attempt by the director to keep tension in the final minutes of the film, not an attempt to alter the intended life cycle. However, Ridley Scott said that the Theatrical Cut is his "Director's cut" and any alternate versions are just special editions for fans. Therefore his intention was to leave this scene out. That scene is now available in the Director's cut.

Ridley Scott will be much more loyal to his deleted scenes than to cameron work .
To be honest i find this more cool that the "human/hybrid" that was already explored in Alien 4 . Also you remember that in the comic con footage there is a scene with someone burning something on the ground ( or not so tall ) with a flamethrower

The alternate signal is only on the Director's Cut of the Bluray, that's why you didn't find any difference. The Bluray has two versions, choose Director's Cut and skip to that scene, it is different. The new "signal" is hopeless compared to the original imho.

From what Rhunter describes, Ridley Scott's announcement, and other considerations (notably, Erich von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods"), we can assume that this is a film about ancient astronauts and their encounter with the Weylan Corporation explorers before merging with Yutani Industries in order to acquire a Xenomorph specimen. Based off of the urns with "goo" , the heiroglyphs, underground chambers, and the mutation in the Comic-Con footage-it seems that the Space Jockey race are revered as Holy Engineers and Gods- that helped advance the human race to greater levels, but with a more darker and mysterious twist.
Here's how I put it:
Millions and Millions of years ago, a most superb, intelligent, creative, and domineering race swept the galaxy. Explorers. Engineers. Gods. Having the potential to blossom space with the beauty of life, they set about to reap the benefits of their creations. But from great deeds came great consequence...their own creations, their "children" became uncontrollable, uncontained. It wasn't long before they became threatened themselves...and vanished into the hourglass of time...but not forever

ReplyarrgyPrometheus Forum"Why don't you just freeze him!"Oct 23, 2011
Also, the special order required Ash to make sure the Alien return to Earth and the crew was expendable. Remember, Dallas makes the statement to Ripley that Ash has the final say on all things science because that is the way the company wants it. If Ash says no go on freezing him, then its a no go. Also, consider that the crew does not know that the face hugger is a one time thing. The face hugger could jump to another crew member. If the hugger had the strength to break through the visor of Kane's suit what is to stop it from breaking through the protective container of a stasis pod? Also Special Order 937 required ASH to make sure the Alien come back and the crew was expendable, Ash may not know at the time but freezing the creature or putting into stasis may in some way hurt the creature and go counter to his orders.
The MOST interesting thing between the original novilization and script and the movie was that there was an element of oxygen supply that did not make it into the movie. For some reason the crew in the original script had only a certain amount of oxygen on board, this was totally taken out of the movie, and in one of the scripts I read the crew discussed the possibility of having to go into stasis because of a lack of air!

I doubt it. I believe that the Alien cocoons humans for one of two purposes. 1. To feed off of later. 2. To hold in place, for an eventual facehugger to attach itself. I don't believe that there was any transference of DNA.
ReplyarrgyPrometheus ForumAlien Directors cut: The Alien Transmission AKA:SOS/Warning signalOct 23, 2011
They do sound slightly different. But then again I never believed there even WAS a transmission.
Think about it. According to special order 937 the Nostromo was rerouted to new coordinates to investigate and pick up the new life form. So the company already knew about the Alien, they knew were it was, all they needed was an excuse any excuse to send a crew to LV-426 to get it.
Ahhh a loophole in the contract that states that transmission of an unknown alien origin must be investigated. There is your excuse.
Next, the transmission, according to Ripley, is some "type" of warning. Then that's it, never ever hear of the transmission again until Aliens and the scene where she tells the company they home in on its beacon. Notice in that scene no one acknowledges what she says and they are all kinda stunned about it.
My theory, the company planted some fake signal into Mother. Mother reroutes the ship awakens the crew and lies to Dallas about a fake signal. Interesting, Ash never checks out the signal except to say its the same repeating pattern. The crew now is forced to get the creature. They never find the source of the transmission on the ship, and 57 years later there is no discussion about a signal in Aliens. So what happened to the signal? Did it just shut off?
No folks, there was no signal...it was all created by the company and part of the deception.
ReplyarrgyPrometheus ForumAliens - Have questionsOct 23, 2011
In one of the Alien scenes. I believe Lambert makes a reference to the crew that they have 9 more months to go back to Earth, I may be mistaken and it may be 11 months. But it is around that time frame. This was right before Kane wakes up.

Mmmmmmmim i'm thinking sucker punch as a prime example lol . (Fucking spice girls )
Well i don't have a problem with female gender roles being portrayed in an unrealistic fashion after all cinema is escapism and not a literal fact of life, especially in the sc fi fantasy genre.
The one thing I did get tired of was the over reliance of the Sigourney weaver character in the sequels to alien and aliens , i'm so glad they are having a complete change of direction on that front .
After the second film it just got ridiculous that the subsequent films were determined to include the Ripley character. For me the alien films were never grounded by the ripley character or the appeal of the films it has and will always remain the artwork and world of Giger's creation that drew me to the stories but after the second film i felt they became parody's of themselves (even though i understand David Fincher was undermined by fox to deliver the story he wanted to tell) i still think there were a multitude of directions the films could have explored that were not related in any way to Ripley's character.
I for one wanted a return to the Necronomicon original alien design where the alien resembled an ultra intelligent insectoid, bio-mechanical creature, and the world in which it inhabits so eerie and bizarre.
The look of the creatures were so integral to the appeal that I was anticipating something that truly resembled that original artwork , those huge bug eyes, and that mushroom coloured skin, the enormous head and tail, a creature that had super senses, and could possibly Camouflage it self like some sociopathic instinct driven merciless octopus.
Some may argue that the majority of the creature effects represented some of those ideas but for me the creature became more and more like an extra from Spielberg's Jurassic park.
Given the budget of the first film and the nature of the effects industry's infancy at that time the creature effects were remarkable, but James Cameron took it to another level again especially with the alien queen designs, Still i believe that the essence of the surreal and totally bizarre world of the alien creature and the alien itself are yet to be fulfilled and i'm hoping that this film in some way goes towards correcting that or at least opens the door for future franchise film makers to deliver the Xenomorph experience we were all hoping for in the first place after the initial two films.
ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumIs it, or isn't it?Oct 22, 2011
I blame the spice girls lol.... or sucker punch NOW THAT WAS CRAP.
I do have some sympathy and can relate to what neurion is saying even though i'm on the fringes of what he believes to be the case .
Another point in question is Samuel L Jackson's role in iron man totally inappropriate for the role of Nick Fury .
All in all though we're essentially debating the merits of pigment and DNA , history and Hollywood can't erase the achievements of white males or any other creed for that matter its all to well documented.
As for the Jews running Hollywood well there simply wouldn't be a Hollywood without them metro Goldwyn mare etc to numerous to mention .
Independence day was a real Jew Fest and will smith and Jeff Goldblum save the world Single-handedly but hey that's why these films are labelled fantasy lol.
No one with an ounce of common sense takes Hollywood or tv media seriously and no matter how history is distorted through these mediums you have to be pretty dense to take it on face value .
Its not new that TV dumb's down its output for mass consumption and Hollywood is no different i suggest viewing more independent films and as for T V just throw the thing away lol. Same goes for most newspapers.
Tv or heroin what's your drug of choice.

I think that prometheus being done as a film as a alien sode story will allow alien to speak on its own. Ridley is aware of how the star wars prequels we recieved as far as their over all quality and I think that is the reason why he did not want this to be a direct prequel. Its smart because this could work into its own series kinda like dr who has torchwiod. This movie will give the space jockies their own account. Ridley is a pretty dry person in his interviews and I doubt the dialog will be tasteless like the prequels. Promrtheus may end up being citizen kane of sci fi if all the rumours we have heard so far are even just somewhat true.

I'm hoping for solid "R" rating for sure.
Replyalteredstate.Prometheus ForumTo be or not to be pg 13Oct 22, 2011
Yeah gladiator was a great film I agree the certificates vary from world regions though here it was a 15 cert.
I'm British/English, So I'm not 100% sure what an R rating constitutes but for the record I thought gladiator could have been a bit more realistic or to put it another way braver in its depiction of a Gladiatorial event.
I am getting a bit long in the tooth to be impressed by gore for gores sake but in the case of gladiator i feel it could have and should have been far more graphic than it was . The reason being the very nature of the films title, yes the film had good fight sequences and a fair portion of graphic violence but it could of been a lot more sadistic, and for this film it would of highlighted the very appalling nature reflected by the films subject matter .
After all i found the gladiator scenes in the life of Brian more graphic lol so on that score i was a little disappointed but I wont deny its one of my fav films I just think Neil Marshall's centurion was a bit more braver in the gore stakes.
ReplyFrantzPrometheus ForumTo be or not to be pg 13Oct 22, 2011
There is "funny" gore like in Centurion ( good movie with a great Fassbender ) or in starship troopers ...and there is the "serious" gore like in Saving Private Ryan or Black hawk dawn ( another R for Ridley and an excellent movie )...both kind of gore if used too much can please teens but distract the rest from the movie .
I think gore is useful if used to underline a tragic situation , Alien is a perfect example ..one moment of great gore in the perfect moment .
Too much gore in the gladiator would have changed the "tone" of the movie and was very risky .

Well my thoughts - i think that star wars is a big circus for children.
I found the old AND the new episodes really boring and dumb.
Some nice pictures, but really brainless.
Also the robot jokes of R2D2 and his companion have never been funny to me - boring.
Star Wars its not science fiction, its disneyland in space!
I think prometheus will be great - not only because of the interesting story, and i think that everyone who saw Alien was deep impressed by the space jokey and the alien ship, so this could really be interesting.
Plus - i think Michael Fassbender is the most interesting actor nowadays, and i am sure he has the potential to dominate the cinema of the next 20 years. Forget about Christian Bale - boring sad man! And i am SO happy that in Prometheus you will NOT see Russel Crowe. I dont like him - boring. I never understood why Ridley Scoot likes Russel Crowe so much.

What dont work to me in Alien Resurrection are 3 things
1) is too short in the middle part , so interesting people die too fast ( the script was better )
2) the bad guy is too straight forward , the aliens must be the bad guys
3) the entire robot/ryder part dont work for me

Hey Miser42,
I think the White guy you want to point your finger at is me. I’m the one who brought up traditional male and female film roles in films…in regard to “THE THING” prequel. Then it just sort of evolved…or devolved into this. Sorry about that folks.
In my experience, the most stimulating and interesting conversations often include multiple subjects…especially subjects that tend to be taboo. So, I guess I may have stepped on a dick or two. Sorry about that. God forbid the conversation expand into different frontiers. Whew...now I realize not everybody’s ready to discuss social-political attitudes that affect and influence the arts. Funny thing is, according to Ridley Scott…the “PROMETHEUS” film is not an ALIEN film, but a “new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place.” So there you go “Miser”…This website is not really for an ALIEN movie/prequel either (as much as we’d all like it to be). You know…I actually thought of posting my original statements in a more appropriate form on this same website…if there is one, but “The Thing” prequel, and it’s trailers were being discussed on this thread. I’ll try to manage it better next time.
Just go ahead and swallow that blue pill, Ahhhhh…ignorance is bliss!

And I agree that my post was too long winded, and that the Protocols of Zion were, and are racist. However, I think it’s possible you may have that in reverse.
I have made no personal attacks on this thread, whereas as you seem to be getting very personal, didactic, and mean-hearted in regard to my views, theories, and assessing my mental stability. My post mentioned “groups” and “ideas”, your messages regarding my perspectives and mental state have been vindictive and personally disparaging. I originally sought only to use a macro vs. a microscope on the modern Science fiction/Horror film genre.
In spite of our possible differences in opinion, your writing is intelligent, and in fact you seem like a very sharp person. I mean that sincerely…not sarcastically like before. Perhaps we just got off on the wrong foot. Let’s not continue this…and try to find an area of the O’Bannon/Giger/Scott universe, that we enjoy in common. Sorry about the smart-ass sarcasm before.
