@pgr I simply downloaded the trailer in 1080p and watched it uh......several times, advancing/reversing frames, etc. Doing that carefully, you can actually make out the fin-like structure on the "horn" in the distance, as it strikes first. On the main page of this site, there's a shot of the SJ ship with a large gouge just to it's left. In the trailer, there's a shot of Shaw staring at the ship with it's "horns" upright, some distance away Though the trailer doesn't actually show it, the sequence of events I described is really the only one that makes sense in context with the visual evidence we do have.

we dont know the geopolitical alliances in that far future :) an alliance between USA and EUROPE ( maybe with russia ) can control the world economy for centuries ...but i prefer to think that everyone will live happy ,fishing and not caring about "economical power" ..everyone fishing and the Weyland getting fun making space expeditions :p

I think you should look at the names as complementary device to aid storytelling not a geopolitical commentary. David is obviously Biblical. And with all the Egyptian references in this movie, this is not too out of place. It also helps that David is an incredibly common name. What is Ridley saying we are all "Davids?" Elizabeth is derived from Eliza, sounds Hebrew to you, yes? Elizabeth means "Oath of God" Google "elizabeth etymology" Meredith is Celtic for "Guardian of Sea" or "Great Chief" That's why she is presumably the Chief Operating Officer on Prometheus. The "guardian" meaning is interesting too. Guardian of what? The Alien artifact? The knowledge? Holloway is most likely derived from the word "hollow." This character has been rumored to death as being taken over by alien virus, leaving him nothing but an empty shell of biological construct: Hollow Man. Janek is a Polish name, meaning "God is gracious." Derivative of John with the same meaning. Ravel is also a character in the movie. So you may expect this character either get physically tangled, "raveled" (with all the alien organisms expected to wreak havoc), or mentally tangled (ie. confused or gone mad, typical in the hard scifi genre).

Sorry doesnt really fit your post heading. But like the Freddy vs Jason film. Could you imagine an Alien vs Chucky film. In the end the Alien wins. Chucky is facehugged and bursting out of his chest is a four foot tall pale white alien with freckles and red hair. LOL talk about one ugly Alien. :)

The Derelict rolls over and then falls flat. A giant bull emerges from the surface and the derelict takes flight and positions itself once again in the nostril septum of the bull's nose.

If thats what you call it. Im guessing this is where the bio suit plugs into the chair to fuse the suit and the chair together. It was just rigidy looking, as if something was torn from it. That made it odd looking to me.

Ya, I would have to agree with you on that.. looks like it fits into the back of that "guy" in the scene... lol. After viewing that scene (not the first time), I noticed that he is right at the control center that is in the "Star Chart", room, I think that may have been noticed before tough. Not only that, but the floor is moving back as well..

Where do you see the floor moving back? The scene happens too quickly for me to see the floor moving. I can see what you say about that piece maybe fitting into the back of his suit right between where his shoulder blades would be.

It's the same scene with the "head rest"... lol. I always thought that the camera was just moving in a circlular direction.. but its the floor that is moving as well.

I've been finalising the ending which will follow this installment. Yes just one more installment to go and then I'll be more than happy to hear your views good or bad, your questions and any discussions from that. The Raven descends down through the turbulent clouds of the unnamed planet. Ripley 8 holding the control stick firm in her right hand, and flicking various switches above her head turns slightly towards Vriess and Johner, “Better buckle up, this is gonna be rough!” As the Raven rocks and jolts in the turbulent winds of the atmosphere Ripley 8 turns her attention to a screen showing the contours of the ground below. Marked on the screen is a red triangle with the designation ‘FO-12’. Ripley 8 taps the red triangle causing a marker and counter to appear on the cockpit window. Ripley 8 shifts the control stick slightly, levelling out just meters above the ground and orientating the Raven towards the marker. Johner, aware that Ripley 8 is flying to an outpost, most likely guarded, he turns to her confused, “What’s the plan?” Ripley 8 produces the old computer panel from her pocket and places it on the cockpits panel, Vriess recognising it enquires, “That’s centuries old! What do you need it for?” “I need to borrow their equipment.” Ripley 8 simply states before turning to Johner, “I’m gonna need you to keep them busy,” she turns to Vriess, “and I’m gonna need you to fly stick!” Vriess’ eyes widen, but Ripley 8 reassures him, “I’ve locked the altitude and redirected the horizontal controls to the stick.” Noticing Vriess’ eyes widen more, “Just waggle the stick you’ll be fine.” The Raven, maintaining level above the ground, raises as the ground comes to small incline before dropping with the ground. In front of the Raven is an observation station, complete with an orbital transmitter, guarded by four synthetic soldiers. Behind them, stretching towards the horizon, dozens of large organic egg-shaped structures, the Alien hives. The faint silhouettes of Aliens perched, scurrying and patrolling between and on top of the hives. The synthetic soldiers raise their weapons as the Raven approaches, turning towards them as it slows to stop above the ground, dust and debris blowing up from the backwash of the Ravens engines. The cargo bay door opens, dropping down to become a ramp. Johner, relishing the moment stands proud and heroic before running off the ramp and firing his assault rifle at one of the synthetic soldiers, their head exploding in a mist of milk. Landing on the ground Johner throws down his assault rifle as the three remaining synthetic soldiers run towards him. Cracking his neck, “Come on fella’s.” The first synthetic soldier punches Johner square in the stomach while dodging Johners punch. Folding forward Johner head butts the first synthetic soldier as it rises from its crouched position. The second synthetic soldier steps behind Johner ready to grab him, but Johner stands upright, snapping his head back, head butting his would be grabber. As the first and second synthetic soldiers briefly recover from their blows, and as the third charges at Johner Ripley 8 jumps from the cargo bay ramp and runs behind the orbital transmitter, unseen. Punching through the metallic housing of the transmitter Ripley 8 is able to rip off the security panel, revealing a myriad of cables, a monitor and a keyboard. Ripley 8 slides out the keyboard and furiously taps on the keys as Johner uppercuts one of the synthetic soldiers, knocking it off its feet and then flat on its back. The relay dish atop the orbital transmitter moves from looking due south to looking straight up. Ripley 8 taps away again at the keyboard. Johner, grabbed by two of the synthetic soldiers either side of him head butts the third, knocking it back. Ripley 8 pulls two cables from inside the transmitter before pulling the old computer panel from her pocket. She then connects the cables to the panel and enters a brief code onto the keyboard. The monitor displays the word ‘TRANSMITTING’. Ripley 8 looks around the transmitter to see Johner spearhead two of the synthetic guards, knocking them onto their backs. Returning her attention to the transmitter, she places the old computer panel underneath the housing, out of sight before ripping out the keyboard. Ripley 8 appears from behind the orbital transmitter, long coat wavering in the wind, her hood raised, casually walking towards the synthetic soldiers as they turn to notice her. Johner taking his cue grabs his assault rifle and jumps back on board the Raven. One of the synthetic soldiers charges Ripley 8. She sidesteps the charge and thrusts out her arm, clothes-lining her attacker who doubles over in the air before landing face down on the ground. The second synthetic soldier cautiously approaches Ripley 8 before swinging a punch at her. She weaves out of the way of the attack before rising back up, grabbing her second attacker by the shoulder and kicking the back of its knees, sending them to the ground. The third synthetic soldier, having observed Ripley 8’s fighting ability adapts and turns towards her, performing a spinning back kick. Unflinching Ripley 8 grabs the extended leg of her attacker and, having noticed the first synthetic soldier is now standing, swings her attacker with his leg, sending him flying into the first. Johner, watching from the ramp, cheers for Ripley, obviously impressed by her fighting prowess. Still out of breath from his own fight with the synthetic soldiers Johner crouches down to catch his breathe and rest his muscles. Touching the floor Johner’s hands feel wet. Looking down he sees threads of mucus and slime as he raises his hand. Behind him, beyond his peripheral vision a familiar dark, skeletal tail waves in the wake of movement.

I think me and rick are the ones closest to this. @ Rbrown - What you mention there is the books/graphic novels/comics/games which is called EU (extended universe). EU is not canon, canon is the films and the films only because that is where the franchise started. For example dark horse did a bunch of stories about Hicks and Newt set after Aliens, but when Alien 3 killed the characters off the characters in the comic where changed. Don't get me wrong the comics have some good ideas, but most of the time their ideas are way too farfetched (ie Predator-Human-Alien hybrid). @ rick - I kinda like the Alien 2.5 story except for one logistical problem - if the company entered the derelict during Aliens and took some eggs, why bother with infecting the Sulaco, why not just take them home for observation. @deadcell - Yep Alien Rez screws that idea up, as does AVP.

I always thought that Ash and the Blade Runner androids were actually the same model: NEXUS, but just a whole century apart - yunno, like Ford model T and Ford Focus. Of course, I've just made this connection up for myself. But wouldn't it have been quaint if both films shared the same future? I wonder if Sir Ridley intended that also...

ok for all intents and purposes, the alien androids and blade runner replicants were the same beast. but here's the catch, is an android a bio mechanical being like the xenomorph, and if so, would that have aided ashes mentality toward helping it. seeing it as a semi kindred spirit. god i love thinking about stuff like this

To answer your question. The androids are not biological. They are strictly mechanical meant to look organic and that is about the extent of it. I do love the use of fiberoptics in Ash used for data transfer or signals in the movie to and from his brain. This was merely hypothetical use of data transfer until the eary-mid 80's with the advent of second generation fiber that was able to carry any real bandwidth across it. The xeno's are strictly organic meant to look mechanical. The difference falls on the ability of organic to have clean crisp mechanical 100% symetrical lines or corners is impossible. Example: the octopus. The octopus tries hard really hard to imitate sold hard lines but can't. It comes close but is unable to. Incase most of you didn't know. Octopus can change color. This is the only example that I can think of in nature at the moment.

yes but would you not consider an android biological because it has its own intellegence. to him an alien would be the only thing it could sympathise with.

I think Ash knew pretty much what to expect, he was a company android remember what Dallas told Rilpley , "I went five hauls, long and short, various cargoes, with anothother science officer. Then two days days before we left Thedus, they replaced him with Ash". The warning Beacon was explained thus by Ash "...And that the company experts knew all along the transmission was a warning and not a distress signal". He also went on to explain "...according to what the (company) translators determined, it was much to late for a distress signal to do the senders any good. The signal itself was frighteningly specific, very detailed". Ash also told Ripley, "...they (SJ) set up the warning, to keep the inhabitants of other ships that might consider setting down on that world from suffering the same fate." He also said "... they (SJ) were a noble race...". It is likely the comapny detected the signal whilst surveying the systems and decided to take the firest possible opportunity to make use of the Alien and associated technology which they were aware of due to the signals speciivity.

Good. Thanks a lot for your statements so far. I don´t talk of that film as too badly arranged program either, otherwise I wouldn´t have spearheaded- In comparison with other sci-fi movies of the late ninetees and early 2000s (esp. U.S. productions) it was quite novel; It wasn´t a whole new idea of a plot indeed, but especially the involvement the newly emerging compter graphics were surely rubbing off on many others of those productions. I hold that it´s not hard to imagine Mission 2 Mars as a 3D movie; today it´d be certainly shot in §D. By your leave, I lead over to the next question which I´ve, ex ante, raised: Mind those (badly drawn) storyboard printouts of a man standing in the middle of a congress hall with thousands of auditors... As for weyland corp. is a multi divisional firm, I deem this concept/idea of a going to public as rather unrealistic one. Even if it was formerly said that there were some new deals (relating to Weyland Corp.) to bring out within the scope of that enterprise of èxploring the origins of humanity´, it´s probable that they start it as clandestine, without implying public so much. My opinion.

Mission to Mars was kinda-sorta interesting up until they revealed the alien, whose design looked like it was intended - solely - for little kids. If you're going to use gray, I prefer the unnerving, dead-eyed, grey-skinned entity cooked up by popular culture. At any rate, I'm commenting for something more superficial (sorry to be this guy):
Yeah Mission to Mars does make an effort to demonstrate a plausible implementation of artificial gravity, but 2001: A Space Odyssey already did that more than 50 years ago.
C'mon, man, it's an old movie, but it's not THAT old. Try 44 years. ;)

I actually prefer the brightness and crystal clarity of a good 2D image over the relative dimness and slight blurriness of current 3D. IMO, too much of 3D in its' present iteration looks like multiple flat 2D planes overlaying each other to provide an illusion of 3D, rather than true volumetric images with natural parallax.

The 3D Prometheus is using has been used by one other film only...Avatar. The 3d in Avatar was top notch and surprisingly easy to watch....which cannot be said for the movie itself....which wasn't. Again, the 3D was light years ahead of anything used on the stupid Resident Evil film, The horrible Alice in Wonderland crap or the amazing (not the 3d part) Piranha 3D This movie is filmed in this format so it will not fall into your "multiple flat 2D planes overlaying each other to provide an illusion of 3D, rather than true volumetric images with natural parallax." category.

Just for the sake of argument.....if the SJ's technology is biomechanically based, why would they have to look exactly like what we saw in "Alien".... all of the time? If they've incorporated biomechanical technology within themselves, ( which would make perfect sense, given that they're presumably highly advanced ) they might very well look somewhat different, depending on what they're doing.......If one were to interface biomechanically with the ship, we might expect them to look somewhat different when that occurs, as opposed to when they're simply moving around. In the context of a biomechanical technology, wouldn't it make sense for form to follow function?
